In conclusion , the W . M . hoped that every lodge in Cheshire would have their walls adorned in a similar manner . The portrait vvas procured from Bro .

completely overwhelmed with congratulations on his newly acquired honour as Provincial Grand Treasurer . In fact the good old Lodge of Unanimity , vvhich is within two years of its centenary celebration , never stood higher in the esteem of the sister lodges of Stockport , and the events of the evening vvill long remain a happy and pleasant

recollection to all who vvere so fortunate in having an opportunity to visit the lodge . The old lodge is in a very flourishing state ; it has over £ 100 balance in hand ordinary funds , and nearly £ 20 moneys acquired during the 10 months they meet as a result of the Charity bag at the social board . The lodge has an unbroken record of 9 S years , and Cheshire , vve believe , is the oldest province in the United Kingdom .

The appearance of the banqueting chamber , with its profusion of pot and cut flowers , ferns , palms , and coloured shades to the lights had a most charming effect , whilst the repast itself vvas everything that could be wished for , and Miss Wade , the hostess , may well be proud of the sole efforts of her own chef , and merited the remark of Bro .

G . Ll . Palmer , P . M ., that it vvas a thoroughly good dinner . Bro . W . R . Brown , of course , occupied the chair , and gave a hearty welcome to all , and during the evening spoke of the great pleasure it gave him to see so many brethren present of Lodge 632 . The vice-chair was ably filled by Bro . F . VV . Selfe , S . W . After the removal of the cloth , the usual loyal and

Masonic toasts were given , Bro . Tombs replying to that of "The D . G . M . of England , the Earl of Lathom , and the rest of the Grand Officers , " proposed by Bro . G . Ll . Palmer ; and Bro . Sir Gabriel Goldney responding to that of "The Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Lord Methuen . " The Worshipful Master gave "The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Sir Gabriel Goldney , and the rest of the Prov . Present and Past , " which was suitably responded to by Bros . Sir G . Goldney and H . Bevir , and the former brother proposed " The Health of the Founder of the Feast , " vvhich was received with great acclamation , and Bro . Brown replied in some well-chosen remarks . Ritchie , first as J ., then as H ., and finally as Z ., for vvhich splendid services he vvas accorded a hearty vote of thanks , and vvas unanimously elected an honorary

member of the chapter . The M . E . Z . invested his officers , as follows : Comps . Comyns , P . S . ; W . Seager , S . N . ; Williams , ist Asst . S . ; Vansittart , 2 nd Asst . S . ; Hearn , D . C ; and Shackleton , Stwd . It vvas then resolved that the chapter should remove to the Criterion Hotel , whither the mother lodge either has taken or intends to take up its habitation .

The chapter vvas then closed , and the companions adjourned to a superbly appointed banquet . Among the other companions present vvere Comps . E . Morris , Treas . ; C . Hammerton , P . G . D . C ; J . Montgomery , P . Z . 515 , P . D . G . H . Malta ; R . Warren , P . Z . 1472 , P . P . G . Std . Br . Essex ; E . Palmer , M . E . Z . gi _ 3 ; J . J . Woolley , H . 2 ig 4 ; Rev . C . A . Solbe , 13 ; Captain J . Rowan , 349 ; C Jolly , P . Z . 1472 ; and others .

The M . E . Z . having given the usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts , Comp . Kennedy , acting as the I . P . Z ., proposed the toast of " The M . E . Z ., " and in so doing said it vvas a most important one , more especially as it vvas to the health of a distinguished companion , who , for the first time occupied the chair of Z ., and who had rendered both the lodge and chapter yeoman service . That

vvas also the first meeting of the chapter at vvhich any work had been done , vvhich work—at least , that done by himself—had been undertaken under difficulties , but now he vvas proud to say they had a First Principal who would carry out the duties of the office with all that care and excellence that had distinguished his reign as Master of the Ubique Lodge . It vvas , however , quite unnecessary for him to say

another word as to Comp . Major Ritchie ' s Masonic qualifications , but he could not help referring to the services rendered by him to another Degree in the Province of Kent , where some 11 years ago he founded and served the office of first Master of the Excelsior Mark Lodge , and upon vvhich occasion no less than 39 candidates vvere advanced at

one and the same time . Comp . Ritchie vvas also the first Master of the Ubique Lodge , and now he was the first Z . of the Ubique Chapter . It showed the great interest Comp . Ritchie took in Masonry , and he felt sure that under his rule the Ubique Chapter would , like its mother lodge , become one of the strongest and most successful in the Metropolitan district .

Comp . Ritchie , in response , said he stood before them that night in the proud position of their First Principal , having passed through the third and second chairs , and arrived at that of the first , and not only the first chair , but to the position of the first Z . that had occupied it , and no effort of his should be spared to make himself worthy of the position , and the chapter a great success . Their good ship had been safely launched , and vvas now fully manned ,

and over whatever sea it saded , he trusted it would always have a good man to guide it , and bring it safe into harbour . At present their numbers vvere not very large , but he hoped soon to see it with a full complement of a hundred members . He thanked them for their hearty reception of the toast , and could assure them that at all times , either for the good of the Ubique Lodge or Chapter , his services vvere at their disposal .

Comp . Weston , in responding for the "Second and Third Principals , " said lie vvas sure every companion present vvas proud to see Comp . Ritchie presiding over them . They had been successful in getting their old friend Comp . Penfold to perform the ceremony of installation , and that excellent companion deserved and had their

heartiest thanks . So far as he personally vvas concerned , he should do all that laid in his power to make the M . E . Z . ' s year of office a pleasant and flourishing one . Comp . Arnold also briefly replied , and then the M . E . Z . proposed the toast of "The Installing Officer" in glowing terms .

Comp . Penfold , in response , said his services were very small , although , of course , unless there vvas an Installing Officer , there could not be an installation , and so , no officers . However , it vvas a labour of love , because , as the M . E . Z . had said , it vvas a renewal of old associations , vvhich commenced with the consecration of the Excelsior Mark Lodge , had been cjntinued at the consecration of the Ubique Craft

Lodge , and vvere made even more pleasant by the ceremony he had had the honour of performing that day . He was pleased to see the chapter doing so well , and vvas sure that so long as they had such excellent Masons as they had , the chapter would flourish . He spoke highly of the interest taken in the chapter by the M . E . Z ., and felt sure that it would in time become one of the foremost chapters in the

Metropolitan district . "The Exaltees" having been toasted , Comp . Montgomery responded for "The Visitors , " and wished the chapter every success . Comp . Woolley also wished them every success , and the M . E . Z . a good year of office . He should always cherish a fond remembrance of that his first visit to the chapter , and trusted that it would not be his last .

Comps . Palmer and Jolly also briefly responded , and after Comps . Comyns and Walker had responded for " The Officers , " the Janitor's toast concluded the proceedings .

Z ., who most efficiently acted as P . S . The historical lecture vvas delivered

by Comp . Scott Young , the symbolic by Comp . Clegg , and the mystical by Comp . Sillitoe . member of the chapter . The M . E . Z . invested his officers , as follows : Comps .
