APOLLO UNIVERSITY LODGE . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — Will 3-ou allow me to correct a slight mistake which occurs in your interesting " Historical Calendar " for February , in your last issue ? It is stated therein that the Apollo University Lodge was opened on February ioth .
This is not quite correct . 4 here was , it is true , an informal meeting on that day , but no W . M . had then been installed , and no ollicers had been formally appointed . This was done on February loth , ISIO , when the first regular meeting was held , and then the opening of the lodge may be more correctly said to have taken place . I am . yours fraternally , A MEMBER OF No . v-, 7-
AN APPEAL . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — May I ask you to kindly insert in your next issue the following statement of facts and appeal on behalf of a most deserving case of distress which has come under my notice as Chairman of the Charity Committee of East Lancashire ,
the particulars of which were embodied in a petition to the Grand Lodge of Benevolence , and forwarded to the Grand Secretary by me on the iCth day of December last ? The petition sets forth" i . That your petitioner ' s husband was initiated into Freemasonry in the Sutherland Lodgeof Unity , No . 4 O 0 , at Ncwcastle-under-Lyme , in the year 1 S 64 , and continued
a subscribing member thereto for fifteen years ; served the various offices therein , and was elected Worshipful Master in the years 1 S 70 , 1 S 71 , and 1 S 73 . He also joined the Sutherland Lodge , No . 451 , at llurslem , in the year 1 S 71 ; and also the Portland Lodge , No . 037 , at Stoke-on-Trent ; and was appointed Senior Grand Warden of Staffordshire in the year 1 S 7 J by the then Provincial Grand Master , the
lion , the Karl of Shrewsbury . " 2 . That he was also associated with the Staffordshire Masonic Charitable Association from its establishment in 1571 , as one of the Committee during the years 1 S 71 and 1572 , and elected Vice-President during the same year , and afterwards Secretary from 1 S 75 to 1 S 70 . " t . That he was a Life Governor of the Royal Masonic
Institution for Boys , and served Stewardships ft , r the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls in the year 1 S 74 , with a list of / . Yi ^ , and the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Freemasons in 1 S 75 , with a list of £ 102 10 s . " 4 . That your petitioner's husband was in affluent circumstances , but in the years 1 S 7 S and 1 S 70 , from speculations , he lost everything he possessed , and about sixteen
months ago lift your petitioner , and she has heard no tidings of him since , leaving your petitioner with six children , viz .: F . nnice , aged 10 years , who is in a situation ; James , 14 years , Henry , 11 years ( these two are earning small amounts in situations in Manchester ); Sydney , S years ; Edward , C , years ; and Stanley , 3 years . " 5 . That your petitioner has been located in
Manchester some time , and has no means of existence but by the casual help of a few friends . " (> . That your petitioner has not the slightest idea whether her husband is living or dead . " Under these circumstances she prays that the sympathy showed by her husband towards the distressed when he was in affluent circumstances will be reciprocated towards her . "
By the next post the petition was returned to me , accompanied by a letter , of which the following is a copy : — " Freemasons' Hall , London , W . C . " Grand Secretary ' s Ofiice , " Dec . 17 , 1 SS 1 . " Dear Sir and Brother , — " I have to acknowledge the receipt of your
communication of the !< ith inst ., and regret I cannot put the petition on the list , as the Lodge of Benevolence has no power to deal with a case of this kind . " I am , Sir and Brother , yours fraternally , "SlIADWKI . I . II . CI . ERKE , G . S . "Bro . J . L . Hine , P . P . S . G . W ., K . L ., " Chairman of the Charity Committee , E . Lane . "
I cannot refrain , therefore , from bringing this case before the notice of the Craft generally ( inasmuch as the portals of organized Masonic charity arc closed to this worse than " widow , " who , by no act of her own , is , with a large family , reduced from affluence to the lowest ebb of poverty and distress ) in the hope that an appeal to the benevolent Mason for assistance will not be in vain .
Her husband , as the petition states , held high ofiice in his province , and in his time was energetic and charitable . All the allegations contained therein are verified , and I , together with Bro . Ifuet , W . M . of the Shakespeare Lodge , No . 1009 , who well knew her husband and family in their affluent circumstances , visited her personally , and can corroborate the statement as to her present position . It is not my wish to take up any more of your valuable
space than is absolutely necessary , nor . to enlarge . upon the merits—the petition speaks for itself . Under the circumstances , I therefore appeal to the Craft generally . I-can conscientiously state that in my experience with cases of charity extending over a period of more than a quarter of a century , I never met with one more deserving of sympathy , nor one that calls more loudly for help .
