Annual Festival Of The Woking Emulation Lodge Of Improvement.
In the course of the proceedings , the remark was let fall that , while Woking was generally known to the outside world in connection with sundry institutions and public establishments , which are really not in the place at all , and , indeed , at some little distance from it—for example , the cemetery , the county lunatic asylum , the crematorium , and the prison , which are divided between Brookwood , St . John's , and Knap-hill—its rapidly increasing importance as a centre of Masonic activity is as yet very imperfectly realised , except , of course , in the Province of Surrey itself .
The number of associations at Woking , all more or less Masonic , either in name or character , is believed to be greatly in excess of that at any other place in England of the same size . There are three Craft and two Mark lodges , two Royal Arch chapters , a preceptory of Knights Templar , and last , but by no means least , the" Woking Emulation Lodge of Improvement , " which is not only a nursery to the ceremonial duties of the lodge , but also a school of elocution of the very highest utility .

DEVON MASONIC EDUCATIONAL FUND .
A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Devon Masonic Educational Fund was held on the afternoon of the 21 st instant , at Freemasons Hall , Plymouth , when there were present Bros . W . Powell , who presided ; J . B Cover , Sec ; J . R . Lord , Treas . ; S . Jew , W . Allsford , R . Hambly , W . Cocks , C . Mutten , G . Whittley , W . J . Stanbury , J . W . Cornish , S . J . Page , C . Watson , and J . Griffin .
The Hon . Treasurer , Bro . J . R . LORD , reported that the total value of the Fund at the end of 1 S 94 was ^ 1484 13 s . 61 , as compared with ^ 1317 13 s . 4 d . in the previous year—an increase of . £ 167 . This increase , he said , had taken place , notwithstanding that they were now maintaining 23 children—the highest number they had ever had on the Fund . The increase was largely due to the concert given in Plymouth Guildhall last November , which resulted in an addition to the funds of exactly £ 100 .
Bro . COVER ( Hon . Sec . } reported that three candidates who failed to secure election in October last were still eligible , and that five new applications had been received for the election next month , making eight in all . Four of the new cases were placed upon the list ; the fifth was rejected on the ground that it was not a case calling for assistance from the Fund . The accepted cases were nominated by lodges at Princetown , Topsham , Ivybridge , and St . Aubyn ' s Lodge , Devonport . Tuesday , 2 nd prox ., was fixed for the annual meeting and election , to be held at
Plymouth , and it was decided to elect four new candidates on that day out ot the eight applicants . Bro . ALLSFORD called attention to the fact that the return made for the year 1893 showed that 18 lodges in the Three Towns and district contributed ^ , " 285 iqs . 6 d . to the Fund , that 17 lodges in other parts of the province contributed £ 117 14 s ., and that there were 17 lodges which did not subscribe a single penny . In the discussion which followed it was stated that repeated appeals had been
made to the non-contributing lodges to help the Fund , but without any satisfactory result . It was not until lodges found themselves in a position to require help from the Fund that they recognised their obligations to contribute to it . A strong feeling was expressed that the Committee should have a discretionary power to reject nominations from non-contributing lodges , and a notice of motion to that effect to be proposed at the next meeting in April , was given .

The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last meeting having oeen read , the VV . M . passed Bro . Linfoot . A sum was voted from the benevolent fund to an indigent brother , late a member of the lodge , and other business followed . The lodge was closed and the brethren withdrew to an excellent banquet , which was supplied by Bro . A . Clemow in his best style . Just at the close of the banquet , Bro . W . M . Stiles—who had been attending a chapter meeting at the same hotel—was announced , and he was received with great
enthusiasm , the brethren rising and giving him a hearty welcome , in consequence of it being the lirst Craft gathering he had attended since he was elected Grand Treasurer the day previous . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been honoured , Bro . A . E . Todd , I . P . M ., proposed " The Health of the W . M . " He said that his splendid work that evening was evidence that the lodge could not have a better Master , and that when the term of his office expired he would without doubt have had a very successful reign , and they were proud of him .
