destroyed by lire on Wednesday morning , a fireman , vvho fell into the smouldering forage , narrowly escaping death . Sir John Gilbert , R . A ., President of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours , has made known to the Lord Mayor of London his intention of presenting a selection of his oil and water-colour paintings , vvhich have been exhibited of late years at Burlington House and Pall Mall , to the Art Gallery of the Corporation of London .

It has been announced that the annual match between selected "Twenties" of bona-lide Volunteers of England , Ireland , Scotland , and VVales for the National Challenge Trophy vvill be shot at the Darnley Range , Glasgow , and not at Bisley on the 17 th June . The match was instituted in 1 S 64 , and has been won 15 times by Scotland and i . | times by England .

A billiard match between John Roberts and C . Dawsonof Hudderslield , for £ 1000 a s"l - '" which the former cjncedes a start of 9000 out of 24 , 000 , vvas commenced at the Egyptian Hall , Piccadilly , on Saturday last , and has been continued every afternoon and evening since . As usual , the Volunteers turned out in considerable numbers during the recent holiday , and exhibited their proliciency in route marching , garrison duty , or manuuvres in the field . The 2 nd Middlesex Artillery , under Colonel Pearson , visited Sheerness , and vvere quartered in Grain Fort . The Hampshire Volunteers went in f

artillery , and engineers , being about 1200 strong . At East ' bourne there was a battle , in which the Surrey and many Metropolitan corps took part , the London Scottish , the Artists , and the Oueen's Westminster being in great force . There vvas also a big field day in the neighbourhood of Canterbury , while in other parts of the country a good d al of useful work vvas got through .

The Empress Frederick of Germany who , on leaving Buckingham Palace , went on a visit to the Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein , at Cumberland Lodge , Windsor , left the latter place for London en route for the Continent . She vvas accompanied bv the Prince and Princess Christian and their daughter , the Princess Victoria , and on reaching Paddington the party drove to Marlboiough

House , where they lunched with the Prince of Wales , who had invited the Duke and Duchess of Teck , the Princess May and Prince Alexander ol Teck and others to meet her Imperial Majesty . D ., vvill preside at the festival dinner of the Newsvendors' Benevolent and Provident Institution , to be held at the Hotel Metropole , on Friday , the 26 th May next .

Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise of Wales , Duchess of Fife , gave birth to a daughter on Monday afternoon , the 3 rd inst . Bio . the Duke of Fife vvas present on the occasion , and the Home Secretary , by command of her Majesty , was in attendance . The duchess and infant are going on favourably .

Sir John Gilbert ' s gift of pictures will not be confined to the Corporation of London , but vvill be made to the art galleries at Manchester and Liverpool as well , and it has already been resolved by the Council of the latter city to present a vote of thanks , engrossed on vellum , to the •renerous donor .

At a meeting of the Prince Edwin Lodge , No . 12 S , held at the Bridge Inn , Elton , on Wednesday , the 2 Sth ult ., an interesting event took place in the presentation of two addresses to Bro . Samuel Wood , P . M ., and Richard Robinson , P . M ., commemorating their jubilee as Past Masters , and recording their long and honourable connection vvith the lodge .

Bro . the Right Hon . Sir James Fergusson , Bart ., M . P ., and Mrs . Charles Hugh Hoare were married at St . Paul ' s Church , Knightsbridge , on Wednesday . After the ceremony , the wedding party proceeded to thebride ' s residence in Eaton-place for breakfast , and in the afternoon Bro . Sir James and Lady Fergusson left for Balbey , one of the bridegroom's places in Ayrshire .

Colonel David Gamble , C . B ., an Alderman of St . Helens , has presented to the town a plot of ground 7 i 5 , ooo _ square yards , together vvith a sum of £ 20 , 000 for the erection of a central library and reading room and a school for technical education and manual instruction . The letter conveying t \ ie announcement of the gift vvas read at the meeting ot the St . Helens Town Council on Wednesday , when a hearty vote of thanks vvas unanimously passed to Col . Gamble .

