short of his feelings , and every time he pmncd it to his breast the present occasion would come vividly before him . He felt extremely grateful for the appreciation which the brethren had shown for his services ; he assured them he had tried his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge , and they were aware that during his tenure of office , when there was no business on the circular he had created some

by delivering the tracing board lectures , and trying by such means to engraft on the minds of the brethren that there was something more in Freemasonry than mere feasting . In referring to the satisfactory balance sheet , Uro . Whittakcr remarked that the clearing off of the debt which hung over thc lodge when he was installed W . M ., was only achieved by perseverance and to valuable assistance rendered him by the 'Treasurer , Bro . Wm . Bostock ,

and Secretary , Bro . A . T . Forrest ; intact , the latter brother deserved special mention for his indefatigable exertions , having never once left undone any portion of his duties , and had it not been for these two highly esteemed brethren he could never have brought about such a pleasing result ; and , in conclusion , he would say that all he had done had been for his love of Freemasonry and thc welfare of the Avon Lodge , and for what they had been pleased to present him with , he asked them to accept thc thanks of one of

their most humble servants . Bro . S . D . McKcllen next proposed " The Health of thc Visiting Brethren" in his usual forcible style , which was responded to by several of their number , after which thc toasts of "The Masonic Charities , " "The newly invested Officers & c . " were given , and a pleasurable evening was brought to a close at eleven o'clock .

of the Lecture . Bros . Cohen and Taylor respectively worked the Second and Third Sections , the brethren in thc last two cases assisting . Bro . II . Marks , 1349 , was duly elected a member of the lodge ; and a vote of condolence was passed in sympathy with Bro . II . J . Phillips , l . P . M . 205 , upon the loss of his mother , Bro . Stephens being requested to communicate the same . Uro . Pringle was elected W . M . for next meeting , and lodge closed .

DORIC LODGE ( No 933 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held as usual at Bro . J . Clayton's , the Duke's Head , 79 Whitechapcl-road , on the 3 rd inst . Bro . J . R . Macgregor , W . M . ; W . Richardson , S . W . ; C . II . Bardouleau , J . W . ; J . R . Shingticld , S . D . ; W . Musto , P . M ., Sec ; ' B . Cundick , P . M ., Preceptor ; Sicgcnberg . I . G . ; J . West , D . Moss , Benjamin Stephens and others . Lodge was opened with all due formalities , and the ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Darnell candidate .

'The W . M ., worked the First , Second and llurd , and Uro . Moss the Fourth Sections of the Lectures , assisted by thc brethren . Bro . Richardson was elected W . M . for the next meeting ; and an Audit Committee , consisting of Bros . Musto , jun ., Bardouleau and West , was elected to report on the lodge finances at the ensuing meeting . A cordial vote of thanks was accorded Uro . Macgregor for his working in the chair for the first time in the lodge . All business being ended , lodge was closed and thelbrethren adjourned .

duly opened and thc minutes read and confirmed . The initiation ceremony was worked , Uro . Hubbcrt being candidate . Lodge was next opened up for Bro . Hubbcrt to be interrogated and entrusted , and lodge was advanced , and the ceremony of raising efficiently worked , the same brother acting as candidate . Lodge having been closed down , Bro . A . Jones was elected W . M . for the next meeting , when we trust he will have a good attendance . A sum of £ z « .

was voted from lodge funds upon thc list of W . Bro . R . Sturtevant , who represents the Burdett Coutts Lodge at the forthcoming festival of the Girls' School . This concluded the business , and lodge was closed and adjourned to thc following Wednesday evening . 'The lodge is easy of access both by rail and tram , and being under Uro . Past Master Musto ' s Preccptorship , brethren seeking Masonic instruction would attend here with advantage .

