THE THEATRES .
Mrs . Conover is about to try her luck again at the Olympic Theatre , with a new drama by Mr . Robert Buchanan and Miss Harriet Jay , called " Alone in London . " Miss Amy Roselle , Miss Jay , Mr . Herbert Standing , and Mr . Gilbert Farquhar will be in the cast .
* * * Mr . John Hollingshead has succeeded in getting the Lord Chamberlain—R . W . the Deputy Grand Master the Earl of Lathom—to withdraw the restriction on the opening of theatres under his jurisdiction on Ash Wednesday . It is not the principals , but the underpaid supers ,
& c , who will appreciate this alteration . The Gaiety will have a new burlesque by Messrs . Yardley and Stephens at Christmas , from the story of Harrison Ainsworth ' s "Jack Sheppard . " Miss Farren will be the chief in the company , as of yore . Bro . Edward Terry will not rejoin at Christmas , as his wont , but intends to continue his provincial tour .
* * Bro . G . R . Sims underwent a surgical operation last week for an affection in the jaw , and is now at Brighton recovering his health , which of late has been very unsatisfactory . # # #
The "Colleen Bawn " is in rehearsal at the Adelphi , and may be expected to be produced there in a few weeks . # * * The Opera Comique is likely to be reopened soon with a new comic opera . We hope so , for it is a very comfortable theatre for its audience .
" Loose Tiles " is still running merrily along at the Vaudeville . A somewhat new cast has been introduced , and we think the change altogether for the better . On the night of our second visit the theatre was quite filled , and the laughter as great as ever . Mr . T . Thorne is still the nervous , retiring Bob Twetters , and makes the house ringwith his drollery . Miss Sophie Larkin succeeds Miss
Victor as Mary Snatters , and considerably improves the part , without burlesquing it . Her little by-play with Mr . Thorne is really funny as the elderly spinster trying to hook any man for a husband . Bro . Lestocq , as Mr . Towser , is another good addition to the company . Mr . Yorke Stephens' successor , Mr . Gardiner , gives us a different rendering of the part of Heathcote ; but we do not think it is the less attractive ; and if we mention Miss Kate Rorke
last , it is not because we think her least . To any stage this young lady is a decided acquisition ; we cannot conceive failure in any character she undertakes to pourtray . We do not often make comparisons ; but when noticing the piece on its production , we mentioned Miss Cissy Grahame ' s as the worst played part . Miss Kate Rorke , as Laura Myrtle , demands the attention of her audience ; she looks , as she always does , pretty , dresses neatly , and speaks
clearly , and with expression , and wins no little share of the applause . The same author , Mr . Hurst , has written a new work , entitled " Nearly Severed . " There is nothing very clever in it ; but the company , consisting of Mr . Gardiner , Bro . Lestocq , Miss Giffard , and Miss Kate Rorke , make it go well as a first piece . Bro , Lestocq and Miss Giffard are excellent in their respective parts , and give the Yorkshire
dialect to perfection . Miss Rorke plays the part of the governess with the intelligence and pleasing manner which seem so natural to her , and it is no wonder that those in front of the stage show their great appreciation of her vivacious ways . We hope to see her create a part in the new play already in reheaisal at the Vaudeville , and so add to the good name she has made for herself wherever she has been .

in question is the report " in extenso " of a Committee of 11 members of the lodge referred to , the most prominent being Bros . W . Pringle , who was elected D . G . Master of the Prov . Keystone , is in high glee at the discovery , and very naturally so , as the document is a further link in the evidence in support of the earliest doings of the Craft in the capital of Pennsylvania . A certified copy of the report , and a statement in support of its authenticity , were presented to the Grand Lodge .