Bro . Brendel , VV . M ., who had a hearty reception , in a short but telling speech , observed that he would endeavour to do his best in the future as in the past . The VV . M . submitted the toast of " Bro . VV . M . Stiles , the Grand Treasurer elect . " He stated that they well knew the hard fight he had had , and it was more to his honour that he had gained the victory . The Egyptians were proud that their lodge was the first in the Craft to welcome him as the Grand Treasurer elect , and they gave him every congratulation . It went without saying that none had worked harder for Freemasjnry and
the Charities , and the right man had been elected . Bro . VV . M . Stiles , on rising to respond , had quite an ovation . In thanking the W . M .. for his kind remarks , and the brethren for the reception they had given him , he said that he noticed many of their members , a Urge proportion ol whom were old Iriends of his . at the election of Grand Treasurer . He had stated in their lodge on several
occasions that when elected his earliest duty would be to attend to offer his sincere thanks for the efforts they had made on his behalf , and he was glad to have that opportunity of carrying out his pledge . The lod ^ e had voted for him , the selected of the Craft , and it wis the greatest honour one could aspire tc , and , although he had attained that high position , he could assure them that he would always be , as they knew him of old , the same W . M . Stiles .
In giving " Tr . e Visitors , " the W . M . read out their names , and he joined with the toast the names of Bros . Mulvey , Sillis , and Dunstan . Bro . Mulvey responded , remarking that it was his second visit , and he had enjoyed himself very much . As a Preceptor of many years' standing , he felt sure that all present appreciated the excellent working of the ritual by their VV . M ., who was well supported by his officers , making special mention of the veteran Bro . J acobs , P . M ., who bad filled the office of Steward for a great number of years . Bro . Sillis said that , as a new W . M ., he appreciated their kind treatment , and he
was glad to meet their honoured guest , Bro . Stiles . Bro . Dunstan also replied , bearing testimony to the excellent working of the W . M . and the hospitality of the members . Bros . Shepperd , Dodd , and Lamigeon also responded in some good speeches . ) The W . M . gave "The Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary . " It was needless for him to say that their noble body of Past Masters were only too pleased to do anything for the lodge and the members , and that the Treasurer and Secretary carried out their duties with perfection . Bro . M . H . Hale , P . M ., Sec , responded in happy terms , observing that he was glad to see such a goodly gathering .
Bro . D . II . J acobs , P . M ., said that he was asked to respond for the whole of the Past Masters , but he was not so strong as he was 50 years ago . The W . M . was a good fellow . He had watched him ever since he was initiated in the lodge , and he had always been an active and energetic member , and when his time came to be put on the Past Masters' shelf , he hoped he would be as happy as the other occupants . He had had to
respond to the toast for 40 years , but he thought the time had arrived for him to take a back seat . He referred to the presence of Bro . Stiles , and said that he had paid them a high honour in attending immediately after his election , and he felt sure that it would make no difference in his manner , as he would not depart from his manhood or forget his old friends , although he was the Grand Treasurer elect of English Freemasons .
The W . M . proposed " The Officers . " He was pleased with their working , and the members appreciated their great worth . He tendered his thanks to the acting J . W ., Bro . R . Douglas-Smith , P . M ., who had filled that position on more than one occasion . Bro . H . J . Alacfarlane , S . W ., in response , assured the W . M . of the loyalty of all the officers , who would assist in every way . Bro . R . Douglas-Smith also replied , observing that he knew the real J . W . was there in spirit . Bro . Pallott , S . I ) ., having responded in a genial speech ,
Bro . Kemp , I . G ., said that 12 months ago he was initiated in the lodge , and he was proud to be an officer . The happy evening was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toast . Some excellent songs were well rendered by Bros . H . J . Macfarlane , R . Doug las-Smith , Dunstan , and Kemp .
New ConCOfd Lodge ( No . 813 ) . —The prosperous condition of this lodge , and the extensive popularity of its newlv-installed VV . M ., were amply evinced at the meeting which took place at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street , E . C ., on the 21 st inst ., when Bro . Herbert Sprake , W . M ., received the hearty congratulations of members and visitors numbering 120 . Ihe Secretary , Bro . A . J . Potter , P .
Bro . Bro . M . H .