EARL OF ZETLAND LODGE ( No . 13 ( 1 . 1 ) . — Despite the heavy fog which visited the whole of London on Saturday last , the members of the above lodge met at Bro . Richardson ' s , the Royal Edward , Mare-street , Hackney . Lodge was opened by Bro . W . Gray , W . M ., who was supported by Bros . A . Wright , P . M ., as S . W . ; G . Pope ,

J . W . ; W . Fieldwick , P . M ., Preceptor ; Ernest Wright , P . M ., Secretary ; F . Crook , D . ; Darnell , ' . C ; Stephens , and others . Lodge having been duly opened , the minutes were submitted and confirmed . 'The ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . li . Wright candidate . The First Section of thc Lecture was worked by Bro . Fieldwick and thc

brethren . It being the first time that Hro . W . Gray had occupied thc chair , a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to him for his able working . Bro . Wright , P . M ., was duly elected W . M . for thc nth inst ., and lodge was closed and adjourned until that date ; a good evening ' s working having been obtained notwithstanding- the unfavourable weather .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held at Masons' Hall Tavern , Masons' Avenue , Basinghall street , E . C , on Thursday , the 20 th ult ., when there was a good muster of brethren , amongst whom were Bros . G . W . Iilackie , P . M . 142 'i , acting as W . M . ; II . II . Room , S . W . ; II . B . The lodge was ojiened in due form at 0 . 30 p . m ., and thc ceremony ot initiation rehearsed b y Uro . Iilackie , Bro . Lodge acting as candidate . The lodge was then called off for refreshment . During the interval a ballot was taken for a Life Governorship of one of the Charities , which fell

to the lot of Bro . Kceble , J . W . 142 O , after which the brethren adjourned to a room below , where tables were laid for a supper , which was served up in a very satisfactory manner by Bro , Wood . After justice had been done to the repast the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , interspersed with songs . The supper table was ably presided over by Bro . C Taylor , W . M . i . | - 'd , and the brethren separated about 10 . 30 , having spent a pleasant evening .

TREDEGAR LODGE ( No . i ( . _ ' . s ) . —At the last regular meeting , at Bro . Yates ' s , the Royal , Mile End-road , there were present Bros . Scheerboom , W . M . ; C Kendall , S . W . ; Dee-son , J . W . ; Maud , S . I ) . ; II . Clark , J . D . ; M . Isaacs , I . G . ; T . J . Barnes , P . M ., Treas . ; B . Stewart , Hon . Sec . ; F . Robinson , Job , Hubbcrt , and Iyer . After necessary formalities had been complied with , the

lodge was advanced , and liro . Isaacs was interrogated and entrusted . Lodge was opened up , and the ceremony of raising was capitally worked , Bro . Iyer being candidate . Bro . Job worked the Second Section of the Lecture , assisted by Bro . Stewart . Lodge was closed down in ancient form , and Bro . C Kendall , l . P . M . of the mother lodge , was elected W . M . for the next meeting . Lodge was formally closed .

LANGTON LODGE ( No . 1 07 . 1 ) . —The weekl y meeting of this lodge of instruction was held on Thursday , the 2 nd inst ., at the Mansion House Station Restaurant , Oueen Victoria-street , E . C , the offices being filled as follows : Bros . Bui ' -, W . M . ; Marshall , S . W . ; Vialts , J . W . ; Shaw , S . D . ; Chubb , J . D . ; Saunders , I . G . ; and Sudlotv , Preceptor ; Bros . 'The lodge having been opened in the First Degree , and thc minutes read and confirmed , the lodge was opened up to the 'Third Degree , and resumed in the Second , Bro . Money acting as candidate , and after answering the usual questions , the lodge was resumed in the Third Degree , and the candidate raised to the Degree of M . M . After a call off , the lodge resumed in the First Degree . I Bro . Sudlow

, Preceptor , assisted by Uro . Tanqueray , worked the Sixth Section of the First Lecture , and also the First Section of the First Lecture , assisted by thc brethren , liro . Marshall was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing meeting , and gave notice that the ceremony would be the First Degree , the Fourth Section of the Second Lecture , and the First Section of the Third Lecture ; after which the lodge was closed .

