them that day , but found it impossible , ana had sent tliem a telegram from Brighton , wishing the M . E . Z . and companions a picasant evening , and they were very glad to know that he was recovering , and would soon be with them again . Their M . E . Z . had immediately sent a return telegram to fnmn Butter to tell him that exactly as the clock struck

nine they would all rise and drink his ( Comp . Butter ' s ) health in bumpers , and as it was now just on the stroke of nine , he asked them to stand up and drink the toast heartily . This was done , the room ringing with the cheering of the companions as they wished a speedy recovery to their

beloved and suffering companion and brother . Comp . Col . Hughes , ALP ., responded for Comp . Butter , and said he felt it a great honour to be allowed to respond for an absent friend ' and esteemed companion like Comp . Butter , because it would certainly would add to his pleasure and satisfaction when he knew that , although absent

himself , there were among the companions present some one to respond for him ; and thank the companions for their kindness . He had heard it said in the Army that one of the greatest incentives to deeds of valour was the thought "What will they say in England ? " and he believed it would he a great comfort to Comp . Butter to know that they

sympathised with him in his trouble , and wished him a speedy and safe recovery ; in fact , they would knock the bottom out of Masonry altogether if the ) ' did not solace a brother in his distress , as well as rejoice with him in his prosperity . Now , with regard to the gathering that night , it was one of the choicest things in Masonry to meet such

friends as he saw round him . He was sure that amongst those present were the best and choicest friends that during a not uneventful life he ever had confidence in . He felt sure that the feeling of Comp . Butter was that it was the happiest moments in his life to be with them , and one of his deepest regrets not to be with them ; and it would be a great

comfort to him to know that amid these festivities they had not forgotten him , and that his many splendid qualities were admitted and acknowledged by every one present . Comp . Haynes having spoken as to the excellent qualities of Comp . Butler both as a man and a Mason , Gimp . White , in returning thanks for "The Visitors , "

spoke highly of the hospitable reception afforded him and every visitor present , but neither he nor those who knew the I attison Chapter were surprised at it . It was now 15 years since he first had the honour of visiting the chapter , and bad always been well received . He asked them to return the compliment by visiting the Francis White Chapter at Romrord , and promised those who did so a hearty reception .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

A Quarterly Court of Subscribers to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was held on Saturday last at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall , P . G . T ., Treasurer of the Institution , was in the chair . There were also present Bros . George Powell , J . J . Cumberland , Herbert Dicketts , James Brett , C . H .

Webb , Charles G . Hill , H . Massey , W . M . Bywater , Col . F . Gadsden , J . Terry , Arthur E . Glachvell , and F . R . W . Hedges ( Secretary ) . After the reading and confirmation of the minutes of the meeting of 27 th April , and the reading of the minutes of the Special Court of 30 th May , and summaries of minutes of General Committees for

information , the Court agreed to the recommendation of the General Committee , that the 32 eligible candidates remaining from the last election , together with the 17 whose petitions have been since approved , be placed upon the list for the October Election , and that nine vacancies , caused by girls leaving the School , be declared .

On the motion of Bro . HERBERT DICKETTS , Vice President , seconded by Bro . C . H . WEBB , the following alterations were made in the laws of the Institution : In Law 35 , omit words " and audit . " In the first heading , on page 32 , omit the words " and audit . "

In Law 47 , in first line , substitute " twelve" for " nine . " In third and fourth lines , after thc word " finance , " omit words " and audit . " In sixth line , substitute " three " for '' two . " In Law 49 , after word " meet" in first line , omit words '' in the months of January , April , July , and

October , and substitute " monthly , or oftener , if necessary . " After word " payment , " in sixth line , omit all up to the word " report , " in the twelfth line . Add , as a fresh paragraph , headed "Audit , " "The accounts of the Institution shall be annually audited

by a chartered accountant , to be elected annuall y by the General Committee at the meeting in Alav . " In Law 79 , add , after word "Trustees , " " and be annually examined by the accountant . " On the suggestion of Bro . J AMES TERRY , the words " and audit " occurring in Law 43 , were also struck

out . With reference to the new paragraph respecting the auditing of the accounts b y a chartered accountant . Bro . J . S . CUMBERLAND said he hoped the auditors would go through the accounts quarterly , as well as yearly . Perhaps they might not be able to examine

them mouthy . If there were errors , they would be more easily discovered in a a tri-monthl y investigation than in a yearly . Bro . HEDGES said it was in contemplation that there should be a quarterly examination . Bro . HERBERT DICKETTS said the accounts would be

audited monthly . Bro . CUMBERLAND observed that he did not mean examined b y the auditors—he meant audited b y the chartered accountant . He wanted that the accountant should go through the accounts quarterly , as well as annually .

Bro . C H . WEBB said that , anyhow , the chartered accountant would be responsible . Bro . H . B . MARSHALL intimated that they might now carry these resolutions , and then afterwards make an additional regulation . Bro . CUMBERLAND moved that the auditor go through

the accounts quarterly , and once a year make out . a balance sheet , and examine the documents of tbe Institution . Bro . H . B . MARSHALL : And securities . Bro . CUMBERLAND : Yes , whatever is in the bank

concerning the monetary affairs of the Institution . Bro . DICKETTS : In Law 79 it says : — "All deeds and securities shall be deposited for safe custody with the bankers of the Institution in the names of the trustees , " then add to that , " and annually examined by the accountant . "

The motion having been seconded , was carried , and a vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting . - « Mr . and Mrs . Gladstone celebrated their golden wedding on 'Thursday , the 25 th ult . Among- the telegrams and letters of congratulation received by the right honourable

gentleman were messages from the Queen , the Prince of Wales , and the King of the Belgians ; and among the presents were a portrait of Mr . Gladstone by Sir John Millais , presented by the lady members of the liberal party ; a gold inkstand from the Prince and Princess of Wales ; a goldheaded Malacca cane from thc Earl of Rosebery , & c .
