THE APPROACHING SCHOOL ELECTIONS .

We briefly referred in our "Notes of last week lo the issue of the voting papers with accompanying lists of candidates for the October School Elections mentioning casually that a Quarterly General Court of the Governors and Subscribers of the

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS would be held in the large hall of Freemasons' Tavern , at thc hour of 12 noon on Thursday , the 7 thOctober , when ^ vacancies would be filled from an approved list of 26 candidates . Of the

latter , eight hail from London , and there is also a ninth girl in whose success it has an interest in common with Bengal , Kent Northumberland , and Essex ; the remaining 17 are from the Provinces . The London are Nos . 4 and 7 , who were both candidates

forthefirsttimein April and then polled aisyand i 078 votcs respectively ; and Nos . 12 , 13 , 16 , 19 , 21 , and 23 , of whom No . 19 has this one and only chance of being elected . The girl in whom London has an interest conjointly with sundry Provinces and

the District of Bengal ranks as No . 25 . Of the 17 Provincial candidates three are furnished by West Yorkshire , namely No . 2 —a last case—with 30 votes in hand , and Nos . 20 and 26 , while the others are from the following Provinces or Districts : No . 1

from North Wales and South Wales ( W . D . ) whose first experience was obtained in October , 18 96 , and who has 1541 votes already to her credit ; No . 3 , who hails from South Wales ( W . D . ) and brings forward 70 votes from April , and No . 5 , Gloucestershire ,

who already stands well with 2612 votes . No . 6 from Bengal starts with 806 votes , and No . 8 , from Oxfordshire , with 785 votes , while the remainder are all of them new cases , namely , No . 9 from Essex , No . 10 from Kent , No . 11 Valparaiso ,

No . 14 — a last case — from the Eastern ar . d Western Divisions of Lancashire , No . 15 from Worcestershire ; No . 17 from Suffolk and No . 18 with claims on Norfolk and Suffolk ; No . 22 from Warwickshire , and No . 24 from Sussex . There

are 20 children who have lost their fathers , two who are motherless , two who have both parents living , and one who has lost both , while in the remaining case it is stated that it is not known if the father is living or dead . In thc case of 14 of the girls

the father subscribed to a Iodge or lodges for 10 years or upwards and 12 in which he was a subscribing member for less than 10 years . In several instances the father had held office in Province or Iodge , but there werc only four in which hc had

rendered any service to our Institutions . There are three children whose names will be removed from the list in the event of their failing to win vacancies at this election , and thev rank as Nos , 2 , 14 , and 19 respectively .

The Approaching School Elections.

Thc election of children into the ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION KOR BOYS will take place at the Quarterly General Court of Governors and Subscribers , which will be held at Freemasons' Tavern on

Friday , the Sth October , when 15 vacancies will be filled from an approved list of 49 candidates , of whom 17 hail from London , two from London and Kent , and 30 from the Provinces . Thc former include Nos . 3 , 4 , 5 , and 6 , who became candidates in April ,

18 9 6 , and have polled 329 , 461 , 2023 , and 1506 votes respectively ; Nos . 9 , 10 , 13 , and 14 , who severally have to their credit 1299 , I 944 , II 6 9 , and 1124 votes from the last two elections ; Nos . 17 , lS , 22 , and 29 , whovvere candidates for the first time in April , and then

obtained 435 , 327 , 129 , and I 922 votes respectively , the last being fortunate in having such a number standing already to his credit as there is no doubt the approaching contest will be a very severe one , and hc has only this chance of winning a place . Thc

remaining five—Nos . 31 , 37 , 47 , 4 8 , and 49—are new cases . The two boys with claims on London and Kent are No . 30 , who brings forward 2131 votes , and No . 33 , a new and at thc same time last case . Of the 30 Provincial candidates Devonshire , Essex , and Hants

and the Isle of Wight furnish each of ( hem three , the trio from Devonshire being placed at Nos . 8 , 28 , and 38 respectively , No . 8 having 26 7 votes to the good from the elections in October 18 9 6 , and April last , and No . 28 , 237 votes from April , while the

other is a new case . The Essex trio include No . 2 , who has obtained I 2 I 7 votes as the result of three previous attempts , and Nos . 32 and 43 who are new cases , while the Hampshire and Isle of Wight three are No . 12 , who starts with 2411 votes from

the last two elections , and Nos . 35 and 3 6 , who are new cases . Buckinghamshire , Lancashire ( W . D . ) , Northumberland , South Wales ( E . D . ) , each furnish two candidates ; the Bucks pair being No . 20 , with a credit of 55 votes from April , and a ncw case at

No . 45 . The two W . Lancashire lads are at No . 21 , with live votes in hand , and No . 26 , with three votes . Northumberland is responsible for Nos . 42 and 44 , and South Wales ( E . D . ) , for

Nos . 25 and 27 , who polled in April last 32 and 27 votes respectively . The remaining 13 are distributed as follows : beginning with No . I from Cumberland and Westmorland , with 1161 votes from the last four elections . No . Ii

( Northants and Hunts ) , No . 15 ( Guernsey and Alderney ) , and No . 16 ( Kent ) on their third , with 423 , 437 , and 1060 votes respectively . The Oxfordshire , Herefordshire , and Staffordshire boys , who made their debut as

candidates in April , are placed at Nos . 19 , 23 , and 24 respectively , and will start—the fi : * st named with 334 votes , the second with 3 , and thc third with 8 votes . The others are ncw cases , and hail from Durham ( No . 34 ) ; Guernsey , Hants and Isle of Wight , and

Malta ( No . 9 ) ; Lancashire ( W . D . ) and Derbyshire ( No . 40 ) ; East Lancashire ( No . 41 ); and Middlesex , East Lancashire , and Monmouthshire ( No . 4 6 ) . There are 40 of these boys who arc fatherless , four who have lost both parents , and five who have

both parents living . In a large proportion of the cases the father held office in Lodge or Province , and in about one-fourth of the cases had done service to one or more of our Institutions . As regards those who will have their names removed from the

list in the event of their failing to win places at this election , they are , fortunately , only two in number—Nos . 29 and 33—but , in behalf of these , as well as of Nos . 2 , 14 , and 19 on the Girls' Hst , who are in the same predicament , we make our usual
