The Lodge was again resumed to the first degree , and the W . M . announced that the ballot would be taken for Messrs . F . G . Hardy , J . W . Tredwen and C . Reports Of Meetings.

Bro . Croxson I . P . M . proposed that a Past Master ' s jewel of the value of ten guineas should be presented to Bro . Gabell W . M ., on the coming night of installation . If ever a jewel had been well earned it was by their present W . M ., who had shown great ability during his year of Office . The W . M . in a few highly appreciative terms thanked the Brethren for their great kindness .

There being no further transactions requiring attention , the Lodge was closed in harmony , and the Brethren retired to the banquetting room , where one of those excellent dinners for which the esteemed Hostess Mrs . Venables is so highly renowned was provided .

The cloth being removed the W . M . presented the toast of the Queen and the Craft , which was duly honoured , as also were the other usual introductory ones . Bro . Croxson assumed command of the gavel and said it was

probably the last time he would have that pleasure . He was pleased to see that the W . M . had gained the confidence of the Skelmersdale Lodge ; his work during his year ' s Office had been admirable , and he called upon the Brethren to give the W . M . a good Masonic fire , to which the Brethren most willingly attended .

Bro . Gabell W . M . returned his thanks , but he did not think it was anything particular that the W . M . of a Lodge should know his duties . He hoped the W . M .-elect would follow" the good example of the Past Masters . In proposing the toast of the W . M .-elect the W . M . utilised the oft repeated quotation " The king is dead , long live the king . "

He was sure the W . M .-elect could do his work well , and that the Brethren would not regret having elected Bro . Rawlings as their ruler . He lived a long distance away , but attended most of their meetings . Bro . Rawlings had followed in his steps , working from the bottom of the ladder , and he assured them all that he knew the duties , and that they would find him a well appointed Worshipful Master for the Skelmersdale Lodge .

The W . M .-elect , on rising , received a hearty ovation . He thanked the W . M . for his very kind remarks , and also sincerely thanked him and the Past Masters , Officers and Brethren for having elected him as Worshipful Master . Pie had travelled about 5 , miles to attend the meetings of the Skelmersdale Lodge ; Masonry

was a hobby with him . Ten years ago he was on the right of the W . M . as an initiate , and then his ambition was to work up to the honourable position to which he had been elected that evening . He knew the W . M . did not like long speeches , but on his installation night he should have a little more to say . Again he thanked them all .

The Visitors toast was now submitted by the W . M ., who gave them a most hearty welcome . Bro . Parker , in response , said he was most delighted with the meeting . Not alone had he enjoyed a real Masonic treat in the Lodge , but he had enjoyed himself at the banqueting table , and he sincerely thanked Bro . Croxson I . P . M . for his kind invite . He also complimented the Officers on the able assistance they had rendered their chief .

Bro . Ball P . M . said he knew the ability of the W . M ., who had well earned the Past Master ' s jewel which was that evening unanimouslv voted to him . The Brethren had shown high appreciation of their W . M ., and he hoped the Brethren will look upon him as an adornment to the Lodge . He hoped his esteemed friend and Brother would live for many years , in health and prosperity , to wear the jewel it had been decided to give him .

Bro . D . P . Donovan was pleased at receiving such a hearty reception ; it was the first time he had visited a London Lodge , and he had been struck with the excellent working . He should like to say much more , but his health would not allow it . He thanked the W . M . and Brethren for their kindness .

The Past Masters' toast was next given in warm terms . Bro . W . H . Boys P . M . Secretary thanked the W . M . for the toast , and the Brethren for receiving it in so cordial a manner . The Past Masters studied the welfare of the Lodge . The funds in the hands of the Treasurer showed the Lodge to be in a good position . He hoped to see a good record made on the occasion of the Ladies night .

The toast of the Officers was next given . The W . M . was pleased the Wardens knew their work . Bro . Cohen had discharged duties as acting S . D . in an admirable manner , and he hoped the coming W . M . would give him a collar on his installation night . He was sorry the S . D . was unable to attend , on account of family indisposition .

Bro . Palmer J . W ., in response , thanked the W . M . for his kind remarks . He strongly advised the Officers to attend to their various duties ; if they could not attend during their year of office they should not be appointed , as they prevented other Brethren , who were anxious to fulfil the duties , getting into office .

Bro . Cohen also thanked the W . M . for his very kind recognition . He was always" willing to discharge any duties whenever called upon , without expectation of getting Office as a reward . During the evening some excellent songs were rendered by Bros . R . Rowland , Culleyford , Percy Nilen , Williams , and Shaw , whilst Bro . Humphrey Cohen gave a very humorous recitation . Brother 1-rummer added some clever lightning sketches . Bro . A . E . Kipps presided at the piano with his usual ability .