ST . JAMES'S CHAPTER ( No . 2 ) . —This distinguished chapter held its usual meeting on 'Thursday , the 2 nd inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , under the presidency of Comp . Rev . A . F . A . Woodford , P . G . S ., as M . E . Z . ' The normal business of the chapter was gone through , and Uro . Tressillian Skipp , of No . 2 , was exalted to the Supreme Degree of a Royal Arch Mason by the M . E . / .., assisted by M . E . Comps . Letchworth , as II ., and Captain Davis , as J . The election of Principals and officers then took place for

the current year , who will be installed and invested at the next chapter . The companions adjourned to a very agreeable and pleasant banquet . The usual loyal and Masonic toastswere given and received with that heartiness and thoroughness which r . lways characterises thc St . James ' s Chapter ; and the valuable services of the Grand Treasurer as 'Treasurer of the chapter and a member for twenty-five years , and Comp . Sampson Peirce , as Scribe E ., were . speciall y dwelt upon and warmly acknowledged .

M . E . Comp . R . F . Gould returned thanks in an effective speech for " 'The Grand Chapter ; " and Comp . Dr . Ramsay for "The Visitors . " After a very enjoyable evening and much agreeable sociality , thc companions separated at an early hour .

DOMATIC CHAPTER ( No . 177 ) . —This old and distinguished chapter met on the 20 th ult . for thc dispatch of business . Among those in attendance were Comps . Lawrence , M . E . Z . ; Briggs , 1 L ; Harrison , J . ; Cottebrune . P . Z ., S . E . ; Buss , ' P . G . S . B ., Treasurer ; Maclean , S . N . j Not ™ , P . S ; Morrison and Webb , Assistants ; George Everett , LP . / .. ; T . Cubitt , P . / ..

Hill , P . Z . ; and Vary , Janitor . 'The visitors were Comps . Gompertz , P . Z . 141 ; T . C . Walls , P . P . G . D . C . Middx . ; and Yon ge , I 2 if \ 'The minutes of the previous meeting having been rend and confirmed , three brethren were duly exalted to the Supreme Degree of the R . A . 'The election of officers for the year ensuing then took jilace with the following result : Comp . Briggs , M . E . Z . ; Harrison , H . ;

Maclean , J . ; Cottebrune , S . E . ; Webb , S . N . ; Buss , Ireasurer ; Noton , P . S . ; and Yerry , janitor . Upon the motion of Ex . Comp . Buss , a Past Principal ' s jewel was unanimously voted to the outgoing M . E . Z . 'The chapter was shortly afterwards closed , and the companions adjourned ( o the banquet , which was well served . The cloth having been removed , the usual routine of

toasts followed , but in consequence of the lateness of thc hour they were but briefly proposed and responded to . Comp . Buss , as usual , made a short but extremel y interesting speech in response to " Thc Health of the Grand Officers . " "The Health of the M . li ' . Z . " was given in well chosen terms by the I . P . Z ., and Comp . Laurence

having rejilied , then gave " The Exaltccs . " This important toast having been enthusiastically drunk , the newlyexalted companions suitably acknowledged the compliment . The toast of "The Visitors " followed . This pledge was acknowledged by Comjis . Yongc and Walls . "The Past Principals" came next , coupled with the name of thc l . P . ii .

Comp . Everett , 111 reply , after dilating upon the subject toast , said that , although he had but just recover ; d from a severe attack of indisposition , yet he felt that it was his duty at all hazards to be present that evening , as it was his last appearance in the character of Immediate Past Principal , and he wished to show the companions that his interest in the chapter was unabated , and that he was ready to perform

the duties of the chair , should that necessity had arisen . "Tlie Treasurer and S . E . ' followed . Ill giving this toast the- M . E . Z . expressed his personal obligations to the companions occupying those important positions for the great attention they gave to the duties of their rcsjiective oflices , and the matured advice that they were at all times ready to give to any young member of the chapter

. This pledge having been warmly received , Comjis . Uuss and Cottebrune replied . Comp . Uuss having expressed his acknowledgment in brief terms , said lie left the most hard-wot king member of the whole community to speak for himself . Comp . Cottebrune , in a modest speech , said that what

he did for the chapter was a labour of love . I le had been connected so many years with the Domatic that nothing afforded him greater pleasure than to contribute his Masonic knowledge , humble though it might be , to any member desiring the same . 'The toast of " 'The Ollicers , " coupled with thc names of Comps . Norton and Webb , terminated thc jiroceedings .

