upon the foundation then laid , there will be raised an equally successful festival next year , so that in time the perfect superstructure may be completed in a truly Masonic manner . It gives me great p leasure to meet upon the invitation of the Humber Lodo-e , a lodge which is not only the largest in this province , but also one of the most numerous in the kingdom , possessing ample funds , a handsome hall , and affording its members every facility for pursuing the study of the Craft under

the most favourable auspices ; the other lodges in the town , I understand , are also in a sound and healthy condition , the junior one has recently purchased a building , now in course of conversion , for a Masonic Hall . We may , therefore , congratulate our Hull brethren upon their state of prosperity , which we trust will enabje them to continue and improve the charitable efforts which they have so worthily made in the past . I must now heartily thank the Master and brethren of the Humber Lodge for their hospitality and for the excellent arrangements they have

made for the entertainment of Provincial Grand Lodge ; I hope the brethren will all attend the banquet which has been specially arranged to suit the convenience of those who have come from a distance . Invitations were last year received from the Camelodiinum and Falcon Lodges , and both those lodges have paid us the compliment of repeating them this year , whilst cordially thanking the Thirsk brethren for their kindness , I feel that I must accept the prior invitation and shall hope to meet the brethren next year at Malton .

The Masonic Anthem " Hail Masonry " was sung in solo by Bro . Jos . Tood , P . P . G . W ., and in full chorus by the brethren , accompanied by the organ . The Prov . Grand Lodge was then closed . Subsequently a large number of the officers and brethren sat down to a banquet in the Lecture Hall of the Public Rooms . The Prov . G . M . ( Lord Zetland ) , presided , and after the repast , the customary loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair .

The P . G . M . of West Yorkshire , Bro . T . W . TEW , submitted the toast of " The Rig ht Hon . the Earl of Zetland , R . W . Grand Master of North and East Yorkshire . " For 15 years Lord Zetland had presided over the Masonic destinies of that most historic province , which had been ever loyal to the Throne , to the famil y of Zetland , and which would ever be loyal to the present Grand Master of the Province . Nothing had given those from West Yorkshire greater pleasure than

to be present at the Grand Lodge , and to echo in every respect the noble and becoming sentiments expressed in the address which Lord Zetland had been graciously p leased to receive . He was present to show how beloved Lord Zetland was to those in West Yorkshire , and to add his feeling testimony to the joy they all felt at his lordship ' s patriotism in accepting the important office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland , and that the choice of her Most Gracious Majesty had fallen upon so

popular an English nobleman , and noble English gentleman . He hoped that when his term of office had expired , Lord Zetland would return to his beloved province , with health and strength to preside over it with that ability which had distinguished him in the past . He wished his lordship God-speed in the arduous duties he was about to undertake , and he doubted not that so popular a Yorkshireman would make their friends in Ireland more peaceable subjects to law and order than they had ever been before .

Lord ZETLAND , in replying to the toast , thanked those present for the exceedingly kind manner in which it had been proposed and received . The proposer of thc toast had referred to that high office he had accepted in her Majesty ' s present Government . He could assure them that hc should thoroughly appreciate the honourable position of being her Majesty ' s representative in Ireland , and he could only repeat what he had said when he was presented that afternoon with that

magnificent address , and when it became his duty to go across the Channel , he would endeavour to do his duty in Ireland as became a Britain and a Yorkshirecnan . He would feel one great regret in going to Ireland , and that was that for a time possibly he should have to sever the connection which had now existed for 15 years between the Province of North and East Yorkshire and himself , so far as to render it impossible for him to reside so continuously within the province as he had hitherto

done . That regret , however , was alleviated very much by his feeling that he should not only enjoy the sympathy of the Freemasons of the province , but that , under the guidance of the D . P . G . M . the interests of Freemasonry would continue to flourish , and the interests of Freemasonry would be as carefully guarded b y the D . P . G . M . as if hc himself were among them . In conclusion , his lordship proposed " The Health of the Prov . G . M . of West Yorkshire , Bro . Tew . "

Bro . TEW , P . G . M . West Yorkshire , in responding to the toast , assured those present that his brethren in West Yorkshire were only too anxious to co-operate with North and East Yorkshire in everything that was for thc benefit of

Freemasonry . Bro . J . TODD , P . P . S . G . W ., submitted "The Health of Bro . Lieut .-Col . the Hon . W . T . Orde-Powlett , P . G . W ., D . P . G . M . " He said they would certainl y feel the loss of the Provincial Grand Master very much ; but , from the well-known interest which Bro . Orde-Powlett had manifested in the Craft ever since he was a member of the Provincial Grand Lodge , they all felt sure that the interests of the province would not suffer in his hands .

Bro . Lieut .-Col . ORDE-POWLETT , D . P . G . M ., replied , and said he would try , with the help of his officers , to undertake his duty to the best of his skill and abilit y . It had given him very great pleasure to come to Hull ; it always did , for Freemasonry was increasing in popularity in Hull , and in the right way . They should not ask men to become Masons for the sake of filling lodges , but they should ask good and true men to join the Craft . It was only by electing proper people that they could expect Freemasonry to flourish . It was now more than 20 years since

the Provincial Grand Lodge assembled under the banner of the Humber Lodge , which was , he believed , the senior lodge of the province , and which set a good example in everything it undertook . In Hull a number of lodges had sprung up round about the Humber ; they were all most anxious to do their duty , and he thought they had succeeded uncommonly well . He returned thanks for the way in which the toast had been received , and proposed " The Newly-appointed Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge . " He advised the newly-appointed officers to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors , and they would be successful .

The toast was replied to by Bro . J , A . MALCOLMSO ** , P . S . G . W ., who said he and his fellow officers would do their duty to the best of their ability . They had no doubt but that Masonry would go on well during his lordshi p ' s temporary absence .

Lord ZETLAND proposed "The Health of the W . M . of the Humber Lodge , " and said that the arrangements for the reception of the Provincial Grand Lod ge had been most excellent , while they had been entertained in a very hospitable manner , and in away of which any town in the country mi ght be proud . Bro . J . RUTTER , W . M . 57 , responded , and said if those who were present were pleased , it had gratified the brethren of the Humber Lodge . The other toasts were " The Visiting Brethren " and " The Masonic Charities . " The proceedings were interspersed with harmony .

On the motion of the P . G . M ., duly seconded , it was resolved that Prov . by-law No . 6 , should be amended b y the addition of a clause to the effect that the Prov . G . Secretary should receive an honorarium for his services at the rate of £ 1 5 s . per annum for each lodge in the province , in addition to his expenses incurred in the discharge of his duties . On the motion of Bro . T . S . CARTER , P . M . and Sec . 403 , P . P . G . W ., it was resolved that the sum of ^ 21 should be granted from the funds of Prov . G . Lodge , to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , to be placed on the list of Bro . John E . Dawson , P . D . P . G . M .

On the motion of Bro . J AMES TERRY , P . P . J . G . W ., it was resolved that the sum of . £ 10 should be granted to the Watford Lodge , No . 404 , towards defraying the expense of entertaining Prov . G . Lodge , and a further sum of . £ 10 was , on the motion of Bro . C . E . KEYSER , P . P . G . W ., voted to the Watford District Cottage Hospital . A motion that ^ 20 be granted to the Watford Public Library having been rejected , it was resolved that the funds of Prov . G . Lodge be transferred to the names of the Prov . G . Master , Dep . P . G . M ., and P . G . Treas ., and also that . £ 30 be invested in Consols .

On the motion of the PROV . G . SECRETARY , it was resolved "That the publication of the Provincial Calendar be continued . " Prov . G .
