ROYAL ALFRED LODGE , No . 877 . THE installation meeting was held on Tuesday , the llth instant , at the Masonio Temple , Jersey . Tho Lodgo was opened by Brother Captain Hugh Stevenson W . M ., and the minutes having been confirmed , Bro . J . N . de la Verrelle 589 was balloted for as a joining member and unanimously elected , after which Brother Newenham was passed to the F . C . degree . Brother Dr . John Le Cromer D . P . G . M . then occupied the chair , and in a very able manner

installed Brother Dr . Maxwell Le Cronier S . W . W . M . elect . The installation ceremony was the more impressive by the fact that it was the father who was installing his son as Master of tbe Lodge , a circumstance which seldom occurs in the annuls of Freemasonry . Both the Installing Master and the W . M . elect showed the utmost appreciation of the solemnity of the ceremony in

whioh they were the chief actors . The brethreu present were greatly impressed by the masterly manner in which the Installina : Master discharged his duties , the more so on account of the great respect in which he is held by all the brethren of the Province . Tbe newly-iustallad Master then proceeded to invest Brother Captain II . Stevenson as I . P . M ., and gave the explanation of the Past Master ' s

jewel in suoh an efficient manner that it proved him to be thoroughly prepared for the position he now occupied . The Board of Installed Masters , of whom no fewer than 26 were present , having been closed , the brethren were re-admitted , and the W . M . invested his Officers ; tbe charge to the Wardens and the final oharge to the Brethren being eloquently delivered by the Installing Master . The following

Officers were appointed : —Brothers Malet de Carteret S . W ., Godfray P . M . 1003 J . W ., Dr . Godfray P . M . Treasurer , Dr . Godfrey S . D ., De la Perrelle J . D ., Captain Swan I . G ., and Rogers Tyler . At tha close of the ceremony 51 brethren safc down to the banquet prepared by Brother Rogers , which was in every way satisfactory . Amongst those present were Bros . Colonel E . 0 . Malet de Carteret

After the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts had been duly honoured , several

brethren contributed to fcho harmony of the evening , amongst whom we noticed Bros . Spratfc , MoKee , Broadhurst , Stevenson . Bisson , and Wilson , whilst Brother Fentum kindly accompanied them on tbe piano . Special mention must be made wifch regard to Bro . Spvau ' a ( a visiting brother from England ) magnificent voice . The Tyler ' s toast terminated a most enjoyable and thoroughly harmonious meeting .

EXCELSIOR LODGE , No . 1042 . THE regular monthly meeting of this Lodge was held at the Masonio Hall , Great George Street , Leeds , on Thursday , tbe 20 th ult ., when the following Officers and brethren were present : — Bros . Bowers 265 , Dyall 636 , and Crowthor 306 . The minutes of tbe last regular Lodge having been read and signod , the ballot was taken for Mr . J . W . Hargreaves as a candidate for initiation , and for Brother Eoufcledge as a joining member , and in both oases proved to be unanimously favourable . Mr . Hargreaves was afterwards regularly initiated by the Worshipful Master , assisted by Bro . Thompson , the

working tools being explained by the Junior Warden , and fche ancient oharge delivered by fche Secretary . Brother Foster was dnly passed to the degree of F . C . by Brother Thorp , fche working tools being explained by the Senior Warden . The Worshipful Master announced thafc the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . T . W . Tew , J . P ., had presented to the Lodge a copy of the volume of his " Masonic

Addresses , " which had been recently published by Bro . Matthewman P . M . 1019 , and ifc was resolved that the interesting gift should be suitably acknowledged . A very pleasing feature of the evening ' s proceedings was the ro-appearance in the Lodge , after a long and dangerous illness , of Brother Allison , and the Worshipful Master tendered to the venerable brother fche congratulations of the Lodge

on his recovery . Brother Allison cordially thanked tho brethren for their kind expressions of sympathy , and for their many kindnesses daring his illness . The hearty congratulations of the Lodge were also tendered to Brother Cowbrongh , on having conferred upon him fche previous day the rank of Provincial Grand Junior . Dea ** on , an honour ifc was generally felfc was richly merited . Brother Cowbrough ,

is responding , stated that although he valued the honour very greatly , be felfc that ifc had been conferred upon the Lodge rather than upon himself , on account of the generous support which had for so many years been given to the noble Charities of the Order . Hearty good wishes having been tendered by the visiting brethren , the Lodge was closed .

