COSBURN , Caxton Printing Works , Market-place , Newbury . This is an old friend , whose re-appearance at the com mencement of the year is always welcome . Bro . Cosburn has contrived , as in his previous issues , to compress an

immense amount of useful and necessary inlormation into his directory ; . the necessary being principally of local interest connected with the many towns and hamlets in the four counties it describes , and the useful beinsr of a general and local character relating to postal and railway arrangements , country carriers , friendly societies , charities , & o , & c , & c . The matter is well classified , and there is abundant descriptive matter , which is sure to prove of

interest to intending visitors to the most important places . Of course , the great feature is lite directory proper , comprising the names and addresses of the clergy , gentry , and principal residents in about too places in Berks , Hants , Oxon , and Wilts , while the value of the book as a general guide is very materially enhanced by the addition of a

compendium containing the results of the General Election last year . Evidently no pains have been spared in order to ensure that the information shall be as accurate as possible , and references to various parts of the directory , with a view to testing it in respect of this necessary requirement , have fully satisfied us that Bro . Cosburn has succeeded in making it trustworthy .

This is the 27 th year of publication of one of the completest and best provincial guide books that have boen brought under our notice . Our experience of former issues has always been most satisfactory , and though it would bc difficult to suggest any particular branches of information in which improvement upon the previous edition was

possi ble , it appears to us that the editor and compiler , Bro . P . Soman , of the Norwich Argus , has somehow managed to infuse an additional amount of usefulness into the handbook for the current year . One feature stands out most prominently , namely , the various readable papers which are always to be found in this East Anglian Guide . These include , in the present volume , " East Anglian Gleanings , " " A Retrospect of Norfolk Life . " " The Farmer ' s Feathered

Friends , " and "Curiosities of a County History ; " besides which , there is a well-written account of "A French Agricultural Show , " as well as one of a " Norfolk Christmas Show . " The past year is very fully reviewed in the article entitled "The Past East Anglian Year ; " and this is supplemented by an " East Anglian Obituary for 1 SS 5 , " and seeing that the "Handbook" aims principally at excellence in its agricultural information , by what is

undoubtedly both locally and generally the most valuable contribution of all , namely , the paper on "The Farming of East Anglia in 1 SS 5 , " by Bro . Clare Sewell Read , who is one of our great authorities on this class of subject . In short , the " East Anglian Handbook " is a model of its kind , retaining all its old characteristics and showing improved form—that is to say , where anything in the way of improvement could Le introduced .

Everts and Co ., 18 S 4 ; London Agents : VV . Hogg , Paternoster ' row , E . C . Bro . Mackey ' s work is so well known and so highly valued , that a new edition by a competent scholar is sure to

meet with a welcome on both sides of the Atlantic , and especially as more than 10 years have elapsed since thc former edition was issued , and the result of further and deeper researches have placed new mailer within reach which was inaccessible to Bro . Mackey . The plan followed by the editor is a satisfactory one . He has disturbed nothing of what was compiled by Bro . Mackey himself . He has withdrawn the few pages of supplement which had

been furnished by the latter , and which embraced such material as in the progress of so immense a work had accidentally been omitted in its proper place or plans . In lieu of this he has substituted an " Addendum " of upwards o £ 100 pages of entirely new matter , arranged strictly in the manner adopted in the original Encyclopaedia , and

furnished like it with an excellent index . Bro . McClenachan ' s first care , in fulfilling his self-imposed task , was to present a just memoir of Bro . Mackey , and in this he has succeeded most admiiably , a sketch in which the labours of our distinguished American brother , from his birth in 1 S 07 till his death in 1 SS 1 , are clearly set forth being the result .
