in 1887 and 1886 it was £ 280 and £ 413 respectively . However , with such members as Bro . Thos R . Arter , who has assisted at all the Festivals of the last two years , Bro . Godson , who has taken part in five , and Bro . Alderman Williamson , who has acted at four , it is not to be wondered at that Worcestershire should do so well . YORKSHIRE ( WEST ) ,

which , with its 73 lodges , brings up the rear of the Provincial Returns , had 4 6 \ Stewards , of whom two were Unattached , while the remainder acted on behalf , of I 21 lodges , the sum total resulting from their exertions being £ 770 . In February , the I Returns to the Benevolent Institution reached £ 415 , and in May , the Girls' School received £ 225 15 s ., the general result for the whole year being £ 1410 15 s . Last ,

year it raised £ 3362 8 s ., ot which the Girls' Centenary absorbed £ 2702 8 s ., and in ' 1887 , the total stood still hig her at £ 3 800 , including the two Perpetual Presenta- tions to the Widows' Fund of the Benevolent Institution . In the 12 preceding . years it subscribed £ 24 , 566 , and if to this we add the contributions of 1887-9 , we i have a grand total for the whole 15 years , of , in round figures , £ 33 , 141 , giving an verage of upwards of £ 2200 per annum !

CONCLUDING REMARKS . I Three lists from abroad , amounting together to £ 52 10 s ., complete this portion I of the Returns , and thus enables us to bring our remarks to a close . Heavier lists would have been more welcome , and would have gone further in replenishing the exchequer of this Institution ; but the result , especiall y under the disheartening circumstances of the moment , has been hailed with satisfaction in all directions , and we must hope that in less exciting times the School will fare even better than it did on Wednesday .

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF MIDDLESEX .

A meeting of this Prov . G . Lodge was held at the Town Hall , Twickenham , on Saturday , the 29 th ult ., which will rank as one of the most successful held . There was a very large attendance of brethren , whose Provincial and Craft clothing , together with the handsome floral decorations , gave the Town Hall a brilliant appearance . Bro . Col . The PROV . G . MASTER then said a very pleasing duty devolved upon him—one that was usually brought before them—to propose that a sum of 15 guineas bu

voted to each of the three Masonic Institutions . These amounts were always voted with p leasure by the brethren , so that they mig ht benefit the Institutions in a small way , and he hoped that in the future they would be enabled to increase that amount . The motion was carried " nem . con . "

Bro . W . J . SPRATLING , P . P . G . Treas ., proposed " That a portion of the balance at the Bank be invested . " He said that the members of the Audit Committee were of opinion that something should be done , but thought it advisable that Provincial Grand Lodge should be consulted before any money was invested . He had no proposition to make as to what amount should be invested , but would leave it in their hands .

The DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER fully concurred , in the remarks of Bro . Spratling , as the money invested would enable them to give more to the Charities . He proposed that the sum of £ 350 should be invested in some good Preference Stock in the names of the Prov . Grand Master , Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and the Prov . Grand Secretary . Bro . Spratling accepted the Deputy Prov . G . Master ' s proposition , which was carried unanimously .

The DEPUTY PROV . GRAND MASTER next moved lhat for the future the Masonic Calendar for Middlesex be prepared and issued by the Prov . Grand Secretary at the primary cost of the Provincial Grand Lodge , and that all monies received from the sale of copies shall be placed to the credit of the funds of the Provincial Grand Lodge . " He said this subject had exercised their minds for some few years . They were aware that Bro . Lovegrove , with good intention , started a Calendar

which had been of great assistance to the rulers of the province , and he was sure had assisted the brethren who wished to learn something of the province . It was , however , felt that that Calendar was being published without authority , and as Bro . Lovegrove said he could not go on with it this year , Bros . Room and Lee kindly took upon themselves the duty of issuing it . It was more perfect than before and they hoped in future it would be quite perfect , but in order to have that , authority

must be granted by Provincial Grand Lodge . The cost was not great , especially if the lodges would take copies for the sake of their members and the Craft . He , therefore , proposed his resolution , and did not suppose there would be a loss of more than a few shillings . They would then have a Calendar they could rely upon , published under the authority of the Provincial Grand Lodge . They were much obliged to Bro . Lovegrove for starting the Calendar . Bro . PEARCE seconded the motion .

