Our Weekly Budget.
one of tho appointed days at the West Brompton Grounds . They will certainly be rewarded by seeing some marvellous athletic feats . In France , the new Ministry are gradually settling down to their work , and the Chambers are now fully constituted .
It is impossible to foresee what is on the carpet , but at present , things appear to work smoothly enough . At Berlin , has been celebrated the centennial anniversary of the birth of Queen Louise , mother of the Emperor William , whose memory is dear to all Prussians for the generous
part she played in the great war , when her utmost efforts were directed towards achieving the independence of her country from the galling rule of the first Napoleon . Nor is she moreover less revered for the indignities she was called upon to endure at the hands of that imperious
conqueror . Carlism has collapsed utterly , and all that now remains to be done is to pacify the districts which were so recently the theatre of war . The more complete the amnesty extended towards the Carlists by the Ministers of
King Alphonso , the sooner this desirable object is likely to be achieved . In the disaffected districts of the Turkish Empire , matters are much as they were . We hear occasional rumours of the defeat of the Turks , but neither
side appears to be able to act decisively . However , an important leader among the insurgents , with an unpronounceable name , has been arrested by an Austrian patrol on Austrian territory . In Italy , there appears to be a prospect of a Ministerial crisis , while from the United
States we have news of a fire having broken out in an Almshouse at Norwich , Connecticut , resulting in the loss of fourteen lives . According to latest advices , the Egyptians
appear to have inflicted a serious defeat on King John of Abyssinia , and the latter is said to be suing for peace . Beyond these few items , there is little or nothing to record of interest in connection with foreign politics .
It is contrary to our usual custom to draw attention to the case of any candidate for either of our Charitable Institutions , but we have been requested to bring under the notice of the subscribers to the lioyal Masonic Institution for Girls to tlic ( second ) application for
election next April of little Lucretia Wilton , aged 7 \ years , the daughter of a brother who long resided in tho East , and who has left a widow wi ; h four children in great need . The Lodge , No . 508 ( Singapore ) , to which Bro . Wilton belonged , has distinguished itself by regular
subscriptions to all our Charities for nearly thirty years , besides large contributions to Grand Lodge Benevolent Fund . This is , we believe , the first time that aid has been solicited on the Lodge ' s behalf . It is , moreover , noteworthy that Singapore , where our late brother resided , is
a central port of call , and that the wants of distressed brethren passing through arc supplied by the local Lodges and their members to a considerable amount every year . Charity is extensively practised by them , and we doubt not that brethren at home who may have votes undisposed
of will , under these circumstances , be most ready to reciprocate their noble efforts , and will help the case of this orphan , which , besides the highest local recommendation , is supported by that veteran in Masonry , Brother
Alexander Dobie , Past Provincial Grand Master of Surrey , and other well-known patrons of the Charity . Proxies will be gratefully received at Spencer ' s Masonic Depot , opposite Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street , London .
A meeting of the general committee of the Cheshire Educational Institution will be held this day , at the Masonic Chambers , 55 Argyle-street , Birkenhead , for tho purpose of taking into consideration an application for the education of Walter Meacuck , ao-ed 9 yrars , son of the In re Bro .
Robert Mcucock , Mersey Lodge , No . 477 , Birkenhead , as well as applications for the advancement of Louisa and Elizabeth , aged Vii and 14 years respectively , daughters ol the above , and Samuel Foden , aged 15 years , son of the late Bro . C . Foden , Lodge No . 205 , Macclesfield . II
these applications should be favourably entertained , the committee will then determine the amounts to be voted , and commend them for adoption at the next Court of
Governors , to bo held at Crewe ou Wednesday , the 29 th inst . Among the other business for to-day is to receive the Treasurer ' s Accounts as Audited , and Auditors' Report , the audit being fixed , for the convenience of the brethren , at 12 o ' clock , This Educational Institution is indeed a credit
to the county of Chester . Its advantages are limited to Cheshire Masons , the children being educated at schools in the neighbourhood of their own homes . When the education is over , situations are provided , and up to the ago of 19 a sum is annually voted towards the expenses of their
maintenance . There are now 23 children in the enjoyment of these advantages , and last year the capital of the Institution reached the handsome sum of £ 2 , 216 . No
opportunity is lost of adding to tho funds . It is not so very long since we recorded an entertainment by Bro . Chas . Duval , an Irish brother , one-half of the proceeds of which was handed over to this Institution . On the 23 rd and 24 th ult .
was given a grand amateur dramatic performance , and the result was a further increase of the funds to the extent of from £ 80 to £ 100 . The performance consisted of the farce entitled Two Polls , and Shakspeare ' s tragedy of Macbeth , and was under the patronage of Lord de Tabley
P . G . M . Cheshire , Sir Watkin W . Wynn P . G . M . Shropshire and North Wales , Earl of Shrewsbury P . G . M . Staffordshire , Lord Skelmersdale P . G . M . West Lancashire , Lords Combermere and Richard Grosvenor , Earl of Bective
P . G . M ., Cumberland and Westmoreland , Lord Sandon , and a numerous array of influential brethren . The male performers were all Masons , and the performance gave general satisfaction .
Bro . Richard Leigh Davies , No . 511 , announces Ms first benefit at the Duke ' s Theatre , Holborn , on Saturday , 8 th April , on which occasion an entire change of performance will take place .
