The Worship ful Master proposed tbe newly invested Officers , which was responded to by Bros . Thorp S . W . and Todd J . W . The toast of the Callender Lodge was ably put forward by Brother Jones , and the Masonic Charities by Brother Wrigley , and the Tyler's toast brought the list to a close . A good musical programme was interspersed

between the speeches , and among the brethren who contributed either with song or recitation were—B rothers Robert Williams , Seth Wrigley , Joddrill , McKay , Jones , Ridley , Todd , Steel , A . J . Tonkin , and Shaw . Brother Falls kindly accompanied and gave a solo on the piano , and Brother Wrigley delighted every one with a skilful performance on the auto-harp .

Visitors : —Brothers John Parker 993 , J . Preston 2 S 9 , D . Walmsley 289 , and William : * . The Lodge was duly opened with harmony and prayer at 5 * 45 , after which the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and

confirmed . Brothers Summerton and Barber having expressed their desiro to become M . M . ' s , were questioned iu the usual way , and having proved their efficiency were each entrusted with a test of merit and retired . Subsequently Brother Summerton was raised to the sublime degree by Brother Parker W . M ., whilst Brother Higham officiated in the case of Barber , the working tools in each instance

being presented and explained by Brother Birkbeck . Both ceremonies were performed in a very excellent manner , and reflected great credit upon all taking part in them . The names of two gentlemen wore submitted as candidates for initiation , and they will be put ; to the ballot in the ordinary way . Tbe summons from Provincial Grand Lodge , announcing the meeting afc

Ashtou-under-Lyne , on Wednesday , 17 th inst ., was read ; and hearty good wishes were expressed by visiting brethren . The AV . M . intimated thafc it was his intention to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday , llth May , for the purpose of performing two ceremonies of raising whioh are due . Tho Lodge was then closed in peace and harmony . At the festive board whioh followed , fche vory interesting fact was

conveyed to tlie meeting thafc Brothor Hoyland P . M . had completed his 21 st anniversary of membership , and Brother Higham , acting upon this information , proposed a toast on his behalf , wishing him long life , health , and prosperity , afc tho aarno timo calling npou the brethren to accord him the requisite Masonio honours * . Brothor Hoyland briefly responded .

ALBERT VICTOR LODGE , No . 1778 . frill !*] monthly mooting of this Lorigc was held at tho Town Hall , -L Pendleton , on Friday , 21 st ult ., Brother Thomas Tbrelfall W . M . Thero wero also present : —Brothers ; J . L . Smith I . P . M ., Thomas T .

Richard Dnxbury P . P . G . S . B ., F . Townson , Thomas Kay , Edward Holland , Eli Winterbottom , Edward Roberta ( FKKKMASON ' CHRONICLE ) ; Bros . H Carver , W . Brans by , J . Harwood , J . Handley , Richard Hilton , William Woodeson , Walter H . Basalt . Visitor : — Brother J . Bowers P . M . 1730 . The minutes of the orevions mooting having been read and confirmed , Brother John H irwood , who had

expressed a desire to become a F . C , was subjected o the t ., ua . test , and having proved himself efficient , retired for j eparation , after which he was duly passed by tho Worshipful Master . Bro . Throlfoll is favoured by having a number of excellent working Past Masters to support him , but on this occasion he demonstrated to them that they wero almost in danger of becoming a negligible quantity , the

ceremony being performed by him with signal success . Brother William Allen Smith subsequently lectured on tho first tracing board . At tho present time this Brother occupies the position of Steward in tho Lodge , and we were struck with the progress he had made , and the perfect way in wheih he acquitted himself . As tho result of inquiries , we learned that he is an old member of tho Craft ,

having been initiated in the Royal Alfred Lod ge , No . S 77 , Jersey , of which his father was a Past Master and very active member , the latter being also one of the founders of St . Aubyn ' s Lodge , No . 958 . This , no doubt , accounts for Brother Smith ' s mastery of the difficult subject which he undertook . Afc the festive board which followed , tho usual Loyal and Masonio

toasts were honoured , the same being varied by songe , sketches , 4 c , by Bros . Bowers , Clarkson , Blease , Bransby , and Eoberts . Brother Harrop , in proposiug the toast of the newly-passed Brother , said that be was desirous of impressing upon Bro . Harwood the fact that every member pf the Lodge felt a pleasure in having him amongst them , not only as a brother , but aa a neighbour also . Upon the first mention of his name as a candidate for initiation , universal satisfac .

tion was expressed , ifc being anticipated that he would prove au excellent Mason , and ba a credit to the Lodge : indeed had thoy been allowed a choice in selection , they could not possibly havo chosen a better man . He felt assured that what Bro . Harwocd had already ^ eeu would convince him that what we believe we also practise , and tbe practice of Masonry teaches us amongst other things that when our time in this world is ended we shall be ablo to sink to rest , and sleep with the assurance that we may ascend to the Grand Lodge

above . Bro . Harwood ' s nexfc step in fche science would afford more favourable opportunities of revealing the whole system , and no doubt tho ceremony would go homo to him . Bro . Harrop concluded au excellent speech by saying that he felt it to be a very great privilege thus to welcome Bro . Harwood as a Fellow Craffc Freemason . In response , Bro . Harwood said he felfc that he could not adequately

express what he had in his mind . It was perhaps well that until a moment or two ago he was unaware of the fact that ho should be called upon for a speech , as a similar knowledge upon the evening of his initiation had provided for him an anxious quarter of an hoar . Certain remarks which he had listened to had been a sort of intimation thafc a similar duty would be expected from him on the nexfc

occasion , which he could assure them would cause him to have a very uncomfortable month . Bro . Holland , who proposed tbe toast of tbe Visiting Brethren , reverted inoidentaily to the ceremony , whioh he admitted had been mosfc beautifully performed by the W . M . and hia Officers . Bro . Bowers in response said he thanked them for their cordiality . It was not the first time he had visited their Lodge , and

he had invariably left it , having been very much impressed with tho manner in whioh the work was done . The ceremony of thafc evening as performed by Bro . Threlfall had been very impressive , and must have appeared so to the candidate . Bro . Hilton proposed the toast of the Pasfc Masters . He said thafc the Albert Victor Lodge could boast * the possession of the best Past Masters he knew of . A brother

visitor bad referred to the manner in which they supported their principal Officer , and when in request how admirably they performed their duties every one knew . One of them ( Bro . Kay ) had that evening evinced the deep regard he felt for the Lodge by making a presentation to it , and another of them ( Bro . Townson ) was always fco tbe fore in matters of charity . In fact they were all good hard

workers , who had the interest of tho Lodge afc heart , who looked after the Officers , and took care thafc what the latter undertook should be done in a right manner . Bro . Kay , who responded on behalf of the Past Masters , said he hardly thought thafc what he had just given to the Lodge was worth the time it had occupied . He

sincerely felfc that to be a Past Master of such a Lodge was indeed a credit , the members were all so harmonious and agreeable towards each other : no bickerings and no jealousies had yet marred the pleasure of their meetings , and their whole object appeared to be thafc of doing the best they could for the welfare of each other . Brother Carver proposed the toasfc of the Officers , who afterwards responded .

being performed by their natural brother , Brother F . P . Hill P . M ., whose work was of a faultless character . Brother List was re-appointed Tyler , and an Audit

Committee named . On the motion of Brother T . Johnson sen ., a Committee was appointed to revise thobye-1 iws , and this concluded a long agenda . Iu the interval the health of th « Initiates was given by the Worshipful Master and heartily received , and the Brothers Hill male reply in well chosen words . Bro . W . E .
