MASONIC EXCHANGE COLUMN . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , I think Bro . George Taylo r ' s suggestion , which I am glad to see you have at once thoroughly appreciated , will prove a source of much interest to your readers . I can testify to the want of such a column , and it will certainly have my cordial support . The model of the " Oueen "
newspaper might be tried , but I know no one more able to "devise the p lan " than my esteemed friend , Bro . Taylor , Besides tending to spread those studies with which it will be more particularly connected , I trust it may be the means also of adding materially to your subscription list . —lam , dear Sir and Brother , yours truly and fraternally , J . RAMSDEN RILEY . Bradford , October sth .
To the hdttor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , I heartily support Bro . G . Taylor ' s suggesstion for a Masonic Exchange ( and Sale ) Column , for I consider it would be a most useful medium for Masonic students to
obtain books wanted , and to move off duplicates . A cost of sixpence for each article , exclusive of the address ( payment being on such lists being forwarded ) , would doubtless cover the cost of the printing , and I feel assured that the Freemason would increase its usefulness thereby . —Yours fraternally , W . J . HUGHAN .
SUBSCRIPTIONS OF LODGES . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Will you kindly answer the following question : — In making bye-laws , who has the inherent power to fix the
amount of subscription payable by members of a lodge ? and is not the following bye-law contrary to the spirit of the Constitutions ( see 16 3 ) : — " That these bye-laws shall be transcribed in a book , and that the same shall be signed by every member of the lodge , so far as can conveniently be done ? " Your answer , through the Freemason , will be esteemed . A SUBSCRIBER . [ The lodge itself has the power to fix the amount of subscription , and although ; the signature of a member to the bye-laws is not required by the Constitutions , wc can see no objection to the practice , which is very general . —ED . THE A . & A . S . RITE IN GERMANY . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , In reply to the inquiry in your issue of the igth Sept . as to the Scottish Rite and the railing , I can inform you that the Scottish Rite does not exist in Germany . The Grand Lodge of the Three Globes , at Berlin , works the " General Old Scotch Lodge " and " The Inner Orient " 0
( German-Altschottische Loge ) degrees , 4 to f , whereof I am a member . In front of the Oriental chair there is not placed a railing , made of metal faced with gems , and , of . course , it cannot have cost 80 , 000 dollars . Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany is Protector of ah German lodges , but G . M . of none . In consequence of his great age , he has very seldom visited any lodges during the last ten years . —Fraternally yours , ADOLF OVERD 1 ECK . Uelzen , Hanover , September 27 th .