The Prince of VVales , vvho has recently been the guest of Bro . Lord and Lady Brooke at Easton Lodge , Dunmow , visited Lord and Lady Rookwood at Down Hall , near Harlow , on Monday . His Royal Highness , as a member of the Royal Commission on the Aged Poor , also took the

opportunity of visiting the Dunmow Workhouse , going carefully over every department of the building , including the infirmary and casual wards , and inquiring into the bedding , clothing , and dietary . On leaving , the P . ince wrote in the Visitors' Book that he had " visited this union with great interest , and found everything in excellent order . "

VVe regret to record an accident of a somewhat serious nature which happened last week to the J . VV . of the Eldon Lodge No . 1755 , Somersetshire Province , The officer in question is Bro . Sergeant-Major Hazell , R . A ., Instructor to Xo . 10 Company , 1 st G . A . V ., Portishead , who vvas on the

cliffs below his residence , when he fell over . He was badl y bruised and lost a quantity of blood , but fortunately no bones were broken . Our brother is not only much respected in the Craft , but his genial good nature is generally appreciated in the town , and everyone hopes for his early

recovery . The Christ's Hospital boys paid their annual visit to the Mansion House on Tuesday , when they received their usual gifts of newly-coined money , the 13 Grecians receiving each £ 1 is ., the eight junior Grecians 10 s . Gd ., the 49 monitors 2 s . Gd ., and 5 G 5 boys one shilling . After having

been regaled with buns and champagne cup or lemonade , they marched back to their school and attended Divine service in Christ Church , Newgate-street , when the Spital Sermon was preached by the Bishop of London , liro . The funeral of Bro . William Ormson , of the Uxbridge Hotel , llednesford , took place on the 28 th ult ., and was attended by several brethren , Bro . Ormson being a Past Master of the Kugelcy Lodge . The service vvas conducted by Prebendary Greir , and the bearers were Bros . Coltman , VVcbster , Blagg , Douglas ( Rugeley Lodge ) , Haynes

( . Lichfield ) , and j . W . Roach ( Earl of Shrewsbury Lodge ) . Uro . Ormson died suddenly , having reached the age of Gij , I le had been a member of the Board of Guardians of the Cannock I ' nion for many years , and was nominated for the ensuing election . On the day of his death he nominated two other Guardians for the llednesford Waul lor reelection .

Owing lo the exceptionally fine vveatner vvhich prevailed during the Easter Holidays , thc resorts of pleasure in London and its environs , and the usual holiday resorts in the country and by the seaside were thronged vvith visitors . On Easter Monday the Crystal Palace was visited by npwards ol 7 G , rtv . v persons , Vive ' / . oological Gardens , Regent's Park , by over 30 , 000 , the State Apartments at

The lower of London , Madame Tussaud ' s , and other places vvere also crowded , while the railway companies , but especially the Great Western , the South-Kastern , and the Midland , did an immense passenger traffic , particularly on Easter Monday .

At the last meeting of the Greenwich Vestry Bro . Dr Ralph Gooding , P . G . D ., vvas unanimously elected Church ! warden of Greenwich and a Commissioner of the Green vvich Public Baths . Bro . Chas . Driver vvas installed as Deputy W . M . of the Grand Master ' s Lodge of Mark Master Masons on Wednesday last , and appointed Bros . Gordon Miller and Frank Richardson as S . W . and J . W . respectively .

In the little parish churchyard of Llantechell , near Anglesey , on Thursday , the 30 th ult ., vvere interred the remains of the late Bro . J . J . Sherlock , of Tregela , the I . P . M . of the St . Eleth Lodge , Amlwch . The deceased vvho vvas in his 43 rd year , was well known throughout Anglesey , his kindly and benevolent disposition having won for him a large circle of friends and admirers .

On Friday , the 17 th ult ., the remains of the late Bro Robert Burnett , 13 SS , who died at his residence , in ' Sydenham Hill , Bristol , were interred at Arno ' s Vale Cemetery . As the deceased vvas for many years a prominent member of our Order , a number of brethren attended the funeral as a mark of respect to his memory . There vvas a large number present from the Canynge Lodge , No . 13 SS , and the Beaufort Royal Arch Chapter .

FUXKRM . Ol * THE DUKEOK BEDFORD . —The body was taken from Chesham-place , on Monday evening , in charge of Mr . Wing , the family solicitor , and Bro . Perryman , the undertaker , and deposited in the mausoleum chapel for the night , and vvas removed into the chancel of Chenies Church

just previous to the funeral . Service at 3 . 15 p . m . on Tuesday . The mourning party travelled by special train to Rickmansworth , where the carriages met , and conveyed them to Chenies , returning to London immediately after the funeral . The service was conducted b y the Hector ol Woburn , assisted by the Vicar of Chenies .

The "Literary Ladies , " vvho for the past three years have dined together , vvill meet for the next of their gatherings under the equally alliterative designation of the " Women Writers . " The festival will take place on Wednesday , May 31 st , at the Criterion , and vvill be under

a committee of management , vvhich includes Mrs . Molesworth , Mrs . L . T . Meade , Mrs . E . Robins Pennell , Mrs , William Sharp , Mrs . Graham R . Tomson , and Miss Clementina Black , while Miss Honor Morten fulfils the duties of honorary Secretary .

