MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

A contribution was voted on the 26 th ult ., by the Sovereign Sanctuary , Ancient and Primitive Rite of Masonry , to the " Gould Testimonial Fund , " with special mention of the great services rendered to Craft Masonry by his recent Commentary upon the "Regius MS . "

The regular monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at Freemasons' Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) at the hour of four p . m . The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold its next monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday next , the 10 th instant , at four p . m .

A Grand Lodge of _ theJ ? gyal Order of Scotland , of which Order Bro . D . Murray ' Lyon is Secretary , was held at Freemasons' Hall on Thursday , when the office-bearers for the ensuing year were elected . A sum of £ 300 was voted by the Corporation of London on Thursday , the 27 th ult , towards decorating the route taken by the Shah on his visit to the Guildhall on Wednesday .

By the permission of Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead a concert was given in the Egyptian Hall of the Mansion House on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., in aid of the Metropolitan Hospital Sunday Fund , the South London Musical Club taking a very effective part in the programme .

Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., was the 51 st anniversary of the Oueen's Coronation , and the occasion was celebrated at Woolwich Arsenal and the various dockyards by closing the establishments for the day , and at Windsor and in London by the firing of the usual salutes .

Prince George of Wales has fixed Thursday , the iSth inst ., at four o'clock , for laying the foundation stone of the New Branch Hospital of the Seamen ' s Hospital Society , at the Royal Albert Docks , instead of the date previously announced .

The annual conversazione of the Society of Arts took place on Friday evening- at the South Kensington Museum . In the absence of the President , the Duke of Abercorn , through illness , the company was received by Sir Frederick Bramwell and Sir Philip Cunliffe Owen . The attendance was very large .

Bro . Sir John Stainer , Professor of Music at Oxford University , was born in 1 S 40 , and is the son of a London schoolmaster . He became first a choir boy at St . Paul ' s , then Organist at St . Benedict ' s , Paul ' s Wharf ( at the age of 14 ) , and in 1 S 72 Organist at St . Paul's Cathedral , a post he resigned last year .

By Lady Ashburton's permission , the third annual meeting of the Universal Mercy Band Movement ( established to promote kindness to all human and dumb creatures ) was held on Saturday at Kent House , Knightsbridge , when addresses were given by Mr . F . D . Mocatta , Mr . E . Clifford , Lady Ashburton , and others .

The Prince of Wales has appointed Wednesday , the 24 th instant , as the day when he will lay the memorial-stone of the new Samaritan Free Hospital which is in course of erection in the Marylebone-road . His Royal Highness ^ will be accompanied on the occasion by the Princess of Wales .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead , accompanied by the Lady Mayoress , will visit the Congregational School , Caterham Valley , to-morrow ( Saturday ) , for the purpose of opening the Swimming Bath and Technical School , which have been erected by the "Old Boys" as a memorial of the interest they still continue to take in the institution .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead has received a letter from the Prince of Wales , as Acting President of the Royal Agricultural Society of England , expressing the thanks of the Society to his lordship and the Mansion House Committee for the handsome contribution made by London towards augmenting the prize list at the great show at Windsor last week .

On Thursday , the 27 th ult ., the children of the Dorchester Union were treated to an excursion to West Bay and spent a very pleasant day . The expense of the trip was borne by the brethren of " the Dorchester Lodge from a special collection made for the purpose at the annual banquet in January . The youngsters , who were accompanied by the

master and matron , were provided with a good dinner and tea , besides being otherwise refreshed with ginger beer , sweets , & c . Bathing was largely indulged in , and altogether , thanks partly " to the very favourable weather , the trip was one which will not soon be forgotten . Dorchester was safely reached at eight o ' clock .

The S 31 CI Annual Festival of the Licensed Victuallers Schools took place at the Crystal Palace on Tuesday , and in the midst of the proceedings , the children ( boys and girls ) , headed by their band , marched into the dining-room , and filing round , amidst deafening applause , filled up the hitherto vacant seats in the orchestra , the children presenting the appearance of health and comfort . As usual on these

occasions , a very large company sat down to dinner , under the presidency of Mr . T . J . Mann ( of the firm of Mann , Crossman , and Paulin ) . The toast of the evening , " Prosperity to the Licensed Victuallers' School , " was submitted by the Chairman , who traced its history from its foundation in 1 S 07 . Its steady progress was dilated on ,

commencing with a few children , till it now had over 250 in the schools ; and he had no hesitation in saying that it was one of the best-managed institutions of tbe kind to be found in this country . Mr . E . Grimwood announced the list of subscriptions to be £ 7212 . With the exception of Jubilee year , when special effort was made , this is the ^ largest sum ever announced at the festival .

The annual Provincial Grand Lodge of Berks and Bucks will be held on Thursday next , at Reading . The Andrew Chapter of Instruction will hold its next meeting at the Windsor Castle Hotel , Hammersmith , on Wednesday , the 10 th inst ., at 8 o ' clock . The meetings of the St . Ambrose Lodge of Instruction are adjourned until September 2 nd next , when the night for working the Fifteen Sections will be fixed .

PRINCESS s THEATRE . —The "Still Alarm " will be revived at this theatre for a fortnight commencing on Monday week , the 15 th inst ., to be followed by the celebrated drama " Proof , " for which a very powerful cast is engaged . The Yeomen of the Guard , under the command of their Captain , Bro . the Earl of Limerick , underwent their annual inspection on Friday , the 20 th ult ., the inspecting- officer being- Field-Marshal Lord Napier of Magdala , who expressed himself highly gratified with their appearance .

