ARDWICK LODGE , No . 2185 . THE annual mooting was held at the Midland Hotel , Ardwiok , on Monday , the 9 th inst ., the Lodge being opened in due form by

Bro . Richard Booth I . P . M . Tho minutes of the previous meeting were put for confirmation , after whioh Bros . Chapman and Kattz , who had expressed their desire to be passed to the degree of F . C . ' s , answered the usual questions and retired . Lodgo was then opened in

second degree , the candidates being admitted and passed in the usual manner , the ceremonies being performed by Bros . J . W . Melling and Wm . Hoyland P . M . 's respectively . The working tools were explained by Bro . Atkiuson S . W . Bro . Hayes W . M . then assumed the chair , and the ordinary bnsinoss of the Lodge was transacted . Hearty good wishes wero expressed from Provincial

Grand Lodgo by Bro . Hoyland Prov . G . P . and Bro . Williams P . P . G . Organist East Lancashire . Bro . Hoyland gave notice thut on the next meeting night be ' would move that ten guineas bo given to tbe East Lancashire Systematic Masonio aud Benevolent Institution . This having concluded the business of tho evening , tho Lodgo was closed in peaoo and harmony ,

after which the brethren ' partook of dinner . At tho social board which followed , the orthodox toasts were duly honoured , the duty of proposing tho healths of the newly passsd brethron devolving upon Bro . Melling . In the course of hiB remarks Bro . Melling said that at no time iu his Masonio experience bad he folt greater pleasure in proposing

such a toast as the one which he was about to submit to them , whioh he felt confident would be very warmly received by evory one present . The brethren thoy had passed that ovening were in every sense worthy men , who would not only prove themselves to be good Masons , but , judging from tbe attention which they had given to the ceremonies , and the interest they bail taken in all they had seen

and heard , would , if health aud strength wero vouchsafed to them , and the reqnisite timo could be spired , be found often at tho Lodge taking a , u activo part in its working , and practising those great principles wbioh Masonry inculcates . Although tbe fact was well known to most of them , he would remind them that its origin was Bhrouded in darkness , its history not being very dear . Ho could ,

however , assert with coufilonco that it was the moat ancient institution iu the world , and being vonerablo in its age , beneficial in its designs , and practical in its oharity , wiso and good man of all denominations had joined their ranks . In responding , Bro . Clnpman said ho felt deeply indebted to Bro . Past Master Melling for his explanation of the principles of FreemasoDry . no assured tho brethren that be wonld endeavour to

carry into practice those principles in such a manner as to gain the esteem of every member of the Lodge . Bro . Katz said he was very highly impressed with Fr ; eniasonry so far , and with regard to tho brethren of the Lodge he was astonished to fiud himself so much at home , considering that to many of them he was a perfoct stranger . Ho wonld take especial care that no act of his should cause them to regret that they had accepted him a 3 one of their members .

WILLIAM SHURMUR LODGE , No . 2374 . "VTOTHING could have better exemplified the popularity of this - * Lodge , which ranks amongst the most numerous in point ot membership in the kiugdom , than the large assemblage of Masons whioh gathered at the Royal Forest Hotel , Chingford , on the 19 th

mat ., to take part in tbe installation festival . It must have been a proud moment for Bro . William Shurmur P . M . P . P . G . T ., when ho surveyed the scene and remembered that the Lodge whioh is named after him had achieved such distinction . From a philanthropio point of view it may be stated that the Lodge ia a Pafcron of

the Royal Mnsonio Benovolent Institution and also Vice-President of the Royal Masouio Iuftitntion for Boys , while it wus mantionod during the evening that a large sum wonld bs nised to qualify the Lodge for a similar position with regard to tho Institution for Girls , At the last oloetior . 3 over a thousand proxies were sent by this Lodge to the Frovinoial Charity Conunittoe .

Tho Worshipful Master ( Bro . H . Ffronoil Bromhead P . P . G . S . W . ) took tbe chair soon after throo o ' clock , when it was seen that every Lodge in tho Province of Essox was represented , whilo so mnny Metropolitan Masters wero present that the Lodge-room was quickly filled , and as the brethren coutinued to arrive the largo apartment wns filled to its utmost limit . the sublime degree , and Bro . Jenkinson passed as a Fellow Craft . Tho ballot having proved favourable for Mr . Frederick Inch , he wa 3 regularly initiated into the mysteries and privileges of the Order . By this time the Lodge-room became inconveniently crowded and uncomfortably warm , and as several members were unable to obtain admission , the brethren adjourned to the Paviiiou , where the

installation ceremony took place . Bro . Nathaniel Fortoscue , CO ., having been unanimously elected a ? tho new W . M ., was presented by the Director of Ceremonies and duly signified hia compliance with the anoient regulations . A Board of Installed Miistsr ? , numbering no leas than sixty-seven member ? , was then formed , and Bro . ForteBoue was inducted into tho chair by his predecessor . Having iuvested

Tha several addresses were subsequently delivered by Bro . Bromhead in a insnuer that met

with the hearty approval cf the brethren . Bro . MftcColla was elected to serve as representative of the Lodgo on tha Essex Charity Committee . Bro . Nathaniel Forteseao W . M . was « pp : inted us a Steward to represent tho Lodgo at the nest festival of tho M'jsonio School for Girl ? , and a sum of ono hundred guineas was votod by the brethren to hoad tha list .

In returning thanksior the appointment , Bro . Foitosouo announced his intention of giving a personal donation of a hundred gnineaa also to the Charity . The Treasurer was authorised to draw another ohequo for a hundred guineas from tbo Lodge funds as a subscription to Bro . Bromhead ' s list for the Royal Masonio Institution for Boy 0 . As may be imagined from the above grants tho bala- co sheet pressntad a satisfactory condition . An initiate was proposed for the

nezfc masting . Bro . Bromhead was presented with the handsome Lodgo jowol , and the Lodge was then adjourned until the merry month of May . The banquot was served iu tbe great hall , and waa attended by over two hundred brethren . An oxoollent programmo of music was provided by Bro . T . H . Lloyd , assisted by Madamo Kelly , Miss M . Conyers , and Bro . Will Edwards , which interspersed the speechea in a very agreeable manner .

In returning thanksior the appointment , Bro . Foitosouo announced his intention of giving a personal donation of a hundred gnineaa also to the Charity . The Treasurer was authorised to draw another ohequo for a hundred guineas from tbo Lodge funds as a subscription to Bro . Bromhead ' s list for the Royal Masonio Institution for Boy 0 .