CALLENDER LODGE , No . 1052 . THE installation meeting of this Lodge , which was constituted ir 1865 , was held on Saturday , 29 th ulfc ., at Freemasons' Hull , Manchester , by dispensation . from the Prov . Grand Master ( Bro . of K . S . The beautiful ritual of installation waa woll treated by Bro . Start , and in a manner that must leave a lasting impression on the new Worshipfnl Master and the brethren who heard him . Brother Savage , who had the hononr of serving under the Provincial Grand Master of the sister Province of West Lancashire , suitably responded . Brothor T . W . K . Start

submitted the health of the W . M . Brother John Smith , and in so doing reminded those present that in Brother Smith they bad a Mason who was desirous to carry oufc fche best traditions of Masonry , aud one who was held in high esteem and one who would carry out the work in the Callender Lodge in a praiseworthy manner . The W . M . in reply said : "I rise to respond to the toast of my health

wifch a very great amount of diffidence , and I thank my brother Immediate Past Master for the manner in which he placed my name before yon , ond I thank you all for the generous acclamation with which you were good enough to receive it . I feel in having attained the ohair of K . S . thafc I have entered upon a great responsibility ; I know I follow a very able Master and one whom I hardly expect to

equal , bat as far as my ability extends I hope to perform the duties of this ohair to the satisfaction of the members of the Callender Lodgo . It would ill become me to make great promises or say what I shall do , but at the end of ray year of office I hope you will bo able to say I have done well . As far as my abilities serve me I will endeavour to show thafc yonr confidence reposed in me has been well

placed . I am following a very good band of able Past Masters who have filled this chair with credit to themselves and lustre to the Craft , and if I cannot hope to attain to their proficiency , I shall with the help of my Officers carry oufc the work correctly in detail eo that oar Lodge may continue to maintain its present high prestige . In

thanking you very heartily I hope my health may be spared to promote the best interests of this Lodge . " The W . M . proposed in eulogistic terms the Installing Master , and in so doing had tho pleasing task of presenting the Brother with a Past Master ' s jewel , whioh was a massive gold one suitably engraved , as follows : —

" Presented by the Callender Lodge , No . 10 o 2 , to Bro . T . W . K . START , For valuable services as W . M ., 1892 . 93 . " Brother Start feelingly replied and thanked the brethren for the kind way in which they had been good enough to express pleasure

for hid services , while he assured them the work was very pleasant to him . Brother Walker in a neat speech gave the toast of the Visiting Brethren , whioh was acknowledged appropriately by Brothers Savage , Leight , Farringfcon , Broughton , Hilton , and Leathaby . Brother Brierly in a few chosen words proposed fche Pasfc Masters of the Lodge , and reminded those present that the

P . M . ' s were ever willing to work to keep the Lodge up to its present position of excellence . The response was left in the able hands of Brother D . Edwards P . M ., who was the second W . M . of the Lodge . Brother Edwards said— " I cannot avoid answering such an excellent speech made so forcibly—and in truth I believe—by Brother Brierly . The Past Masters of this Lodge have always done their very best to

support tbe W . M . and to assist the junior Officers , and to forward the interests and welfare of the members of tbe Lodge generally . With regard to the pa > t history of the Lodge only three Past Masters have ceased to be subscribing members voluntarily , Somo have died and other * have removed , and there has been some tangible reason for their ceasing connection wifch our Lodge . From Bro . Cullender do wu to

our latest W . M . installed this day we have had a list of Masters second to no Lodge in Lancashire at any rate , and I think much of fche snccess of the Lodge is due to the unanimity which exists within it . I do not know of two members of the Lodge who are not heart and soul together , and I know of no member who would use a harsh or unkind word of another member . It is gratifying to know thero is such perfect unity and suoh a happy state of perfection existing .

