a meetings , owing to the unavoidable absence of the AV . M ., who ivas suffering from severe indisposition , ancl who HOAV retired , the chair being taken by Bro . Pettifor . The Lodge having been opened in the second degree , and Bro . AV . Jackson having passed a satisfactory examination therein , a M . M . Lodge ivas opened , ancl he AVUS raised to that sublime degree . Tho Lodge having been closed CIOAVU to the first degree , the chair ivas taken by Bro . AVindram , P . M ., who proceeded to initiate Itr . Leonard Alfred Clarke , who had been balloted for and elected at
the last meeting . A gentleman residing at Stamford was proposed for initiation . He ivas to have been balloted for and initiated as a case of emergency , but was unable to attend owing to tho loss of his brother in the calamitous ivreck of the Royal Charter . Tho D . Prov . G . M . directed the attention of tho Lodgo to a circular from the Board of General Purposes , respecting a spurious Lodge at Stratford , iu Essex , Avhich he had that day received through the Piw . Grand Master . The Lodge having heen closedthe brethren adjourned to after whichthe
, supper ; , principal loyal and Masonic toasts having been duly honoured , the brethren constituted themselves into a committee of the two Lodges , agreeably to notice , to consider the expediency of one or more Masonic balls taking place in the hall during the winter , when it was resolved unanimously that a ball should be given by the brethren before Christinas , and a committee was at once formed to carry it into effect .

UxnniDGE . —Royal Union Lodge ( No . 536 ) . —This Lodge , holding its meetings at the AVhito Horse Hotel , is placed on the list of country Lodges , but belongs to no province ; hence it is but little known . The roll of Lod ges in the province having been called over , all ivere found to be represented , except All Saints' Lodge , No . 161 , AVoolor . the minutes of tho last annual
meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge were read and confirmed . Tho representatives of the various Lodges of the province present , on being called upon for their customary report , made a highly satisfactory statemen t of the condition and proceedings of then- Lodges . The All Saints' Lodge , No . 161 , AVooler , having neglected to attend the lrovmcial Grand Lod ge meetings for several years , although regularly served with notices , nor having made any returns or payments during that
period , the Prov . Grand Secretary was instructed to issue a peremptory summons requiring the attendance of the Master of the said Lodge before the R . AV . Prov . Grand Master and his officers , on a day to be fixed upon , to be prepared to produce the warrant of the Lodge , anil all books , papers , and accounts belonging thereto . S . B ., Sec . to No . Of , seconded by Bro . Verrall , Prov . G . Treas ., it was resolved " That the brethren of this Lodge desire to express the gratification with
ivhich they meet their AVorshipful AIaster , Bro . John AVilson . ou this day to celebrate his Masonic jubilee , and they most cordially congratulate him on the satisfaction he must feel in having ivitnessecl the successful resuscitation of this his mother Lodge , whioh , from unavoidable circumstances had been unable to meet for so many years . This Lodge was founded in 1730 , and was named the Howard Lodge of Brotherly Love , in honour of the eighth Duke of Norfolk , ivho was installed Most AVorshipful Grand Master of England in 1830 . Preston says : — "Amongst other proofs of
his attachment to the fraternity , he sent from Italy . £ 20 for the charities , a largo book for the records of Grand Lodgo , richly bound in Turkey , and gilt , with the arms of Norfolk and those of Grand Lodge elegantly emblazoned ; and a sworel of state , being the old trusty SAvord of Gustavus Adolphus , King of SAvedon , which was next worn byBernhard , Duke of Saxo AVoimar , with both their names on the blade and the arms of Norfolk in silver on the scabbard . " In 1789 this Loelge , which had been held in London , was moveel to Arundel , and was then No . 51 ; in
1811 , after tho union of the tivo Grand Lodges , ifc was No . 72 , and in 1833 , Avhen the vacancies in the list of Lodges were filled up , it AA'as made No . 01 ; from unavoidable circumstances this Lodge did not meet from 1830 till July in tho present year , when it ivas resuscitated , anel the arrears of fees paid up to Grand Lodge aud Prov . Grand Lodge . At the first meeting in July , three of the members ivere present , whose united ages amounted to tAvo hundred aud forty-three years , the AA ' orshipful Master being one of them ; he was initiated in this Lodge
October 20 th , 1809 . It is a little singular and very gratifying to the Freemasons of Sussex that one of the brethren AA'IIO assisted to resuscitate this Lodgo should this year have had tho honour of being the Grand Sword Bearer to the M . AV . Grand Master , and that the Lodgo should havo been named after the Grand Master who presented the sword of state to the Grand Lodge . This Lodge has now eighteen subscribing members , and promises to be a happy and united band of brothers . May success attend it . The Duke of Norfolk is Earl of Arundel , a feudal honour by the possession of Arundel Castle only , without any creation , adjudged in iiarliament , July , 1483 .
