move all unpleasantness , by answering the question fairly and straightforwardly—did he or did he not communicate with the General , and did the General refuse to allow the military brethren to walk in the procession ? Perhaps if Colonel Elliott is informed that he has the credit of

having himself excluded the brethren , he will give the explanation more readily . Will he also explain why it was that they were positively refused entree into the hall , after a distinct understanding that they should be admitted on presenting themselves at the doors . Look at the matter as

we will , in the absence of any satisfactory explanation , I fear only one conclusion can be come to , viz ., that from the very first there was a determination to exclude our military brothers from all part in the demonstration .

Since writing the above I have seen the letters from Bro . Col . Elliot and J . E . Curteis , and they certainly are rather remarkable productions . In a previous communication , Bro . Hughan made an appeal to Colonel Elliott to clear up the matter by stating to whom he made his

application , and what the result of it was . What followed ? Why , protestations from several correspondents , Col . Elliott included , that , as a soldier , the gallant Colonel was prohibited by - the Queen ' s Regulations from making known what had transpired . Under these

circumstances no one , of course , had any right to expect Col . Elliott to commit a breach of discipline , and he was justified , supposing that there had been any communication between him and the General , in refusing to make it known .

The defence in such a case , made by himself , and by his friends on his behalf , was a good one , but after all these anxious efforts to shelter him behind the Queen ' s Regulations , it is now proved by Bro . Col . Elliott ' s own admission , that under no circumstances whatever could he

have been guilty of the slightest violation of military law , simply because there was positively nothing to reveal . He made no application to the General , and , therefore , received no refusal . These are his own words . But this is not all .

In his great desire to act as the champion of Colonel Elliott , Bro . Curteis , as it appears to me , has tumbled headlong into a pit of his own digging . When individuals undertake to stand by each other in a difficulty they should take care to be agreed as to the facts , and to make

themselves correctly acquainted with the circumstances of the case . I fear Bro , Curteis has overlooked this . Bro . Hughan has informed us that the Committee left the military part of the programme to Col . Elliott , but Bro . Curteis has the hardihood to do that which Bro . Elliott does

not himself venture to do , viz ., to take exception to Bro . Hughan ' s statement . Again , Colonel Elliott , replying to Bro . Hughan , says he made no application to the General , and could not , therefore , have been met with a negative . It is not pretended that anyone else went to the

General , and yet Mr . Curteis , above all others , happens to know that the General" had an idea in his head " that the Masonic procession came under the Queen ' s Regulations . It is unpleasant to say so , but I cannot help thinking that the wish was father to the thought . Why

should the General go out of his way to volunteer an opinion upon a matter on which he was never consulted ? Perhaps Bro . Curteis , who is so anxious for the truth , will explain these inconsistencies , and endeavour to extricate himself from the " maze " into which he has so unwittingly walked . I am afraid I cannot help him .

But apart from this , we may now take it as an admitted fact that the General was not asked at all for his permission to allow the military brethren to walk in the procession , and I think you will agree with me , sir , that the sin of omission is quite as great as the , at first supposed , sin ol commission .

Believe me to be . Dear Sir and Brother , Yours fraternally , C . M . 1205 .
