INSTALLATION MEETINGS , & c .

UNITED STRENGTH LODGE , No . 228 . A MEETING of the members of this old and efficient Lodge was held on Tuesday evening last , at the Guildhall Tavern , when there was a goodly attendance of tbe brethren and visitors , under the presidency of Bro . A . H . Hickman W . M ., who was supported by Bros . H . W . Alford S . W ., T . J . Hunt J . W ., James Terry P . M . and Treasurer ( Secretary Royal Masonio Benevolent Institution ) , E Davies Acting Secretary , Georgo Bellot J . D ., George W . Edis D . C , W . Wright

Organist ; P . M . ' s Alfred Colston , Robert Snare , T . H . Bromley , James Hillhonse ; William Bray , W . J . Randall , G . C . Tidy , Vilett Rollestou , J . Evetts , W . B . Lodge was opened at half-past five o ' clock , in accordance with customary formalities , the Lodge being draped in mourning , in token of regret at the demise of Bro . T . A . Winsland , who had so long and zealously discharged the duties of Treasurer , and whose death , about a month ago , excited the most sincere sorrow amongst

a very wide circle of his Masonic and other friends . Lodge having been advanced , Bros . John Lobb , John Thomas Ashley , James Jennings , arid John Holland , having answered the interrogatories satisfactorily , were subsequently passed to the degree of Fellow Craft by the Worshipfnl Master , who performed the ceremony in a highly satisfactory manner . Some other business having been transacted ,

the brethren adjourned to the throne room of the hotel , where a recherche banquet was served by Bros . Ritter and Clifford , whose arrangements , nnder the personal superintendence of Bro . Henry Mills , elicited the most unqualified expressions of approbation . Dessert having been placed npon the tables , the customary Loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair , and duly honoured . In the course of the proceedings , feeling allusion was made to the death of

the late Treasurer , and in Lodge it was nnanimously resolved that a letter of condolence should be forwarded to the relatives of Bro . Winsland , expressive of the deep sorrow entertained by tho brethren at the loss they had sustained , and of appreciation of the manner in which he discharged the duties of his office . The various toasts were interspersed by vocal and instrumental music , and altogether a very harmonious and agreeable evening was passed .

PORTSMOUTH LODGE . No , 487 .

THERE was a large attendance of brethren at the meeting of this Lodge , at the Masonic Hall , Highbury-street , Portsmouth , on Thursday evening , 9 th inst ., when Bro . R . W . Beale S . W . was installed as the W . Master for the ensuing year . Tbe ceremony of installation was performed in an impressive and efficient manner by the retiring W-M . Bro . J . P . Palsgrave . After the ceremony W . Bro . Beale appointed and invested his Officers as follow : —Bros . T . P .

Before the Lodge was closed the following resolution was proposed , in appropriate terms , by the

Worshipful Master ( Bro . Beale ) , seconded by Bro . Mark E . Frost P . M . P . G . Treas ., and carried with acclamation : — That we , the W . M ., Wardens , and Brethren of tho Portsmouth Lodge , No . 487 , of Free and Accepted Masons , meeting at Portsmonth , in open Lodge assembled , desire to convey to yonr Majesty , through our Most Worshipfnl Grand Master His Royal Highness tho

Prince of Wales , onr most sincere congratulations on yonr recent providential escape from the hands of an assassin . Wo furthermore wish to convey to yonr Majesty onr loyalty and devotion as Freemasons to your throne and person , and devoutly pray that the Great Architect of the Universe may long spare yonr life to be a blessing to the people of this great nation over whom yon rale . The brethren then sang the National Anthem . The Worshipful

Master presented to Bro . Palsgrave a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , subscribed for by members of the Lodge , in token of the appreciation of his efficient ruling of the Lodge during tbe past twelve months , and referred in eulogistic terms to the admirable manner in which the ceremony of installation had been carried out by him that evening . After the Lodge , the brethren adjourned to the banquetting room , where a recherche banquet was provided by Mr . W . Bond of the Dolphin Hotel , Portsmonth . The new W . M . presided .

FAWCETT LODGE , No . 661 .

THHE brethren of this Lodge met on the 13 tl \ inst ., afc the Masonic J- Hall , Seabam Harbour , when Brother Shepherd was installed in the chair of K . S . by Bro . Ayre P . M . He afterwards invested hia Officers for tbo ensning year . Brother H . W . Emerson presided in the absence , through illness , of Brother Sinclair W . M . The annnal

banquet followed , at the Lord Seabam Inn , the newly-elected W . M , Bro . Shepherd presided , and was supported by severel Provincial and other Officers , including Bros . J . Clay , H . B . Wright , R . Cand . lish , W . Liddell , R . B . Lntert , and others .

Wellington Lodge , No . 784 . —A numerously attended meeting of this Lodge took place at the Public Rooms , Deal , on

Thursday , the 9 th inst . The Worshipful Master ( Bro . J . F . Soll y ) said that since their last meeting they had all heard of the dastardl y attempt made upon the life of their Most Gracious Sovereign . Such a rile attack on so beloved a Qneen , and so good a woman , was heard of with horror and detestation throughout the land . Whether the miscreant was insane or not did not affect the crime ; no doubt he would be properly cared for , as he deserved to be . He could only

ask them to join with him in expressing heartfelt thanks that the Great Architect of the Universe had interposed His All-protecting arm to spare so good a life for her family and subjects . He would propose that an address of congratulation , on the occasion of Her Majesty ' s happy escape from the hand of the assassin , be forwarded from this Lodge to His Royal Highness the Most Worshipful Grand Master . This was seconded by Bro . Apps , the senior Past Master , and carried unanimously .

