DINING ARRANGEMENTS ON THE MIDLAND SCOTCH EXPRKSS . —The arrangement , which was inaugurated by the Midland Company at the commencement of the tourist season last year , for serving luncheons , dinners , and other refreshments , en route , to first and third class passengers travelling by their afternoon Scotch express trains has thoroughly justified itself by results , and they
contemplate extending this arrangement to the Morntnif express trains also , between London and Glasgow , commencing on July 2 nd . The trains on which the new dining carriages will run will be those leaving London ( St . Pancras ) at 10 . 30 a . m . and 2 . 10 p . m ., and Glasgow ( St . Enoch ) at 10 a . m . and 1 . 30 p . m ., and amongst the points served by them will be Liverpccl , Manchester , Bradford , Leeds , Sheffield , Derby , Nottingham , Leicester , Birmingham , and Bristol .
The LONDON AND NORTII-WKSTF . We regret to record the death of Bro . Horace Frederick Stewart , which took place , after only three days' illness , on the 4 th inst . Bro . Stewart was a P . M . of the Thames Valley Lodge , No . 1460 , and P P . S . G . W . of the Province of Middlesex . He was also a P . M . of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers' Company . The funeral took place at Hendon on Saturday , the gth inst .

Another new lodge , to be called the " City , " will be consecrated at an early date , the necessary warrant , signed by the Most Worshipful Grand Master , the Prince of Wales , having already been granted . The remains of the late Hon . Alexander Temple Fitzmaurice , fourth son of the fifth Earl of Orkney , will be interred to-morrow ( Saturday ) in the village churchyard of Taplow . The deceased , who was 60 years of age , served for some years with the 72 nd Foot—now the Seaforth Highlanders—and was present at the battles of the Alma

Membership will be open to Lancashire mc n in London , or gentlemen connected with the County Palatine by residence or association . In all probability the name of the lodge will be the Red Rose of Lancashire , and the meetings wil ! be held at the Frascati , in Oxford-street .

We regret to record the death of Bro . Horace Frederick Stewart , which took place , after only three days' illness , on the 4 th inst . Bro . Stewart was a P . M . of the Thames Valley Lodge , No . 1460 , and P P . S . G . W . of the Province of Middlesex . He was also a P . M . of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers' Company . The funeral took place at Hendon on Saturday , the gth inst .
Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair , G . Chaplain , distributed the prizes on Saturday at the close of the Scottish Gathering that was held at Stamford Bridge . There being a record attendance , the funds of the Royal Caledonian Asylum and the Scottish . Corporation will benefit handsomely by the afternoon ' s sport .
Freemasonry in Liverpool is progressing—a remark which applies especially to its Charities . Another new lodge , to be called the " City , " will be consecrated at an early date , the necessary warrant , signed by the Most Worshipful Grand Master , the Prince of Wales , having already been granted . Its headquarters will probably be at a well-known hotel in Dale-street .
At Ashland , Wisconsin , a few days ago , Priest Fabian , in a sermon said : " You should all of you men join the Catholic Knights , and be instructed for the fray , and be in the front , shoulder to shoulder . We must protect our rights in this country as well as our church , our church is the only true church in the world . We must defend it and uphold it at all hazards . The annual visit to London of the officers and men of the Royal Marine Artillery , 800 strong , stationed at Plymouth , takes place to-day ( Friday ) . The regiment with its banc ! will visit the Earl ' s Court Exhibition , and during the afternoon and evening take part in the sports which are given
there daily . After witnessing the performance at the Water Show and enjoying a shoot on the chute , they will proceed to the grounds of the military tournament , participate in the musical ride , and then attempt to overthrow their opponents in a tug of war .
The remains of the late Hon . Alexander Temple Fitzmaurice , fourth son of the fifth Earl of Orkney , will be interred to-morrow ( Saturday ) in the village churchyard of Taplow . The deceased , who was 60 years of age , served for some years with the 72 nd Foot—now the Seaforth Highlanders—and was present at the battles of the Alma
and Balaclava , and also participated in the Indian Mutiny conflicts . In 1 S 6 7 he was appointed Groom of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales , and in 1 S 73 married Adela , daughter of Mr . Simon Scrope , of Danby Hall , and widow of Mr . E . Riddell , of Tne Grange , Northumberland .
As St . John the Baptist ' s Day falls this year on Sunday next , the members and honorary associates of the Order of the Grand Priory of the Order of the Hospital of St . John of Jerusalem ot England will commemorate their annual festival on the following day , Monday , the 25 th inst . There will be a special service in the Chapel Royal , Savoy , which has been placed , for the occasion , at the disposal of the
Order by her Majesty the Oueen , the sovereign head and patron of the Order , of whicn his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is the Grand Prior , and his Koyal Highness the Duke of York Sub-Prior , l'he members and associates will lunch together at the First Avenue Hotel , and in the afternoon the annual general assembly will be held , by permission of the Master and Benchers , in the Hall of Gray ' s Inn .
Mallet in the Glasgow Evening News writes : " I had a glance at an old minute book of Lodge St . Mark , No . 102 , the other day , from which I find that in the ' 50 ' s at almost every meeting of the lodge a lecture was given or a paper read . It may not be known by our younger members that Bro . Sheridan Knowles was a P . M . of St . Mark . In this connection 1 make the following extract from the minute
of the annual festival , held on May 12 th , 1853 . •The dinner , which was personally superintended by Bro . Charles Wilson , Senior Steward , reflected great credit on his provisional powers . ... The quality of the liquors also cannot be passed over in silence—they were good . During the evening the brethren enjoyed the rare privilege of
listening to the eloquence of Bro . Sheridan Knowles , a person known throughout the world as the greatest living dramatist , and who , as he himself mentioned , was at one time R . W . M . of St . Mark ' s Lodge , and the heartfelt and feeling manner in which this worthy man and brother spoke of the kindnesses he had on more than one occasion receiver ! from brethren who do honour to this city , and their kind , was truly edifying . ' "