The Master of the Fanmakers' Company and Mrs . A . G . Hennell entertained Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress , and numerous other guests , at a banquet held on the 2 Sth ult ., in the Hall of the Drapers' Company . In the course oi the evening fans wei-e presented to the Lady Mayoress and Mrs . Newton , wife of Bro . Sheriff Newton .

The Queen visited the Royal Agricultural Show 111 Windsor Great Park on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., being accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , and attended by the Lords and Ladies in Waiting of her Court . At the conclusion of her visit the Queen returned to the Castle . The visits were repeated on the following days .

The next quarterly convocation of the Metropolitan College of Rosicrucians is convened for Thursday , July 1 ith , at 5 . 30 p . m . precisely , when , after the ordinary business is transacted , Dr . Woodman , the S . M ., will read a paper on the " Ten Hebrew Sephirct'i or Emanations of the Diety . " The banquet will be served at the Holborn Restaurant at 7 . 30 p . m . According to the Sheffield Telegraph , the Sheffield Masons

are forming a local Charity , as distinguished from the great Masonic Charities in London . The objects are to assist poor Freemasons or their wives , and to educate or help their infant children . The funds will be raised by subscriptions or donations from Sheffield lodges , chapters , and other-Masonic bodies , and from Freemasons residing" in Sheffield . Subscribers are to have one vote for the current year for every ios . subscribed by them .

At the last meeting- of the Teachers' Provident Society on Friday , the 2 Sth ult ., Bro . C Woods , 1 SG 9 , Asst . Soj . 1275 , was elected Chairman of the Org-anisation Committee . The programme of the Universal Mercy Band Movement is a large one , and may to some appear Utopian , but the standard aimed at is not too high , and the aid that a powerful organisation can give to the movement will help towards its realisation . The report of the last annual meeting- on the 20 th

ult . is a very satisfactory one . There are over 113 , 000 members in Great Britain who have pledged themselves tc try ( hourly and daily ) to be kind , just , and merciful to all human and dumb creatures . The general secretary is Rev . Thomas Timmins , 24 , Shardeloes-road , New Cross , S . E .

The annual Masonic rifle match took place at Caterham , on Thursday , the 19 th ult . The competing teams were London Rifle Brigade , Oueen ' s Westminster Volunteers , and South Middlesex . The 1 st Surrey were a couple short , and therefore did not compete . The conditions were , seven shots at 200 , 500 , and 600 ; teams of eight . The Queen ' s won the match with 610 , beating the City corps by 39 , the South Middlesex scoring 509 . After the match the teams dined together at the Railway Hotel .

His Majesty and chief officers of State being in some of the Oueen ' s

carriages . On Tuesday he visited the Queen at Windsor Castle , and on Wednesday was received at the Guildhall by Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead and the corporation , the day closing with a State Ball at Buckingham Palace . On Thursday , the Prince and Princess of Wales gave a garden party in honour of our Imperial visitor , the Oueen and Court coming

up to town from Windsor in order to be present . In addition , his Majesty has visited the Royal Italian Opera , Covent Garden , for which the Manager , Bro . Augustus Harris , had re-arranged for the occasion , and the Persian Ambassador ' s at Holland Park , and to-morrow ( Saturday ) , he will be at the Crystal Palace ; so that the Londoner has enough on his hands in the way of sightseeing just now .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury

of our own working people , so true is it that "evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT .

Lord Bute lias offered to give £ 1000 towards the Chair of Engineering in University College , Cardiff , provided that the ) - can raise sufficient funds from the landlords and land owners in the district to enable them to avail themselves of the generous offer of the Drapers' Company .

Lord Mayor Whitehead has received a letter from the Prince of Wales , as Acting President of the Royal Agricultural Society of England , expressing the thanks of the Society to his lordship and the Mansion House Committee for the handsome contribution made by London towards augmenting the prize list at the great show at Windsor last week .

On Thursday , the 27 th ult ., the children of the Dorchester Union were treated to an excursion to West Bay and spent a very pleasant day . The expense of the trip was borne by the brethren of " the Dorchester Lodge from a special collection made for the purpose at the annual banquet in January . The youngsters , who were accompanied by the

master and matron , were provided with a good dinner and tea , besides being otherwise refreshed with ginger beer , sweets , & c . Bathing was largely indulged in , and altogether , thanks partly " to the very favourable weather , the trip was one which will not soon be forgotten . Dorchester was safely reached at eight o ' clock .

The S 31 CI Annual Festival of the Licensed Victuallers Schools took place at the Crystal Palace on Tuesday , and in the midst of the proceedings , the children ( boys and girls ) , headed by their band , marched into the dining-room , and filing round , amidst deafening applause , filled up the hitherto vacant seats in the orchestra , the children presenting the appearance of health and comfort . As usual on these

occasions , a very large company sat down to dinner , under the presidency of Mr . T . J . Mann ( of the firm of Mann , Crossman , and Paulin ) . The toast of the evening , " Prosperity to the Licensed Victuallers' School , " was submitted by the Chairman , who traced its history from its foundation in 1 S 07 . Its steady progress was dilated on ,

commencing with a few children , till it now had over 250 in the schools ; and he had no hesitation in saying that it was one of the best-managed institutions of tbe kind to be found in this country . Mr . E . Grimwood announced the list of subscriptions to be £ 7212 . With the exception of Jubilee year , when special effort was made , this is the ^ largest sum ever announced at the festival .

The annual Provincial Grand Lodge of Berks and Bucks will be held on Thursday next , at Reading . The Queen visited the Royal Agricultural Show 111 Windsor Great Park on Thursday , the 27 th ult ., being accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , and attended by the Lords and Ladies in Waiting of her Court .