St . John of Wapping Lodge , No . 1306 . —The regular meeting of this Lodge was held on Wednesday , 8 th inst ., at the Moorgate Tavern , 15 Finsbnry-pavement , E . John Legg Green , which proved unanimous . The candidate nofc being present , the initiation ceremony waa deferred . Bro . S . M . Pipe was subsequently passed to the degree of Fellow Craft . Lodge resumed to the first degree , when the election of W . M . for the ensuing year took place , and resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Thomas Wooding the S . W ., who thanked the brethren for the honour they

had conferred npon him ; he would endeavour , —in fact he had determined to study the welfare of the Lodge in every possible way , and the brethren would see thafc nothing shonld be wanting on his part to promote the prosperity of the Sfc . John of Wapping Lodge . Bro . Beck P . M . was re-elected Treasurer , and briefly returned thanks . Brother Longstaff was re-elected to fulfil the duties of Tyler .

The business of appointing the Audit Committee was next in order , and this being disposed of , Bro . Dawson proposed , and Bro . Beck seconded , that the Lodge should present their retiring W . M . with the usual ten guinea jewel as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his labours in the bnsiness of the Lodge for the past year ; this proposition , as might have been expected , was duly carried . A candidate

for initiation having been proposed and seconded , and nothing further offering , the Lodge closed and adjourned till tbe 12 th April . As is customary with this Lodge the brethren afterwards spent a little time in recreation , several capital songs being rendered by those of the brethren blessed with mnsical powers . It might be mentioned thafc during the evening the W . M . alluded to the

diabolical outrage on Her Most Gracious Majesty , full particulars of which they had undoubtedly informed themselves of already . They all knew what a truly English lady the Queen unquestionably was , and when they heard of such an attempt at assassination ifc was painful in the extreme ; he was convinced they were all glad that no harm had befallen her . Without further comment he wonld ask

them to be upstanding , and drink to the health of the Queen , which was done with great enthusiasm . Many other toasts were duly honoured during the evening that of the Tyler bringing the proceedings to a close .

United Pilgrims' Lodge of Instruction , No , 507 . — On Friday evening , the 10 th instant , a very large number of brethren attended the meeting of this Lodge , for the purpose of hearing a lecture on the First Degree by Bro . James Stevens M . P . Z .,

the newly-appointed Preceptor of this Lodge of Instruction . Bro . J . W . Watts P . M . 507 opened the Lodge at half-past seven , supported by the following Officers : —Bros . Butt S . Stevens then proceeded to deliver bis lecture , and the brethreu gave most careful attention ; indeed , all felt that

a little discussion upon some points of ritual was likely to do much good , by interesting those who wish to do something more than repeat words as a parrot would , and to enable all to learn something of tho beauty of the ancient working . At tho completion of the lecture , Bro . Butt was elected W . M . for the next meeting , and the following brethren wero elected members : —Brothers Danks , Martin , Sargeant , R . Poore , Wells , Brander , and Stacey . Bro . H . Lovegrove

proposed a vote of thanks to Bro . Stevens , and touched upon rertain points in tho lectnro affecting not only verbiage , bnt ceremor ial , and expressed his pleasure that Bro . Stevens had taken so much trouble in preparing a lecture which ought to be heard in every Lodgo of Instruction , and carefully considered by the members . The vote of thanks was carried nnanimously , and ordered to ba entered ou tbe minutes . The Lodge was then closed , and the members separated .

They all knew what a truly English lady the Queen unquestionably was , and when they heard of such an attempt at assassination ifc was painful in the extreme ; he was convinced they were all glad that no harm had befallen her . Without further comment he wonld ask

them to be upstanding , and drink to the health of the Queen , which was done with great enthusiasm . Many other toasts were duly honoured during the evening that of the Tyler bringing the proceedings to a close .

Stevens then proceeded to deliver bis lecture , and the brethreu gave most careful attention ; indeed , all felt that

a little discussion upon some points of ritual was likely to do much good , by interesting those who wish to do something more than repeat words as a parrot would , and to enable all to learn something of tho beauty of the ancient working . At tho completion of the lecture , Bro . Butt was elected W . M . for the next meeting , and the following brethren wero elected members : —Brothers Danks , Martin , Sargeant , R . Poore , Wells , Brander , and Stacey . Bro . H . Lovegrove

proposed a vote of thanks to Bro . Stevens , and touched upon rertain points in tho lectnro affecting not only verbiage , bnt ceremor ial , and expressed his pleasure that Bro . Stevens had taken so much trouble in preparing a lecture which ought to be heard in every Lodgo of Instruction , and carefully considered by the members . The vote of thanks was carried nnanimously , and ordered to ba entered ou tbe minutes . The Lodge was then closed , and the members separated .
