" This day , at a quarter past twelve o ' clock , his Royal Highness , Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex , uncle to her most gracious Majesty , departed this life , at Kensington Palace , to the great grief of her Majesty , and of all the royal family . LETTER TO THE LORD MAYOR . | The following announcement of the melancholy event was also made j to the Lord Mayor , in the afternoon , by Sir James Graham , and a copy 1 was immediately afterwards placarded at the Mansion-house : — I ' Whitehall , April 21 . j
" My Lord , —It is ivith great concern that I acquaint your Lordship ivith the death of his Royal Highness the DUKE OF SUSSEX , which tooh place at § Kensington Palace this day , at a quarter past twelve o ' cloch . I request that 9 your Lordship will give the directions , usual on such occasions , for tolling the great bell of St . The great bell of St . Paul's cathedral was consequently tolled on the § afternoon of Friday , from a quarter before four o ' clock till a quarter 1 before five . § S Orders were immediately issued for the closing of the different theatres . The following was posted at Drury-lane : —
" Lord Chamherlain ' s Office , Friday , April 21 . " In consequence of the death of his Royal Highness tbe Duke of Sussex , the Lord Chamberlain requires that the Theatre Royal Drurylane be closed this evening and on the evening of the funeral . " "April 22 .
" Notice is hereby given , that tlie Levee intended to he held by his Royal Highness Prince Albert , at St . James ' s Palace , on Wednesday next , | is postponed to Wednesday , the 17 th of May , at two o ' clock . "
i Orders for the Court going into Mourning on Sunday , the 23 rd inst ., for his late Royal Highness the Du / te of Sussex , uncle of Her Majesty . I " The ladies to wear black silk , fringed or plain linen , white gloves , necklaces and ear-rings , black or white shoes , fans and tippets . " The gentlemen to wear black , full-trimmed , fringed or plain linen , black swords and buckles .
