Ye Antiente Fraternitie Of Ye Rahere Almoners.
YE ANTIENTE FRATERNITIE OF YE RAHERE ALMONERS .
The Charitable Sociely bearing the above quaint appellation , and which is a modern resuscitation of the almonry formed in the 12 th century , by Prior Rahere , in the parish of St . Bartholoniew-the-great , London , held its third anniversary meeting on Thursday evening , the 23 rd ult ., at the school rooms atlaclied to St .
Bartholomew-the-Great , Smithfield , the use of which had been kindly placed at the disposal of the Society by the late rector , the Rev . J . Abbiss . "Ye Rahere Almoners" owes its existence , as a modern society , to the initiative of a well-known member of our Masonic Craft , Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., P . Z ., whose happy inspiration has received most cordial support , as well from brother Masons as from gentlemen of influence connected with the district
which is the scene of its operations . Foremost amongst the earnest workers on behalf of this Institution is Mr . Thomas Sangster , of Long-lane . Smithfield , upon whom , as its Grand Recorder , the secretarial business devolves , merits especial mention , as it is chiefly through his indefatigable exertions that its success has been secured . Another Freemason , Bro . Joseph Young , holds the third permanent office , tnat of Grand Chancellor ( or Treasurer ) ,
and has been prominent in respect of good and zealous service . For the first time , however , since the society was instituted a Freemason is now the presiding officer , Bro . A . C . Morton , C . C ., having been , as will be noticed in the fo'lowing report , unanimously elected to the position of Grand Prior . The Chapter General , which comprises the officers of the Grand Council and the general body of subscribers , was
numerously attended , and busine . s was opened by the Grand Prior , Frater Raymond Griffiths , at the appointed hour . The Auditors' report was read and received , and gave general satisfaction . It referred to the great advantage derived at the annual festival held at Cannon-street Hotel on the 23 rd October last , by ( he support of the late Lord Mayor ( tiro . Sir John Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., G . J . W . ) , as Chairman ; of the Sheriffs of London , Bios . Alderman De
Reyser and Joseph Savory , who supported him , and ol other members of the corporation who were then present . Both financially and reputably this Fesiival was a great success . The Chapter General then proceeded to decide on suggestions made for revision of the rules rendered necessary by practical results of working during the past three years , and these were generally adopted . The election of officers of the Grand Council for thr >
ensuing year was then proceeded wiih , and resulled as follows : Fratres A . C . Morton , Most Worth y Grand Prior ; Raymond Griffiths , Most Worthy Past Grand Prior ; J . Hollinghurst ( Churchwarden ) , Most'Worthy Past Grand frior ; James Stevens , Very Worihy Grand Counsellor * ; Horatio Owen , Very Worthy Grand Hospitaller *; Thomas Sangster , Very Worthy Grand Recordei *; Joseph Young , Very Worthy Grand Chancellor *; Joseph Williams ,
Worthy Sub-Prior ; Joseph Balderson , Worthy Remembrancer * ; Harry Bennett , Worth y Warden" ; A . E . brndin , Worthy Proctor ; Capt . C . Robertson , Worthy Chief Almoner ; Joseph Covington , Worthy Assistant Almoner ; C . G . Hofman , Worthy Bursar ; J . VV . Higgjns , Worthy Warder ; James Loaring ( Urganist of St . Sepulchre ' s ) , Grand Minstrel ; VV . Brew , Grand Chamberlain ; and J . H . Utting , Grand Deacon .
The auditor ' s report and balance-sheet , with an address and the list of officers for the ensuing year and donors and subscribers , was ordered to be printed for general circulation , and the thanks of the meeting having been given to Frater Past Grand Prior Raymond Griffiths , Chapter General was closed , and the fratres adjourned to the Barley Mow Tavern , Long-lane , where a substantial repast was provided for them by Frater Deverall . The
newly-elected Grand Prior , Frater A . C . Morton , presided , and , in addition to those already named , Fratres J . Lidiard , E . Homer , Sargeant , J . Smith , T . Emdin , H . R . Johnson , and others were present . After grace , the usual loyal toasts were duly honoured . The GRAND PRIOR , in a brilliant speech , proposed "Success to ye Antiente Fraternitie of ye Rahere Almoners , " referring to the resuscitation of the
ancient almonry under its modern title , and in accordance with the spirit of the present age . He also referred to the capital report and balance-sheet which had been presented , which was , if anything , more favourable than that of last year . He concluded by coupling with the toast the name of Frater James Stevens , the Worthy Grand Counsellor , with whom lay the honour of having originated the resuscitation of the ancient almonry .
The toast was enthusiastically received and Frater STEVENS responded , expressing the great pleasure which , not only himself , but all associated with the Fraternilie , must of necessity feel in witnessing the successful results of their joint efforts . The alms chest was then passed round , the amount collected being £ 1 10 s . 6 d . Frater J . V LIDIARD ( Churchwarden of Clapham )
proposed " 1 he Health of the Most Worth y Grand Prior , Frater Morton , " in terms of high appreciation and ability , in respect of the several public services rendered by him in connection with important offices he had occupied as his predecessor in the cliurcliwardenshi p , and on the vestry and Board of Works for the locality in which they both resided . The GRAND PRIOR responded in suitable terms .
Amongst several other toasts , which included " The Past Grand Priors , Fratres Holhngshurst and Griffiths , " "The Grand Chancellor , Frater Vnung , " and "The Stewards , ' that of "The Very Worthy Grand Recorder , Frater Thoma Sangster , " proposed by Frater Stevens , being received with much enthusiasm . Frater SANGSTER , who was loudly called for , responded in brief termsstating that his thanks could be best
ex-, pressed by " deeds , not words , " and a continuance of all those good services which those present so heartily acknowledged . The evening ' s proceedings were enlivened by abundant harmony under the direction of Grand Minstrel Frater Loaring , and terminated at a reasonable hour , amidst
mutual expressions of congratulation on a most successful gathering . We were given to understand that the annua ) festival of this Society will be held in October . At present , however , the date , place of meeting , and other arrangements are not settled . From onr exp < runce of past entertainments given by " Ye Antiente Fraternitie , " we lo "" forward lo a gathering of no small importance .
