Having gained such a character , it shall be my endeavour during the coming 12 months to the best of my ability to uphold it . The interest and good of the Alfred Lodge shall be my first care , and 1 am prepared , if the necessity should arise , firmly to maintain the authority with which you have entrusted me . I hope to have health to attend to the duties of the office , and that we shall all co-operate and make the year harmonious and happy .
Bro . Blackburn then proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , Bro . David Wedderspoon . " In doing so he spoke in glowing terms of the patience , the perseverance , and the great ability of his late Secretary . They had worked shoulder to shoulder , and he knew and recognised his worth . A better brother or one more closely attached to his lodge it would be impossible to find . Bro . Dyson also spoke in eulogistic terms of Bro . Wedderspoon and his disinterested labours for the good of the Alfred Lodge . Bro . Wedderspoon briefly acknowledged the kind remarks of the VV . M .
Other toasts comprised " The Worshipful Masters of the Sister Leeds Lodges , " "The Visitors , " and "The Officers of the Alfred Lodge , " all of which were duly honoured and suitably responded to . The Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings , which throughout were characterised by good fellowship and true Masonic feelinrj .

Benns , was then presented and installed into the chair by the outgoing Master , Bro . F . Kedge , in an able and impressive manner . The new W . Kedge . The VV . M . then presented a Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . F . Kedge , LP . M ., as a small token in recognition of the ability with which he had discharged his duties , remarking that he had filled the office of W . M . with honour to himself and satisfaction to the brethren . Bro . Kedge acknowledged the jewel in very brief , but suitable ,
terms . Two gentlemen were proposed for initiation at the next meeting , and after other business the lodge was closed . A superb banquet followed , and was admirably served , for which Bro . Evans was responsible . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . In responding for "The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bro . Henry Garrod , P . G . P ., whose name was connected with the toast , stated that once more he had the great honour to return thanks on behalf of the Grand Officers . So long as the two heads
—Bros . Lord Lathom and Lord Mount Edgcumbe—who took the greatest interest in Freemasonry , held office , the Craft would flourish . He hoped to be spared to have the privilege of acknowledging the toast in the lodge for many years . Bro . F . Kedge , I . P . M ., proposed " The W . M . " He said that it was undoubtedly the toast of the evening . All who knew him were pleased to see him in his exalted position . He was bred in the lodge , and had been educated there in Masonry , and he would make one of the very best of Worshipful Masters . On behalf of the members he promised him most cordial support , and that he would be a popular ruler went without saying .
Bro . R . W . Benns , W . M ., responded . He thanked Bro . Kedge for his kind words and tbe members for the hearty manner the toast had been received . He was proud to be the Master of that , his mother , lodge , and would do everything in his power to promote its interests , and at the end of his year of office he hoped they would not have a worse opinion of him than they had then .
The W . M . gave " The Visitors . " He stated that it was a toast which was always received with acclamation at every Masonic gathering , and the Belgrave Lodge was not behind in that respect . In reading out the list of their guests , he remarked that what they lacked in quantity they made up in quality , and , on behalf of the lodge , he gave them all a hearty welcome , coupling with the toast the names of Bros . W . J . Songhurst , W . M . ; J . Boulton , P . M . ; W . B . Fendick , P . P . S . G . D . ; and C O . Burgess , P . M . p <; r . n . <; .. rr » u
In response , Bro . Songhurst said that Worshipful Masters were enjoined to visit other lodges to see the working , & c ; he had been much instructed by his attendance that evening , and it gave him much pleasure to witness the excellent working of tbe Installing'Master , Bro . Kedge . The members were to be congratulated in having so good a W . M ., and if he followed in the footsteps of his able predecessors he would be another success in the annals ot their well-known lodge ,
Bro . Boulton also accnwlcdged the toast , observing that their lodge seemed to be a very happy one . He was astounded to hear that they had had the same Secretary for 39 years , and it was a wonderful thing to have so old an officer . He had known Bro . Garrod , their Secretary , for many years—he did not like to say ho * long—and he was one of the very best of fellow * . He ivrjs pleased with all he had seen and heard , and
hoped he would not be forgotten at their next installation meeting , and , if asked to attend , he would gladly come . Bro . Fendick said that he was glad to visit the lodge once again . The pleasurable thing about it was that , although it was an old lodge , there was a youthful expression about them all , commencing with their Secretary , who had only been in that office for 39 years , but he still appeared young and vigorous to work hard for the Craft .
Hi n . C O . Burgess said it had been his good fortune to have been present when Bro . Kedge , the I . P . M ., was installed , and he was glad to have seen him instal his successor in so able a manner . He was not surprised to find the I . P . M ' s . working admirable , because he had witnessed his work in other lodges , and it was always exrellent . The lodge was a genial one , and he hoped to see the present W . M . instal hi > successor next year .
In giving the toast of "The Initiate , " the W . M . stated that all were agreed that without new blood Masonry would soon be on the wane . They were very pleased to receive the initiate , and he sincerely hoped that he would prove a worthy member and some day become VV . M . of that , his mother lodge . Bro . VV . II . Davis said that he rose with mingled thoughts and proud feelings to respond to the toast . He was naturally surprised and somewhat upset with what he had gone through , but he supposed that all initiates felt the same as he did then . There were several present who were old and dear friends of his , and he was more than pleased to be one of them
In submitting the toast of "'I he Installing Master and Past Masters , " the W . M . remarked that he felt sure that all were impressed with the excellent working of the I . P . M ., and it was not necessary for him to dilate upon his great * arviccs in Masonry , because they were so well known and appreciated . The members knew the great worth of the Past Master ? , and he was honoured wilh their presence . He joined with the least the names of Bros . Kedge , I . P . M . ; T . Weeks , P . M . ; and E . E . Austin , P . M .
Bro . Kedge , I . P . M ., responded . He said that if he cut his remarks short he mint be forgiven , as he felt he could not trust to his feelings . He was initiated in the lod ^ e , and if he had not been able to instal his successor it would have been a bitter disappointment . It gave him very much pleasure to instal the W . M ., and if he had given satisfaction to thc-m during his term of office and also as Installing Alaster ho was highly pleased and gratified . Bros . Weeks , P . M ., and Austin , P . M ., also replied in happy terms-