Original Correspondence.
It is hoped that by this means sufficient may be raised to place her in some position by which , with her own exertions , she may be enabled to provide for herself and family . I am , dear Sir and Brother , yours faithfully ,
J . L . HINE , P . Prov . G . S . W . E . Lane , Chairman of the Charity Committee of East Lancashire . [ We do not usually allow appeals for charity , but think it right to make an exception in this case , and will call attention to the subject in our next . Ep . F . M . J
PRECEDENCE IN LODGE . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — A week or two ago I was present at the Installation meeting of a distinguished Red Apron Lodge . At the banquet , the Treasurer , who appears to be the oldest Past Master , sat on the right of the W . M ., and next to him , and
then according to their rank , several Present and Past Grand Officers . Will you kindly tell me whether this is correct , as remarks were made during the banquet about it ; and as the M . W . G . M . has lately in a circular directed attention to the proper position of Grand Ollicers it is desirable that this should he strictly conformed to . I remain , faithfully and fraternally yours , P . G . O .
A OUERY . To the Editor if the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Will you please allow some legal brother to point out how the " Book of Constitutions" deals with the following question , which appears to be of interest to the . Craft in general .
A brother who bad passed the chair left the lodge , and for some years was not a subscribing member of any lodge . He was then proposed and balloted for in the usual way as a joining member , and wished to take his place again as a P . M . This was objected to ; and at a meeting of P . M . ' s , held after some communication with the Prov . Officers , it was decided that the brother had ceased to hold the rank , and had lost the privileges of a P . M . [ for the following
reasons : — ist . He had ceased to be a subscribing member of any lodge , and therefore his name had been erased from the roll of Grand Lodge , and he could not attend the meetings of Grand Lodge ; and , 2 nd . That his position was the same as a new initiate of the same date , except that having been a Warden , he was
eligible for election to the chair . This appeared to be borne out by a letter received from the late Grand Secretary , but the subject has cropped up again , and because there is not a definite enactment in the Book of Constitutions , there is a difference of opinion which ventilation may set at rest . 1 cnrlose card , and am , yours fraternally , ENOUIRKR .
TR 1 N 1 TAU 1 AN 1 SM AND THEISTIC TEACHING . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — In an old book that was lent to me the other day , from which the front and back have been ruthlessly torn , but which purports to be " An Authentic Key to the Door
of . Freemasonry , " and to have been published when Lord Petro was Grand Master of England ( i . e . circa 171 ) 6 or 1707 ) , I find the following prayer : — ¦ "PKAVEK IN TIIK FIRST DEORI - . E . " Brethren , —Let us pray . " O Lord God , thou great and universal Mason of the
World and first Builder of man , as it were a Temple ; be with us , O Lord , as Thou has promised when two or three are gatheicd together in thy name , Thou wilt be in the midst of them . Be with us , O Lord . . and grant that this our friend may become a faithful Brother . Let Grace and Peace be multiplied unto him , through the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and grant , O
Lord , that Masonry may be blest throughout the World . . and grant that wc may be all uuited as one through our Lord Jesus Christ who liveth and reigneth for ever and ever . Amen . " I do not pay much heed to the book myself since the writer says at the conclusion : "This is the whole of Masonry in all its branches , and 1 defy any Mason to prove the
contrary . " And as he goes on to intimate that he has himself never been regularly admitted , but has surreptitiously gained the secrets of the Craft , I think that he was one of those cowans who , in the latter part of the eighteenth century , cast dishonour on the Craft . I am afraid I have taken up your time in reading this letter to no purpose , but still I trust that you will forgive Yours very faithfully and fraternally , T . WARD CHALMERS , P . M . 72 G .
THEISTIC PRINCIPLES OF FREEMASONRY . To the Editor if the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — I have been much interested in some editorial remarks which 1 find in to-day ' s issue of the Freemason , and as I believe that many Masonic Theists think with
myself in the matter , 1 am induced to lay my complaint before your impartial judgment . Although in common with our Jewish and Mahom edan brethren we are fully prepared to avow our belief in , and reverence for , the G . A . O . T . U ., wc do so on the purely
Theistic basis laid down by the principles of Craft Masonry , the only principles it seems to us which can fully carry out that great doctrine properly denominated by you to-day as the key-note of all true Masonic precept and practice .
