Analysis Of The Returns.

ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .

The task of analysing long lists of figures and comparing their values with those of the figures that were presented on similar occasions in former years , is always more agreeable when they represent considerable amounts and assist in compiling a good round total . Not very long ago there were people sanguine enough to believe that the result of this year ' s Boys' Festival would turn £ 15 , 000 , and we cannot say they did not have fair grounds for their expectations . But the

Report of the Committee of Inquiry was presented at the Quarterly Court in April , and such a re-action set in that some even began to think the total would be little , if at all , greater than it was last year . But the brethren who had given their names to act as a Board of Stewards stuck to their guns manfully , and went on their way canvassing , and we flatter ourselves that a little judicious counsel from ourselves and others encouraged them in their more than usually arduous task , with the result that Bro . Binckes , as has been already chronicled , was able to proclaim to

the meeting at the Alexandra Palace , that the 335 brethren who had acted as Stewards had succeeded in obtaining subscriptions and donations amounting to £ 13 , 182 18 s ., with 24 lists still to be returned . Of this handsome sum the CHAIR - MAN raised £ 120 15 s . ; LONDON , including 30 Unattached Stewards , £ 6580 15 s . 6 d . ; and the Provinces and Foreign Stations together the sum of £ 6481 7 s . 6 d . ; the number of Stewards acting for the former being 153 ; and for the latter 181 . As regards the amount obtained from LONDON , and the 153 brethren who assisted in obtaining it , there were , as we have said , 30 Unattached , who contributed amongst them , so far as the lists had been received , £ 4 6 4 2 s ., while the other 123 brethren , representing 108 lodges , 5 R . A . chapters ' and the Committee Dinner Club , raised £ 6116 13 s . 6 d . The lists amounting to £ 100 and upwards were 15 in number , and were headed b y that of Bro . George Emblin , of the Lodge of Justice , No . 147 , who compiled the splendid total of

£ 3 6 7 IOS ., Bro . George Gardner , of the Chiswick Lodge , No . 2012 , being a good second with £ 347 . These lists , if we except the Girls' Centenary Festival from the comparison , are far and away the best that have been returned b y London brethren for many a day , and we congratulate these Stewards on having obtained totals of which not only they themselves , but also the lodges they represent , have every reason also to be proud . The third in order is Bro . A . P . Reeling ' s list , as Steward for the

Mizpah Lodge , No . 1671 , amounting to £ 176 8 s . ; and then close together will be found those of Bro . Herbert Hooper , Unity Lodge , No . 18 3 , £ 159 12 s ., and Bro . George Haller , Prosperity Lodge , No . 65 , and Bro . George Reynolds , of the Covent Garden Lodge , No . 1614 , each of which amounted to £ 157 ios . Bro . E . B . Cox , of the City of Westminster Lodge , No . 1563 , compiled the excellent total of £ 137 2 s ., and was followed very closely by Bros . James P . Fitzgerald , of the Derb y Allcroft Lodge , No . 2168 , with £ 13038 . Bro . E . Austin , of the Creaton Lodge , No .

1791 , was rewarded for his exertions with a list of £ 126 , while our excellent Bro . A . A . Pendlebury , the Assistant Grand Secretary , who found time in the midst of his official duties to represent the Victoria Lodge , No . 1056 , had the satisfaction of handing in subscriptions amounting to £ 114 14 s . 6 d . Bro . J . H . de Ricci , of the Friends in Council Lodge , No . 13 S 3 , was close at Bro . Pendlebury ' s heels with £ 111 6 s ., the remaining three-figure Returns being the joint list of Bros .

Horace Slade and Eliab Rogen , who acted for the Peace and Harmony Ladge , No . 60 , and obtained a total of £ 105 , and Bro . C . E . Keyser , of the Lodge of Antiquity , No . 2 , and Bro . H . O . Mordaunt , of the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 90 , who both obtained £ 101 17 s . There were , in addition , many good lists , such as those of Bro . T . B . Daniell , Merchant Navy Lodge , No . 7 81 , for £ 8 9 5 s . ; Bro . T . H . Johnson , Kilburn Lodge , No . 1608 , for £ 90 15 s . 6 d . ; Bro . Sir George D . Harris , Canterbury Lodge , No . 16 35 , for £ 83 ; Bro . H . Massey , Gallery Lodge , No . 1928 , for

1928 , for