The P . G . M . supported the proposition , which was unanimously carried , as he considered it would be a benefit to the province . He thought that Bros . Room and Lee had shown how ably they would carry it out in the future . Hearty votes of thanks were accorded as follows : To Lady Freake for the use of the Hall ; to Bro . J . K . Gwyn , agent to the trustees of the late Sir C . Freake ,

for valuable assistance in the arrangements ; to Bro . W . Poupart for the handsome floral decorations ; to Bro . W . J . Porter , W . M . Sir Charles Bright Lodge , for loan of harmonium and carpet ; to the Royal Hanover Lodge for loan of furniture ; and to the vicar for the use of the church for a short service ; and to Bro . Coward , Org ., and the choir for their assistance .

The sum of five guineas was voted to the St . John ' s Hospital on the motion of the P . G . M .

Letters of apology for non-attendance were announced from the Grand Secre . tary , and many other distinguished brethren , and the Provincial Grand Lodge was closed . A short service was then held at the Parish Church , Twickenham , where a sermon was preached by Bro . Rev . Evan Jones , and a collection made for the funds of the St . John ' s Hospital .

The brethren subsequently enjoyed a substantial repast , provided by Bro . Mella , of the Greyhound Hotel , Hampton Court , and the usual toasts were afterwards heartily honoured . In giving " The Grand Officers , " the PROV . G . MASTER said there were many distinguished brethren with them that day who were worthy of their consideration , and worthy , in every possible way , of being received in the warmest manner

possible . There were now a large number of Grand Officers , not only in London , but all over the country , who did the greatest amount of good wherever they mig ht be , for they supervised the lodges , and set an example which was followed by the members of those lodges who kindly took the suggestions made by the G . Officers . There were many G . Officers with them that evening , but there was one who had served the office of Dep . Prov . G . Master of the Province of Middlesex , and

during the time they had the honour of his company with them , served the office with credit to himself and advantage to the Order . He referred to Bro . Sir Geo . Elliot , whom he was only too happy to see amongst them again , and to have the opportunity of introducing him to the brethren , who , he knew , would receive him with enthusiasm . He would have great pleasure in asking Bro . Sir Geo . Elliot to return thanks for the G . Officers .

Bro . Sir . GEORGE ELLIOT , Bart , M . P ., Prov . G . Master S . Wales ( East Div . ) , said it was a proud position to occupy to be called upon to respond to such a distinguished toast , but on the present occasion he would not do more than simply thank the brethren sincerel y for the handsome way in which they had received his name . He scarcely knew whether the reference made by the Prov . G . M . to his presence was a censure or not , because he had not attended for many years . He

had a pleasant and agreeable recollection of being somewhat instrumental , with some of the brethren he saw around him , in removing a lodge , which was now at Hampton Court , from Stratford-on-Avon . He congratulated Bro . Yates , who had been linked to them socially and intellectually for many years , upon his appointment as Prov . G . Warden . Bro . RAYMOND H . THRUPP D . P . G . M ., said he would next ask them to drink

, —what every brother in the Province of Middlesex considered a most important toast—that of their " Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart . " Old members of the province would know that this was a young province , comparatively speaking , but during the reign of their Provincial Grand Master it had increased by leaps and bounds , and would now compare favourably with any province in England and Wales . He believed it began with three lod and now

ges , they numbered 39 , so that they would see he was not exaggerating in saying th ; under the auspices of Sir Francis Burdett Masonry had increased wonderfully '" the province . It was surel y due to the careful direction of their Provincial Grand Master , who for years worked hard and steadil y in visiting the lodges and seeinL that the work was done properly and well , and that the Book of Constitutions was

carried out , and by his kind , courteous , and genial manner , Sir Francis had wo ^ the hearts and affections of all the brethren . With reference to a remark niad " by Bro . Sir G . Elliot as to Charity , he could say that any petition from a brothe r equiring assistance was always entertained favourably and kindly by the Charity Committee , and the balance-sheet would show that nearly £ 100 had been expended in this manner during the past year .