The Channel Squadron , in command of Admiral Fitzroy , arrived in the Clyde on Thursday evening from Stornoway . A writer in the " Masonic Visitor " asks "will some kind reader , gentle or otherwise , invent a brand-new speech to be used by unhappy men in returning thanks when their health is proposed . A valuable prize will , I have no doubt , be given for the simp if up to the required strength by the editi r of this journal . "
It is proposed to form a new lodge in Lond in for Lanca shire men . Membership will be open to Lancashire mc n in London , or gentlemen connected with the County Palatine by residence or association . It is booed the Pro Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Lathom , will accept the office of Worshipful Master . In all probability the name of the lodge will be the Red Rose of Lancashire , and the meetings wil ! be held at the Frascati , in Oxford-street .
Mr . H . H . Johnston , her Majesty ' s Commissioner and Consul-G-. neral for British Central Africa , attended the monthly meeting of the Zoological Society of Lindon , held a . t Hanover-square , under the presidency of Sir William Flower , in order to receive the silver medal awarded him b y the Council " as some recognition of the value of his
services to zoological science in making known the fauna of the region of the African continent , which was under his administration . " The Duchess of Marlborough , Lord Falmouth , Major-General the Hon . Henry Parnell , the Hon . Alice F . Alalcolm , Captain the Hm . Gilbert Leigh , and others were elected Fellows of the Society .
A circular just issued by the Secretary of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , Bro . Speth , contains the following " : "On Wednesday , 28 th November next , the warrant of Lod ge QuatuorCoronatiwillbeioyearsold . It has been thought that tne occasion might be commemorated by holding a conversazione in the new hall , which will by that time be attached to the Holborn Restaurant . The proceedings w . ll comprise an address of welcome from the W . M ., an oration on
Freemasonry , specially addressed to the ladies , by Dr . Sir Benj . Ward Richardson , and music at intervals , the words given being by Masonic composers only . Possibly Moz irt ' s Cantata would be one of the numbers rendered . A few interesting objects of art connected with the Craft would probably be displayed , and light refreshment would be provided throughout the evening . A dispensation for the
brethren to wear Craft clothing would be applied for . In this case also it is impossible to take any further steps until I know what support the project is likely to receive , as unless some 200 brethren and ladies are likely to attend , no satisfactory arrangements can be made . The ticket , including refreshment , will probably cost about five shillings or less per head . "
Otvin ^ the steady development the City London College , the governing body have found it necessary to add another block to their already large building . There is accommodation at the present time for 4000 students , and the new building will , when fully occupied , bring the total capacity up to 6000 . By the opening night of the session , on the ist October next , a new suit of art studios will be ready tor Professor Hawker ; a biological and physical
laboratory for Professor Scarf ; and two large lecture rooms for general use , all fitted with electric light . The new block , having separate entrances on the ground level , will be connected with the present building uy a covered bridge from the main corridor . The engineering department , which has been under the direction of Professor Henry Adams for the last quarter of a century , will occupy the vacated art room .

Ai was befitting the occasion , the tables were laden with the choicest fruits of the hothouseand m ide brilliant with the prettiest floral treasures .
, including magnificent roses and rare orchids in rich abundance . The Chairman , in giving " Success to the Gardeiners' Royal Benevolent Institution , " said it was still in a nourishing condition . A good gardener loved his vocation for its own sake , and did much to increase the happiness of mankind . The institution provided pensions
for 157 aged and infirm men and women who had been connected with the industry . Mr . H . J . Heith responded , and among other speakers were Mr . N . L . Cohen and Mr . W . J . Nutting . Subscriptions to the amount of £ i 245 were announced , including 100 guineas from the chairman and a like sum from Messrs . Rothschild .
