of the rites , Lodge was closed in form , and the brethren and visitors partook of a light supper , provided in excellent style by Messrs . Bitter and Clifford , and ou tbe removal of the cloth , the customary Loyal and Craft toasts were honoured , the W . M . alluding in a few happily-chosen sentences to the valuable services rendered to the Craft by the Mo ' st Wor . G . Master and other Officers . Bro . T . Smith P . M ., in proposing the health of the Worshipful Master , alluded in felicitous terms to the admirable manner in which the ceremonies of
the evening had been performed , and to the proud position which the United Mariners continued to hold amongst the Lodges of the metropolis . They had received ample evidence of the interest which Bro . Crossley took in tbe welfare of the Lodge , and they might rest assured that under bis reign the interests of the United Mariners would be amply sustained . The W . M ., iu acknowledging the
comp liment , thanked the brethren for the kindness -which they at all times extended to him , and promised continued assiduity in promoting all that could in any way conduce to the prosperity of the United Mariners Lodge . In turn he gave the health of the Initiate , a toast whioh was always well received in this Lodge . They were ever pleased to welcome good and worthy men amongst
them , and he could assure Bro . Morgan , who had just stepped over the threshold of Masonry , that he had as yet only gained a preliminary glimpse of the beauty and sublimity of those grand principles which guided and actuated the brethren of the mystic tie . He would not now dilate further upon the teachings of Freemasonry , Bro . Morgan had seen a little of them , and no doubt he would
lay to heart what he had seen , and improve by it . Bro . Morgan replied , in a few well-chosen sentences expressing his sense of the honour conferred upon him by admitting him as a member of the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity , and the hope that he might become an apt student of the sublime art . The next toast from the chair was that of the Visitors , whioh the W . M .
said always afforded him especial pleasure to propose ; he only wished they had more visitors on this occasion . He was gratified to see amongst them Bro . Herzog , a brother from the other side of the Atlantic whose name he WODId associate with the toasfc . Bro . Herzo <* in his response , expressed the gratification it had afforded him to visit an English Lodge . The working of the W . M . and his Officers
was equal to anything he had ever seen . It was thirteen or fourteen years since he bad visited a Lodge working in the English language , for since he left the United States , he had visited only German Lodges , which were uot similar in their working to those in England or America . He hoped the United Mariners would continue to flourish , and that the hearty fraternal feeling he had witnessed
amongst the brethren would ever subsist to an increasing degree , In response to the toast of the Past Masters , cordially given by the W . M ., Bro . Joseph Driscoll , Honorary Secretary , congratulated the brethren upon the perfect spirit of harmony which pervaded the Lodge , and upon their united and earnest efforts in the cause of Masonio Charity . Individually , he was proud of occupying the
position he filled in his mother Lodge , and of ranking among its Past Masters . He thanked them heartily for their kindness on this and on all occasions , and he hoped always to deserve the title they had been pleased to confer upon him , as being the " Father" of the Lodge . The W . M . then gave the health of the Officers of the Lodge , acknowledging briefly but sincerely the valuable assistance they at all times accorded to bim in the discharge of his onerous
duties . Bro . Gladwell P . M ., who had officiated as S . W ., in the unavoidable absence of that Officer , and Bro . Lefeaux , who had acted as substitute for the J . W ., severally responded , and the Treasurer , Bro . Joseph Hurling P . M . added a few words in reply to the toasfc , iu which he said , notwithstanding the praiseworthy efforts of the United Mariners in the cause of Masonic Charity , their finances were in a healthy condition , and the balance they had still in hand gave evidence of the admirable manner in which their excellent W . M .
managed the affairs of his Lodge . He trusted this happy condition of things might continue , and that the United Mariners might always work together harmoniously , as they had done in the past . They were a happy , contented brotherhood , and everything augured well
for the continued prosperity of the Lodge . The Tyler ( Bro . C L . Eeinhardt ) o ' osed the official list of toasts , and the remainder of the evening was devoted to harmony , several capital songs being interspersed with recitations , that by Bro . Driscoll P . M ., " The Crew of the Nancy Bell , " being especially well received .