Freemasons , and especially those brethren vvho practice their Craft north of the Tweed , will find much interesting matter in the " History of Freemasonry in the Provinces of Roxburgh , Peebles , and Selkirk Shires" ( George Kenning ) , vvhich the industry and research of Mr . W . Fred Vernon has just brought forth . In this volume are

contained many notable records of lodge work , dating back more than two centuries ; in a word , the author ' s chapters throw a most valuable light upon Scotch Masonic doings in the past . No " Brother " can well take up this " History " without happening upon something that will both inform and interest him . —Daily Telegraph .

"Mallett in the Glasgow Evening News gives the following particulars of the new Masonic Temple it lias been decided to erect in Hope-street : The ground purchased is bounded on the east by a lane west of Hopestreet , and on the west by Wellington-street . The frontage is to West Regent-street , and this portion of the building

when erected will , while forming an entrance to the halls , be let as offices . The large hall , measuring 6 4 feet in length , vvill run from east to west , and be capable of seating about 500 . The upper storeys will form the lodge rooms , adjacents , store rooms , & c . The articles are being prepared by Bra . J . Lord Carrington , thc Lord Chamberlain , visited the Imperial Institute on Thursday afternoon , with reference to the arrangements which are being made for the reception of the Oueen and Koyal Family upon the opening of the building ' by ber Majesty on the 10 th of next month . The piepaiudons 111 the Great Hall , where the imposing ceremony is to take place , are progressing favourably . A

commodious dais is being erected at the north end of the apartment , upon vvhich a State chair will be provided for the Queen , Hanked by other chairs for members of the Royal Family . On each side of the hall tiers of seats have been constructed for the reception of the 2000 persons privileged to be present . An official " General Outline of the Ceremonial " has been printed , and is substantially the same as the programme vvhich has already been published . It is

stated that specially-invited guests and fellows will take their places from 10 . 30 to 11 . 45 a . m . The Prince of VVales vvill arrive at 12 o ' clock . The other members of the Royal Family vvill come separately , and be received by his Koyal I lighness , the President , and the Executive Council . At a quarter-past 12 o ' clock a procession of the Koyal family will be formed and conducted from the Council Chamber through the vestibule to the dais in the Great Hall .

As usual , the Volunteers turned out in considerable numbers during the recent holiday , and exhibited their proliciency in route marching , garrison duty , or manuuvres in the field . The Empress Frederick of Germany who , on leaving Buckingham Palace , went on a visit to the Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein , at Cumberland Lodge , Windsor , left the latter place for London en route for the Continent . Bio . the Duke of Fife vvas present on the occasion , and the Home Secretary , by command of her Majesty , was in attendance . The duchess and infant are going on favourably .

Sir John Gilbert ' s gift of pictures will not be confined to the Corporation of London , but vvill be made to the art galleries at Manchester and Liverpool as well , and it has already been resolved by the Council of the latter city to present a vote of thanks , engrossed on vellum , to the •renerous donor .

Bro . the Right Hon . Sir James Fergusson , Bart ., M . P ., and Mrs . Charles Hugh Hoare were married at St . Paul ' s Church , Knightsbridge , on Wednesday . opportunity of visiting the Dunmow Workhouse , going carefully over every department of the building , including the infirmary and casual wards , and inquiring into the bedding , clothing , and dietary . In the little parish churchyard of Llantechell , near Anglesey , on Thursday , the 30 th ult ., vvere interred the remains of the late Bro . J . J . Sherlock , of Tregela , the I . P . M . of the St . Eleth Lodge , Amlwch . The deceased vvho vvas in his 43 rd year , was well known throughout Anglesey , his kindly and benevolent disposition having won for him a large circle of friends and admirers .

On Friday , the 17 th ult ., the remains of the late Bro Robert Burnett , 13 SS , who died at his residence , in ' Sydenham Hill , Bristol , were interred at Arno ' s Vale Cemetery . As the deceased vvas for many years a prominent member of our Order , a number of brethren attended the funeral as a mark of respect to his memory . The frontage is to West Regent-street , and this portion of the building

Lord Carrington , thc Lord Chamberlain , visited the Imperial Institute on Thursday afternoon , with reference to the arrangements which are being made for the reception of the Oueen and Koyal Family upon the opening of the building ' by ber Majesty on the 10 th of next month . The piepaiudons 111 the Great Hall , where the imposing ceremony is to take place , are progressing favourably . A

commodious dais is being erected at the north end of the apartment , upon vvhich a State chair will be provided for the Queen , Hanked by other chairs for members of the Royal Family . On each side of the hall tiers of seats have been constructed for the reception of the 2000 persons privileged to be present . An official " General Outline of the Ceremonial " has been printed , and is substantially the same as the programme vvhich has already been published . It is
