'The lodge was opened in the usual manner at 4 . 35 , and the minutes of thc emergency and last regular meetings read and confirmed . 1 lie annual balance-sheet , wjiich bore a very healthy appearance , was reported on by the Auditors , Bros . Geo . Yates and Wm . Byway , and adopted . Uro . S . D . McKcllen rose , and said , he could not let the present opportunity slip by without commenting in terms of
high praise on the carelul and painstaking manner in which during the past year Uro . A . li . Whittakcr had managed the alfairs of the lodge , which had resulted in clearing o ? f a debt of between thirty and forty pounds , and thc valuable services rendered to the W . M by their indefatigable Treasurer , Brc . Wm . Uostock , were , he felt sure , highly appreciated by the W . M . and every member of the ' lodge ; so much so , that Uro . McKcllen said he felt he should not be doing his duty unless he proposed a vote of thanks to liro . Uostock .
Ihe proposition was received with evident pleasure by the brethren , seconded , and carried unanimousl y . Bro . Uostock acknowledged the compliment paid him , and , in doing so , stated that in resigning his office as I reasurcr , he could do so now with the satisfactory feeling that , to an extent , he had been been instrumental in bringing about such a beneficial result . At this stage thc Installing Master , Bro . W . Uostock ,
took the chair , and Bro . W . 11 . Leigh , P . M ., thcS . W . ' s ; and the W . M . elect , Uro . Geo . Mclarlane , after being presented by the W . M ., was , with customary formalities , installed into the chair of K . S . Bro . A . B . Whittakcr , l . P . M ., then invested and addressed the newl y-appointed officers as follows : Bros . W . Brown , S . W . ; Henry Bracewell , J . W . ( by proxy ); W . II . Lei gh , P . M ., Treas .: C I'airbank , bee ; Geo . Yates , S . D . ; Win . Byway , J . D . Torrest
; ' V j- , I . G . j J . C Emerson , Win . Lyon , and Dunkerlcy , Stewards ; Win . Bostock , P . M ., D . of ( J . ; and Geo , Burrows , Tyler . Bro . 'Thos . Cavanah , P . M ., delivered thc address to the W . M . ; Bro . S . D . McKcllen to the Wardens ; and Bro . Win . Bostock , P . M ., to the brethren . The ceremony being concluded and " Hearty good . wishes" expressed by the visitors , the lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 0 . 45 . 'The brethren afterwards sat down to a tea a In fonrchctte
at the conclusion of which the usual toasts were proposed . In promising that of " The W . M ., " Bro . A . U . Whittaker said that although thc toast might have been trusted to abler hands , yet he was sure no one could be more sincere , and wishing the brethren to heartily respond to it as he could look back with pleasure from the time when the lodge was consecrated , and he ( Bro . Whittakcr ) was I . G . whilst their present W . M . was S . S ., not one unkind word
had ever passed between them , andjie felt sure their new Master would fill his position with credit to himself and honour to the lodge , and it augured well for the Avon Lodge when they saw such men coming forward as had that day Lcen invested as officers , for no work couid be better executed than theirs had been during his ( Bro . Whittaker ' s ) year of ollice . The l . P . M . went oil to say he felt sure no one would be backward in supporting their W . M . in his
position , and he trusted he might have a successful year . The W . M . replying , said there were times in a man ' s life when words could be scarcely found to express his feelings and such a time now presented itself to him . He was aware that most of the good a lodge could do depended in a great measure upon its W . M ,, and consequently he thought honours in prospective were better than future responsibilities , and he would do his best to merit them . He
further said thc Avon Lodge had had in Bro . Whittakcr their late W . M ., a man ol wonderful energy and occupation , and following in his ( Uro . Mcl ' arlane ' s ) track were officers of similar capacity and power , and he therefore hoped that the attractive power of the former and irresistible force of the latter would cause him to acquit himself satisfactorily , and he trusted all the brethren would give them their cordial support and bo regular and punctual in
their attendance , and , in feeling sure he should have the able assistance of thc P . M . 's , he trusted his shortcomings would be comjiensated for by their able assistance . Bro . Wm . Uostock , P . M ., in projiosing " The Health of their I . P . M ., " said he remembered ( he time when Uro . Whittakcr , who was filling one of the minor offices , looked wistfully towards the east , and , in the language of our late great statesman , said , " there will come a time when vou
shall hear me , which prophetic utterance had certainly been fulfilled ; and , in the language of our great poet , Bro . Whittakev had certainly taken the tide at its ebb and been led on to the fortunate position of W . M . Uro . Uostock further stated that their l . P . M . had worked well , and deserved the greatest praise , and more especially the gold P . M . ' s jewel which he in the name of tlie lodge was now
about to present ( o him , and in so doing he hoped it would act as a sort of talisman on the minds of the younger members to earn for themselves so honourable a rewa ' rd . The affixing of this mark of the brethren ' s appreciation on Uro . Whittaker ' s breast was the signal for loud applause , which having subsided , the respected recipient rose and said he would merely say he deeply thanked them for trie handsome jewel . Such an expression , however , fell very

Yates , S . D . ; Win . Byway , J . D . Torrest
