proceedings , the principal chair being afterwards relinquished by him in favour of Bro . Wm . Mason Varley P . M ., who had undertaken to perform the ceremony of installing Bro . William Wasden Glover W . M .-elect into the chair of K . S ., in which he was assisted by Past Masters W . H . Hovvarth , Thomas Cooper , Zach . Tetlow , and Dr . G . H . Whitaker Org . P . P . G . The following Officers were appointed and invested , viz . : Bros . James Ryder S . W ., F . Thornham J . W ., Rev . T . Storey Bates Chap ., R . Hampson Treas ., William M . Varley P . M . Sec , James Kay S . D ., R . Harrison J . D ., Ralph Bates D . C , Zach Tetlow P . M . A . D . C ., Dr . G . H . Whitaker P . M . P . V . G . O . Organist and Charity Representative , Thomas Eddleston I . G ., J . H . Hadfield , R . T . Court , E . Yates , and M . Guthrie Stewards , W . Baldwin Tyler .
Before the Lodge was closed Bro . F . M . Palmer P . M . proposed the name of a candidate for initiation , which was seconded by Bro . Dr . Whitaker , and it is probable that the ceremony will take place at the next meeting . The Festival of St . John was subsequently held in the Lodge room , which had been expeditiously cleaved , and then artistically arranged for a substantial banquet , to which about sixty Brethren
sat down . Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , these being judiciously varied by songs , recitations , & c , the contributories being Bros . Dr . Whitaker , Rev . T . Storey Bates Chaplain ( Worshipful Master-elect of the Townley Parker Lodge , No . 1032 ) , Matthew Guthrie ,, Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 Prov . G . Tlr ., J . Urmston 1723 , A . W . Broughton 1723 , Howarth , Entwistle , and Grimes .
Bro . Howarth I . P . M . proposed the health of the newly installed Worshipful Master , and in a neat speech reverted to actions of self-abnegation which had endeared him to the Brethren , and which the speaker took the opportunity of extolling . Bro . Glover W . M . said , in reply , that he found it difficult to respond to a toast so cordially received . By his promotion to
the chair of K . S . he had reached one of the ambitions of his life , and he appreciated the kindness of the Brethren . He expressed a hope that they would similarly aspire . No W . M . could possibly be better pleased than he was by the harmony and concord which prevailed , and he anticipated thnt the Officers would rally round him as they had done round his predecessor . The Lodge was
strong , and financially in a good position , and the monies which had been given to the various Charities would meet with the approbation of all . He regretted that they had not had the appreciation from Provincial Grand Lodge which he thought the ) ' deserved , but sincerely hoped that before long the Lodge would be better recognised in this respect .
Bro . Glover then proposed the health of the Installing Master , adding that Bro . Wm . Mason Varley was a Mason of whom all felt proud , for he was always ready and willing to undertake any Office and perform any work allotted to him . „ Bro . Varley responded , thanking the Brethren for the enthusiasm which they had displayed . It had afforded him one of the
greatest pleasures of his life to install Bro . Glover , who was a most excellent Mason , and he looked forward to a pleasant year for him . By a sort of aside , he informed his auditors that he was the only Brother connected with the Lodge who had attended every meeting since its consecration , and his interest in it would be proved by the fact that he was ever ready to help the Brethren .
The W . M . proposed the toast of the I . P . M . Bro . Howarth who , he said , had served the Lodge faithfully and well , and if all the Brethren would follow his example they could not fail to be excellent Masons . The son of a good Mason , he was himself a model , and a typical Brother , and it was with the greatest possible
pleasure that he presented to him a handsome Past Masters jewel , as a proof of the esteem in which lie was held by the members of the Lodge . He sincerely hoped the recipient would enjoy good health and live long to wear it . The jewel bore the following inscription :
Presented to W . BRO . W . H . HOWARTH P . M ., by the Brethren of the Horwich Lodge , No . 2334 , as a token of their esteem , and in recognition of his services as W . M . 13 th November 1000 .
Bro . Howarth , in reply , said lie thanked the W . M . for his very flattering remarks , and also the Brethren for their enthusiasm , but he did not deserve all that had been said of him . The moment when he received the handsome jewel , as an evidence of their kind appreciation of his services , was the happiest of his life . It was possible that his rule in the chair might have been a little too
strict to commend it to every Brother , but he contended that the W . M . was supreme in his Lodge , and he had only followed the example of other Past Masters ; everything he had done being with a desire to carry out the true principles of Masonry What had been the result ? The Brethren had recognised the fact that it had been to their advantage , as was proved btheir ift to him
y g that evening , for which he heartily thanked them , and trusted with the YV . M . that he might enjoy long life and good health to wear it . He would prize the valuable jewel as long as he might live . Bro Zach Tetlow P . M . proposed the toast of the Officers of the Lodge , giving special prominence to the name of Brother R .
Hampson Treasurer , who had occupied that position for a period of twelve years . Bro . Tetlow said that the W . M . had the finest set of Officers possible , and he mentioned them individually praising each m turn and pointing out their particular qualifications and fitness for the position allotted to them . Reverting to the work of Bro . Hampson , he commended him for the admirable

manner in which he had performed his duties , adding that so long as the Lodge had such an excellent Brother to safeguard the finances it was bound to prosper . He could not tell them how proud he felt to be in a position to pin upon his breast a little memento of the goodwill of the Brethren . In conclusion he wished him long life and prosperity . Brother Hampson responded .
We may mention that the jewel referred to was m the form of a gold key , but without inscription . Among the numerous visitors , not previously mentioned , were Bros . John Heald P . M . P . P . G . A . D . C ., Hy . Dickinson W . M . 1032 , J . C . Varley P . M . 277 and 2702 , J . Y . Fowler J . . 1032 , J . F . K . Wreyford' I . G . 23 61 , J . Bentlcy 2387 , John Farnworth 350 , Thos . A capital repast was served by Bro . Buckland , and upon its termination the toast of the Queen was drank with due loyalty . Of course harmony was the order of the evening , but the pleasing entertainment was judiciously interspersed with a few necessary speeches .
Bro . Forss submitted the Mother Lodge , under whose sanction their Lodge of Instruction was held . This was acknowledged by Bro . Beamish , the senior Past Master present , who gave a brief resume of the history of the Lodge and its past vicissitudes , and
congratulated them upon its present proud position as the strongest in the Province . He also paid a well deserved compliment to the work of Preceptor Forss , who had contributed so much of his time to this end .
Bro . Forss , in reply , said it was a great pleasure to him to know that all the Officers of the Lodge were capable of doing their work in a proper and intelligent manner , this was of course owing to their attendance at the Lodge of Instruction , which had amply justified the granting of the licence under which they worked . The
members , however , should not remain satisfied at being able to perform any one Officer ' s work , but should endeavour to qualify themselves so as to undertake any duty when called upon . He would like to see a larger attendance of the Brethren at the weekly meetings , especially the younger members of the Lodge , who would , he was sure , be greatly interested .

Bro . J . Wynman was elected an Honorary Member of the Lodge , and acknowledged the compliment conferred upon him . The Lodge meets every Thursday at 8 o ' clock , and provides fine opportunities for Brethren residing in the neighbourhood who may
desire to learn or practice the ceremonies or ritual of the Craft ; it is well worth a visit . Bro . Rose P . M . has been Precentor of this Lodge for upwards of twenty years , and of the Peckham for nearly thirty , and has won a name for himself as one of the best tutors in London .
