Jubilee Of Freemasons In Halifax.

JUBILEE OF FREEMASONS IN HALIFAX .

The Lodge of Probity , No . 6 % celebrated ils third jubilee on Sunday the nth inst . Fifty and a hundred years ago the jubilees vvere commemorated by attending divine service at the parish church , and on Sunday the same course vvas followed . The Lorlge of Probity is one of the oldest in the district , having been established in 1738 . With the exception of about 20 , the Iodge is the oldest on the registry of the Grand

Lodge of England . So far as Yorkshire is concerned , it is the oldest lodge in the county . It vvas founded by a Bro . John Senior , and two brethren vvho assisted in its formation were Bro . William Horton , of . Coley , and Bro . C Edward Rooke , of Royds Hall , Low Moor . Subsequently these two brethren vvere successively appointed two of the first Provincial Grand Masters for the West Riding of

Yorkshire , before the Yorkshire province was made . It would seem that the formation of a Provincial Grand Lodge vvas somewhat premature , as only one lodge is known to have been in existence in the West Riding of Yorkshire at that time . A number of lodges may , therefore , have been in existence in the neighburhood which vvere not connected with any Grand Lodge . The first proof of the existence

of the Lodge of Probity is obtained from lists which were published by the authority of the Grand Lodge in London , and the first records of the lodge which are available commence in 1762 , and are continued up to the present day . These records are in the possession of the Lodge of Probity . Tbe first meeting place vvas at the Black Bull Inn , Halifax , and afterwards the lodge had its

quarters at . the Rose and Crown Inn , the Old Cock Hotel , the Union Cross Hotel , the Bath Tavern , and then to the Union Cross Hotel again . In 1 S 69 , the lodge again held its meetings at the Old Cock Hotel , where they vvere continued up to the year 1869 , when the Freemasons' Hall was built . The meetings have of course since been held there .

The officers for the present year are : Bros , Francis Fleming , W . M . ; Herbert Crossley , S . W . ; William Cash , J . VV . ; R . W . Evans , Chap . ; J . W . Davis , P . M ., Treas . ; Walter Wright , Sec . ; Fred Buckley , S . D . ; F . P . Horton , J . D . j R . Patchett , I . G . ; Charles Pole , Almoner ; W . Emmott , D . C ; J . H . Geo . Patchett , James Duff , Wm . G . White , Alexander Scott , and G . W . Baxter , Stwds . ; and Joseph Sagar , Tyler . Most of the brethren met at the Masonic Hall about 10 o ' clock on Sunday morning , and walked in procession to the parish church . Some others vvho came by train were met at the station by Bro . Jas . Booth , Mayor of Halifax , and went direct to church . The wet weather marred the

effect of the procession , overcoats and umbrellas hiding largely the gay Masonic habilaments which were worn , but as it vvas a number of people congregated in the streets to witness the sight . Among those present at the church vvere the following : Bros . P . VV . Tew , P . G . D . Eng ., Prov . G . M . ; H . Smith , P . G . D . En ? ., D . P . G . M . ; Gration , P . S . G . W . ; C .

S . G . W . ; C .
