Rawle , said he svas very pleased to hear the applause which went round the chapter svhen he proposed they should ask Comp . Rawle to accept a Past Principal ' s jewel .
Royal Arch.
The companions svould all agree that there svas no mem ber of the chapter svho more deserved a jesvel , as Comp Rawle had faithfully and steadily endeavoured to promote the interests of the chapter in every shape and svay . He svas deservedly surrounded by friends because he svas an excellent worker . Comp . Rasvle , in reply , said that svas the last time he svould have the opportunity of returning thanks for that toastbut he could assure the companions that it had been
, a pleasure as svell as a duty to do his level best to follosv in the footsteps of Comp . Shurmur , svho occupied such a pedestal of excellency in the chapter . It must be the ambition of all the companions not to excel him in any way , but to follow humbly in his footsteps . For himself he could say that no one could feel a greater interest than he in the success of that chapter . It svas a great thing for
a companion to rise in a chapter attached to his mother lodge , and he svas very proud to be elected its First Principal 12 months ago . He had to thank the proposer of the toast for the kind remarks he made svhen he asked the companions to vote him a P . Z . ' s jewel . He was afraid svhat little he had had to do had not been done as svell as he
svould have liked , and he had to thank the companions for their kind indulgence , svhich would never be blotted out of his memory . Comp . Rasvle proposed "The H . and J ., " and said that as long as the companions elected to the first chair such a companion as Comp . Cutchey , the Guelph Chapter must have success .
Comp . Cutchey thanked the members of the chapter for the honour they had that evening conferred upon him . They had put upon him a fearful responsibility , but he would do his best to discharge it properly . Comp . George Graveley said he loved Masonry , as every companion present knesv , and he was _ always ready to help in the svork . He svould have been just as pleased if the
M . E . Z ., instead of asking him to perform the duties ot the second chair , had asked him to be Janitor that evening . What he had done in the past was merely what he svould do in the Suture . H he could advance the chapter in any particular he svould do it . He liked excellence in working , and he wanted respectability in the members . Quality svas before quantity , and if the companions would bear in mind
that svhen they had members elected to the Guelph Chapter , svhich took its name from the Royal Family , they ought to be particular in their choice . He could assure the M . E . Z . elect that if ever he svanted any assistance in the working , he ( Comp . Graveley ) svould alsvays be prepared to give it with pleasure . Comp . Rasvle proposed "The Past Principals of the Chapter , " all of svhom took a deep interest in the chapter .
Comp . Shurmur had taken great interest in it from its formation , and so had Comp . Graveley . Whatever Comp . Shurmur put his hand to became a success . When he put his hand to the plough he did not look back . He occupied a high position not only in that chapter , but in the Masonic svorld . He svas a candidate for the office of Grand Treasurer , one of the highest positions that Masonry could offer ,
and the office svas elective . At onetime the same Treasurer svas elected year after year , but now a different brother svas elected every year . Both he and Comp . Shurmur svere agreeably surprised at the enormous support he svas promised . He called upon as many brethren as possible to attend Grand Lodge next March and vote for Comp . Shurmur . It svould be an honour conferred upon the
Guelph Chapter if he svere elected . Comp . W . Shurmur , in acknosvledging thc toast , said they had heard that " out of the fulness of the heart thc mouth speaketh , " but he was afraid his heart svas too full for him to . speak . He could not express his deep sense of gratitude to Comp . Rasvle for the very cordial svay in svhich he had mentioned his name in connection svith that toast .
He alsvays felt it a great privilege and pleasure to be of service to that chapter . It svas undoubtedly a very high compliment to select a companion to preside as the First Principal of a new chapter . If he had succeeded in giving satisfaction to thc companions it svas a source of real gratification to him . Comp . Rasvle had referred in very comp limentary terms to his ( Comp . Shurmur ' s ) candidature for
the | greatest honour the Craft could confer upon any commoner —the office of Grand Treasurer . There svere only two elective offices in Grand Lodge—the Grand Master and the Grand Treasurer—and if it should be the brethren ' s pleasure to elect him to the latter office , he should hardly know hosv to estimate the honour conferred ; but this he could assure them—that he should steadfastly and conscientiously
endeavour to prove himself svorth y of their suffrages . He thanked the companions for their promised support . It was not policy to be confident , but his Committee told linn there svas only one in it , and that svas himself . That remained to be seen , but he felt sure that the brethren svould support him as promised to the utmost of their power . Comp . George Graveley asked the brethren to attend
Grand Lodge and elect him to a lower place than the Grand Treasurership—that grand board , the Board of Benevolence , where Masonry abounded ; he svished no greater honour than that—to assist the widosvs and brethren who sverc in distress . He thanked them in anticipation , and he hoped they svould remember their old friend , George Graveley , next month , and place , him again on the Board of Benevolence .
Comps . Isaacs , Medealf , and Butcher replied to the toast of "The Exaltees , " and Comps . Bunker , Eaton , Haysom , and Massey to that of " The Visitors . " The other toasts svere then given , honoured , and responded to , and the Janitor ' s toast closed the proceedings .
BOLTON . Chapter of Concord ( No . 37 ) . —A meeting svas held in Freemasons' Hall , on Monday , the 20 th inst . The chapter was opened by Comp . J . Booth , P . P . A . G . b ., M . E . Z ., there being present Comps . Wm . Forrest , P- ' - > P . G . P . S ., as H . j John Hardcastle , P . Z ., as J . ; J . Nay ler . P . Z .. S . E . ; Thos . Barnes , S . N . ; J . Newton , P . Z ., V . l G . S . N , : and others .
The M . E . Z ., Comp , Booth , in eulogistic terms , on belial ' of the members , presented a handsome P . Z . ' s jesvel ( SUP * plcmcnted also by the emblem of S . E . ) to Comp . J . Ncvvtun on his retirement from the ofiice of S . E ., after 21 y eiri faithful service . . Comp . Newton , in appropriate terms , acknowledged '" presentation , and the chapter was then closed . The jewel , svhich bore a suitable inscription , svas speci »''/ manufactured by Comp . George Kenning .

J . Booth , P . P . A . G . b ., M . E .
