Bro . Lt .-Col . J . Hanslip Ward \ vas initiated in the Star in the East Lodge in 1883 , while Mayor of Harwich , a position to which he was elected at the early age of twenty-four . In 18 90 he joined the Mistley Lodge , Xo . 2339 , and in 1902 , the British Union Lodge , No . 114 . He has filled the Master ' s

chair in his mother lodge on two occasions , in 1888 and 18 9 8 . He has also been twice honoured by appointment to Provincial Grand rank , first as Provincial Grand Registrar in 188 9 , and as Senior Grand Warden in 18 9 6 .

He subsequently joined the Homfray Lodge , No . 13 62 , the Charles Lyne Lodge , No . 296 4 , and is also an honorary member of the Albert-Edward Lodge , No . 1429 , and Glyn Ebbw Lodge , No . 2336 . His appointment as Deputy Provincial Grand Master was made in 190 ^; in succession to Lt .-Col . Charles R . Lyne ,

P . G . D . Bro . Phillips was exalted in the S . Wales Royal Arch Chapter and became First Principal in 18 99 . He is a Vice-President of the Boys' School and of the Benevolent Institution , and a Life Governor of the Girls' School , and has served several Stewardships .

also a member of the Rahere Lodge , which was founded by brethren connected with St . Bartholomew ' s Hospital . In the Royal Arch Degree Bro . jessop was exalted in the British Chapter , No . 8 , and filled the chair of Z . in 1903 . He is also
