Brn . Dr . B . W . Richardson presided on Saturday week at a preliminary public meeting , held at the rooms < jf the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , to consider a reform of the methods of slaughtering animals required for food . It was resolved that a society should be formed to secure , amongst other objects , public slaughter-houses and efficient daily inspection .

Justice Kay thc other day described as - " a shocking state of things " the swallowing up of an estate in costs . An action was instituted in a case of Meyrick v James , in 1 S 74 , for the administration of the estate of a person who died in 1 S 46 . There was a sum of £ 701 ; in Consols , another sum of £ 136 on deposit , and another sum of £ S . 1 he only debt against the esrate was a sum of £ 41 ) .

The money in Court , the above sum of £ 853 , was not sullito pay the costs of the proceedings , which " have been going on since 1 S 74 . His lordship directed that there should be a very carelul taxation of costs , and refused to give liberty to apply in Chambers , but ordered that any application should be made in Court , as he wished thc Court to keep its hands over the . money until he saw what the costs were .

Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Albany , K . G ., has graciously consented to preside at a festival dinner , in aid of the Chanty Hospital lor the Paralysed and Epileptic , at the Freemasons' Tavern , on 'Tuesday , the 14 th March next .

A few minutes before the commencement of the afternoon service on Sunday , the one-and-a-half ton weight of the new chimes at ( he St . Albans Abbey fell a distance of twenty-four feet on to the tower ceiling . The ceiling was not peirced by the weight , but one of the painted panels was splintered , and several pieces of wood

fell into the body of the church . One person received an injury to his skull , and another injury to an arm . In consequence of the accident neither the afternoon nor the evening service was held . Ihe new chimes were erected only last summer . 'The wire attached to the weight gave way on Sunday , hence the fall .

Dancing was kept up with great spirit until four o clock , all present seeming to thoroughly enjoy the entertainment provided . We can but express a hope that the financial result of this ball may be as satisfactory as those which have preceded it , and that the institution which may be fortunate enough to come in for the surplus may have a large amount to receive .

A few minutes before the commencement of the afternoon service on Sunday , the one-and-a-half ton weight of the new chimes at ( he St . Albans Abbey fell a distance of twenty-four feet on to the tower ceiling . The ceiling was not peirced by the weight , but one of the painted panels was splintered , and several pieces of wood
