No . 2 . —FoRWAKD TO STOCKHOLM . Prom Gottenburg to the capital our most direct route would have been by rail ; but , at tbe earnest solicitation of many friends , Ave Avere induced to make a slight detour in order to have an
opportunity of visiting the far-famed Palls of Trollhattan . We therefore took a seven hours'journey by riversteamer , which enabled us to get numerous beautiful views of the country . Portunately Ave had a companion of the niost pleasant character in
Herr Eudolph LefHler , ivhose kindness in pointing out the chief points of interest , and in acting as amateur interpreter was most unremitting and valuable .
On our Avay up the river au excellent dinner Avas served , during which Ave Avere surprised to hear a gentleman accost us in English Avifch a request to " pass the vinegar . " Presently we discovered that he he had lived in our town in
England for ten years , and that he Avas a merchant in Gottenburg to whom we had brought an introduction , but whom we had been unable to meet with there . This chance rencontre was very singular and afforded us additional pleasure .
To those Avho have seen the Palls of Niagara , the Palls of Trollhattan Avill be second-rate ; but to the European AVIIO has never travelled beyond his own quarter of the globe , they are interesting , not only for their magnificence , but also because they are the finest in Europe . England has no waterfalls of any size . Southey tells us— "How
the water comes down at Lodore ; " but we have seen Lodore more than once threatening to dry up altogether . In Scotland the Falls of the Clyde , near Lanark , are extremely beautiful , and , indeed , to our mind , exhibits one of the noblest
vieAVS of nature in the three kingdoms . But what Lodere is to the Falls of Clyde , the latter are to Trollhattan . As the roarinar , bubbling- seethinowaters such in a mighty torrent from rock to rock amid the deafening noise , there comes
irresistibly over the human spirit a feeling of reverence for the Great Architect , and a consciousness that He " yetliveth . " Crossing asmallsuspension-bridge we stood upon a little island Avhere Ave Avere circled by the foaming flood , and almost deafened by the din of the cataract . Then Ave heard , as it Avere , the voice of the Great Teacher expounding the mys-

From Trollhattan we were driven in a carnage to Wenersborg , and part of the Avay our road was literally on solid rock . At Wenersborg Ave found ourselves in an awkward predicament . Arriving at about 10 p . m ., we ^ disoovered that at the prin
cipal inn all the beds Avere taken , in anticipation of a fair which Avas to be held on the following day . Imagine our position—in the interior of Sweden , standing out in the cold , a foreigner ancl unknown , wearied and houseless , the driver of our
carriage impatient of the delay to his return home ! When Artemns Ward offended Betsey Jane , she could not have wished him a Averse fate . Happily an enterprising individual in the crowd assembled to do us honour , Avhispered a feAV

a " winter garden" manufactured for the occasion . A large room Avas divided into little arbours by young fir trees iu tubs , which Avere hung Avith festoons of variegated lamps , making up a really pretty scene , Avhile in an adjoining room several natives of industrious habits Avorked hard on divers
musical instruments . Next morning we breakfasted at 5 a . m . on what is said to be the greatest delicacy in SAveden—Elk—and immediately afterwards took train for Stockholm , the Aveather not being propitious for a
voyage across the lakes . By the Avay , the Swedes tell a droll story about a " mad Englishman" in connexion with Lake Wener , Avhich commences at Wenersborg , ancl is about 140 miles long . Once , while crossing the lake in stormy weather , the
captain of one of the steamers Avas astounded to see a small boat , containing only one person , tossing about at the mercy of the waves in the centre of the lake . It is reported that the captain instinctively remarked , — " I am sure that is a
crazy Englishman , " feeling convinced that no SAvede would have been so fool-hardy , The unlucky Avight Avas hoisted up , boat and all , into the steamer , ivhen it was found that he had started in his boat across Lake Wener—on which even steamers lose sight of land—equipped only Avith " a tooth-brush and toAvel , " and destitute of any