BUXTON .-Chapter of St . Ann ( No . 1235 ) . — The annua ! installation meeting of this chapter wa ' s " held in the Court House on Thursday , thc 2 nd inst . 'The chapter was opened at 12 . 30 by Comps . J . II . Lawson , / .. ; P . Le Gros , II . ; and Wm . Boiighen , ) . 'There were also present Comps . J . Taylor . P . Z . ; li ! C Milligan , P . He felt extremely grateful for the appreciation which the brethren had shown for his services ; he assured them he had tried his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge , and they were aware that during his tenure of office , when there was no business on the circular he had created some

by delivering the tracing board lectures , and trying by such means to engraft on the minds of the brethren that there was something more in Freemasonry than mere feasting . In referring to the satisfactory balance sheet , Uro . Whittakcr remarked that the clearing off of the debt which hung over thc lodge when he was installed W . M ., was only achieved by perseverance and to valuable assistance rendered him by the 'Treasurer , Bro . Wm . Bostock ,

and Secretary , Bro . A . T . Forrest ; intact , the latter brother deserved special mention for his indefatigable exertions , having never once left undone any portion of his duties , and had it not been for these two highly esteemed brethren he could never have brought about such a pleasing result ; and , in conclusion , he would say that all he had done had been for his love of Freemasonry and thc welfare of the Avon Lodge , and for what they had been pleased to present him with , he asked them to accept thc thanks of one of

The election of Principals and officers then took place for

the current year , who will be installed and invested at the next chapter . The companions adjourned to a very agreeable and pleasant banquet . The usual loyal and Masonic toastswere given and received with that heartiness and thoroughness which r . lways characterises thc St . James ' s Chapter ; and the valuable services of the Grand Treasurer as 'Treasurer of the chapter and a member for twenty-five years , and Comp . toasts followed , but in consequence of the lateness of thc hour they were but briefly proposed and responded to . Comp . Buss , as usual , made a short but extremel y interesting speech in response to " Thc Health of the Grand Officers . " "The Health of the M . li ' . Z . " was given in well chosen terms by the I . P . Z ., and Comp . Laurence

having rejilied , then gave " The Exaltccs . " This important toast having been enthusiastically drunk , the newlyexalted companions suitably acknowledged the compliment . The toast of "The Visitors " followed . This pledge was acknowledged by Comjis . Yongc and Walls . "The Past Principals" came next , coupled with the name of thc l . P . ii .

Comp . Everett , 111 reply , after dilating upon the subject toast , said that , although he had but just recover ; d from a severe attack of indisposition , yet he felt that it was his duty at all hazards to be present that evening , as it was his last appearance in the character of Immediate Past Principal , and he wished to show the companions that his interest in the chapter was unabated , and that he was ready to perform

the duties of the chair , should that necessity had arisen . "Tlie Treasurer and S . E . ' followed . Ill giving this toast the- M . E . Z . expressed his personal obligations to the companions occupying those important positions for the great attention they gave to the duties of their rcsjiective oflices , and the matured advice that they were at all times ready to give to any young member of the chapter

. This pledge having been warmly received , Comjis . Uuss and Cottebrune replied . Comp . Uuss having expressed his acknowledgment in brief terms , said lie left the most hard-wot king member of the whole community to speak for himself . Comp . Cottebrune , in a modest speech , said that what

he did for the chapter was a labour of love . I le had been connected so many years with the Domatic that nothing afforded him greater pleasure than to contribute his Masonic knowledge , humble though it might be , to any member desiring the same . 'The toast of " 'The Ollicers , " coupled with thc names of Comps . Norton and Webb , terminated thc jiroceedings .