I do not know a member either who ia nt all likely to need any assistance . If such were the case it ia onr proud position that we would be able and willing to assist bin * or them , but fortune seems to have shone upon us all as regards our actual needs any way . Wo have , Worshipful Sir , as Past Masters undertaken to obey and support you in your office , and ns we have ever dono so in the past , so will we do now and in the future . " Brother Campbell also replied .

wifch a very great amount of diffidence , and I thank my brother Immediate Past Master for the manner in which he placed my name before yon , ond I thank you all for the generous acclamation with which you were good enough to receive it . I feel in having attained the ohair of K . S . thafc I have entered upon a great responsibility ; I know I follow a very able Master and one whom I hardly expect to

equal , bat as far as my ability extends I hope to perform the duties of this ohair to the satisfaction of the members of the Callender Lodgo . It would ill become me to make great promises or say what I shall do , but at the end of ray year of office I hope you will bo able to say I have done well . As far as my abilities serve me I will endeavour to show thafc yonr confidence reposed in me has been well

placed . I am following a very good band of able Past Masters who have filled this chair with credit to themselves and lustre to the Craft , and if I cannot hope to attain to their proficiency , I shall with the help of my Officers carry oufc the work correctly in detail eo that oar Lodge may continue to maintain its present high prestige . In

thanking you very heartily I hope my health may be spared to promote the best interests of this Lodge . " The W . M . proposed in eulogistic terms the Installing Master , and in so doing had tho pleasing task of presenting the Brother with a Past Master ' s jewel , whioh was a massive gold one suitably engraved , as follows : —

" Presented by the Callender Lodge , No . 10 o 2 , to Bro . T . W . K . START , For valuable services as W . M ., 1892 . 93 . " Brother Start feelingly replied and thanked the brethren for the kind way in which they had been good enough to express pleasure

for hid services , while he assured them the work was very pleasant to him . Brother Walker in a neat speech gave the toast of the Visiting Brethren , whioh was acknowledged appropriately by Brothers Savage , Leight , Farringfcon , Broughton , Hilton , and Leathaby . Brother Brierly in a few chosen words proposed fche Pasfc Masters of the Lodge , and reminded those present that the

P . M . ' s were ever willing to work to keep the Lodge up to its present position of excellence . The response was left in the able hands of Brother D . Edwards P . M ., who was the second W . M . of the Lodge . Brother Edwards said— " I cannot avoid answering such an excellent speech made so forcibly—and in truth I believe—by Brother Brierly . The Past Masters of this Lodge have always done their very best to

support tbe W . M . and to assist the junior Officers , and to forward the interests and welfare of the members of tbe Lodge generally . With regard to the pa > t history of the Lodge only three Past Masters have ceased to be subscribing members voluntarily , Somo have died and other * have removed , and there has been some tangible reason for their ceasing connection wifch our Lodge . From Bro . Cullender do wu to

our latest W . M . installed this day we have had a list of Masters second to no Lodge in Lancashire at any rate , and I think much of fche snccess of the Lodge is due to the unanimity which exists within it . I do not know of two members of the Lodge who are not heart and soul together , and I know of no member who would use a harsh or unkind word of another member . It is gratifying to know thero is such perfect unity and suoh a happy state of perfection existing .

I do not know a member either who ia nt all likely to need any assistance . If such were the case it ia onr proud position that we would be able and willing to assist bin * or them , but fortune seems to have shone upon us all as regards our actual needs any way . Wo have , Worshipful Sir , as Past Masters undertaken to obey and support you in your office , and ns we have ever dono so in the past , so will we do now and in the future . " Brother Campbell also replied .