The W . M . gave " Tbe Treasurer and Secretary . " He stated that he regretted the absence of the Treasurer , Bro . Coltart , P . M ., who was his father in Masonry , as he would have liked him to have been there to see him ( the W . M . ) installed . Then , as to Bro . Garrod , the Secretary , he was a host in himself ; but what could he say about a Secretary who had held that office with honour for 39 years ? He was , as they all knew , one of the best of friends , a most efficient officer , and beloved by them all , and he hoped
he would be with them for many more years . Bro . H . Garrod , P . M ., Sec , responded . He said that no one could deplore the absence of the Treasurer more than he did , and he felt sure that he had the sympathy of all the members in his illness . As to himself as Secretary , they had heard enough about him that evening ; but he thanked them for the very hearty way he had always been received , and , as he had stated on many occasions , he would continue to do his utmost for the lodee .
The W . M . proposed " The Officers , " remarking that a Master , however comoetent , would be a failure without good officers . He was blessed with an excellent staff , who were all good men and true , and when their time came to take higher office they would not be found wanting , and he was oroud of them . Bro . C Doresa , S . W ., replied . He stated that he and his colleagues would be glad to render every assistance . Everything came to those who waited . He had been a member of the lodge for 10 years and he was still waiting , and if it ever came to his happy lot to be elected VV . M ., it would be ample return for his years of office .
Bro . S . E . Williams , J . VV ., also acknowledged the toast , observing that it was gratifying to the officers to know that the W . M . and the members were satisfied with them .
The Tyler s toast ended a grand evening . The excellent vocal entertainment was under the direction of Bro . W . Graves , in which the following took part : Bro . VV . T . Spencer and Messrs . Lockwood Harradine and Ernest Fireday ; but special mention should be made of Bro . Spencer for his great efforts .

An excellent dinner was admirably served up by Bro . S . Harvey , the Club Steward , during the progress of which some choice operatic selections were played in excellent style by Mr . Ough ' s orchestral band . The loyal toasts having been duly honoured , The W . AL gave , in appropriate terms , " The R . W . Prov . Grand Master of Devon and Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge . " Bro . S . Jew , P . M ., P . P . G . T ., who acknowledged the toastsaid he was proud to
, find another member of his old corps—the Royal Alirines—placed in the chair of K . S . The Prov . Grand Officers , Past and Present , had proved themselves to be a useful body , worthy of the honour conferred on them . It was an indisputable tact that without their counsel and assistance the various lodges , and more particularly Prov . Grand Lodge , could not be worked so well , efficiently , and harmoniously as they had been .
lheb . W ., Uro . W . H . Bird , then submitted "The Health of the VV . M ., Bro . G . F . Miller , " which was enthusiastically received . He said he had followed Bro . Miller up the ladder , and was most pleased to see him elected to the chair . Bro . Miller , he remarked , was most popular not only with the brethren of the lodge , but membersof the Craft generally , and , being a "good Alason and true , " he had no doubt he would have a most pleasant and prosperous year of office .
Bro . Miller , who was heartily received on rising , made a feeling response . Having thanked them for the honour they had conferred on him , he assured them that nothing sho'ildbe wanting on his part in his endeavour to make the work go smoothly , the lodge prosperous , and the brethren happy . In conclusion , he appealed to the Past Masters and brethren to support him as truly , loyally , and faithfully during his term of ortice as they had his esteemed and able predecessor .
The W . M . then proposed the toast of "The I . P . M ., Bro . S . Fry , and the Past Masters of the Lodge . " The feast was cordially drunk . Bros . Fry , H . VV . Pengelly , and J . VV . Foster suitably replied . The latter said he was fully in accord with the Worshipful Master ' s opinion that the Past Masters were
"the backbone" of the lodge—a sentiment for which he was humorously twitted for the remainder of the evening . Bro . VV . J . Stanbury , P . M ., P . P . A . G . D . C , submitted "The Senior and Junior Wardens and Officers of the Lodge . " Bros . A . G . Friend and J . Kider responded .
In giving " The Treasurer and Secretary , " Bro . Gillman , P . M ., P . P . A . G . D . of C , spoke in eulogistic terms of their past services . Bros . S . Panter and VV . A . btaton , in reply , said they had watched the Misonk career of the W . M . with a great deal of interest , and felt assured he would carry out the duties of his office with credit and honour to himself , and to the general satisfaction and approbation of the brethren .
Bro . the Rev . E . Sullivan , B . rV ., R . N ., Chap ., proposed " The Visitors . " Bros . S . Jew and T . G . Taylor , S . W . 105 , responded . Other toasts were given . Then followed a grand musical evening , in which the following took part : Bros . A Serle , L . R . A . M . ; Wright , and Collum ; Messrs . he would be with them for many more years . Bro .
Spencer for his great efforts .

lheb . W ., Uro . W .
