The Most Worshi p ful Grand Master the Prince of Wales has appointed Lord Llangattock Provincial Grand Master of the Eastern Division of South Wales in succession to the late Sir George Elliot .

# # # H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has been pleased to Constitute the Islands of Guernsey and Alderney into ii Province for Masonic purposes , and has appointed Drigade-Surgeon Dr . Balfour Cockburn Provincial Grand Master .

Ihe instances are rare in which , within a few weeks of celebrating the annual Festival of one of our Masonic Charities , it becomes possible to announce that ¦ 1 Chairman has been obtained for the next year ' s festival of the same Charity . It must , therefore , be

¦ ' ill the more gratifying to Bro . Terry , the Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , that he has been able to announce in the reprint from this journal ° f the Report and Analysis of the Stewards' Lists at

'he Festival in February last , that Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , Prov . G . Master of Somersetshire , has v'ery kindly promised his services as Chairman at the Old People ' s Anniversary , 'in February , 18 95 .

It is several years since Somersetshire has held the Place of honour as the " Chairman ' s Province " at one ° f our Anniversaries . The late Earl of Carnarvon , who

supporter of our Institutions , and we may therefore look forward with confidence to her acquitting herself well in this capacity , more especially as it will be the first occasion on which Bro . Lord Dungarvan will occupy the chair at the Festival of one of our Central Charities .

While on the subject of the Benevolent Institution and its Festivals , it may not be out of p lace to mention that the ultimate total of the Returns at the recent Anniversary is . £ 13 , 086 6 s . 7 d ., the number of Stewards being 299 . This fact was announced by Bro . Terry

at the monthly meeting of the Committee of Management on Wednesday , and must have delighted the ears of Bro . Col . G . N . Money , C . B ., P . G . M . Surrey , who was present to receive the thanks of the Committee , which had been voted to him as this year ' s Festival Chairman .

The Quarterl y General Court of the Royai Masonic Institution for Girls was held at Freemasons' Tavern on Thursday , the 12 th instant , when 22 children were

elected from an approved list of 40 . The other business was of a formal character . The names of the successful candidates will be found in Qur advertisement columns .

The statement of account and balance-sheet for the year 1893 , as contained in the report of the General Committee , are as satisfactory as might have been expected , when we bear in mind that the Festival in May , 1893 , under Bro . the Earl of Euston , Provincial

Grand Master of Northants and Hunts , was the mos ' successful that had been held since the year of the Centenary ; and it would have been more satisfactory still but for the very heavy unforeseen expenditure rendered necessary by the outbreak of scarlet fever

during the year . The receipts from all sources amounted to .. £ 17 , 041 2 s . 7 d ., and the expenditure to ^ 14 , 915 15 s . 5 d . In the former are included donations and subscriptions amounting to . £ 14 , 792 ios . id ., and interest on investments and deposits , £ 2006 7 s . ( 3 d .

In the latter will be found i . 405 ios . 2 d ., re-construction of drainage system , Junior School ; and . £ 1498 6 s . 6 d . in respect of expenditure incidental to the outbreak of fever . The balance remaining to the credit of the Institution is £ 2125 7 s . 2 d .

The statement of account and balance-sheet in r spect of the same period for the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys are even more satisfactory , the Festival of the year under Bro . Lord Brooke having produced about £ 22 , 000 . Here the receipts , including

, £ 19 , 892 2 s . 3 d . for donations and subscriptions , and £ ¦ 1165 6 s . 6 d , for dividends and interest , reached £ 21 , 515 I 2 s . 5 d ., and the expenditure—general , £ 12 , 014 ' 5 - 8 d ., and special , £ 464 12 s . gel . —to , £ 12 , 479 Ss . 5 d ., the balance to the good being £ 903 6 4 s .

It is further gratifying to note that the investments now amount to £ 38 , 333 17 s . 6 d ., as compared with about , £ 17 , 500 towards the close of the late regime . The Quarterly Court for the election of 30 from a list of 43 candidates is in progress at the time of our going to press .

The Province of West Lancashire has added yet another to its already long roll of lodges by the consecration , at Bootle , on Monday last , of a lodge bearing the name of the respected Provincial Grand Secretary , Bro . Goodacre . The ceremony , which took place in the

County Hall , was performed by the Pro Grand Alaster , the Ear ! of Lathom , P . G . M . of West Lancashire . Hi . s lordship was assisted by several Provincial Grand Lodge Officers , and there were present a large number of brethren from other Provinces .

Bro . Oscar Philippe , whose Zi ; al for the Charities and unbounded hospitality have been such marked features of his two years' rule of the Montague Guest Lodge , No . 1900 , signalled his coming retirement from the chair by a most charming banquet and

entertainment at the Inns of Court Hotel , on Wednesday last , Many visitors of distinction were present , including Bro . Sir John Monckton , P . G W . ; the Grand Secretary , Bro . Letchworth , and many others . All united

in paying a hearty tribute to the many Masonic virtues of the host . A pleasing feature of the proceedings was the presentation to every ol ' lher of the loJge of a memento of his two years' Mastership , in the shape of a silver match box , bearing a suitable inscription .

The Duke of Cambridge , who was accompanied by Col . Viscount Downc as aide-de-camp , held a levee on Thuisdry afternoon at the Horse Guards . About 150 oflicers atie-rulcd .

MILITARY LODGES . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , As an old military as well as civil Freemason , 1 have read with very great pleasure two articles in your present issue which induces IDS once again to trouble you with a letter , to give ease to my feelings .

His Royal Highness's position inthe Craft gives additional weight to the words he uses , when taking even an ordinary part in a lodge ' s working of which lodge 1 see he is an

old member . From many years of experience as a military Mason , 1 can most conscientiousl y endorse all his Royai Highness says as to the great advantage which accrues to any regiment or garrison where a military lodge visits . During my years of active service 1 had opportunities , perhaps but few had as many , of observing the

tone given to the Army members , while a lodge was in active working order , compared with the want of it , when , through the exigencies of service , this lodge fell into a dormant state , to be again awakened with the old good results . May military lodges increase in numbers and usefulness I sincerely trust . The other matter which struck a responsive key note

was the very able and unbiassed speech of Mrs . Tucker Pain , at Exinouth , when laying the foundation stone of the Sun Lodge . Nothing could have been in better taste , and I feel , if possible , more proud of being a Freemason than 1 was before , although now 47 years

have nearly passed since I " first saw the li ght . " The value of a publication like yours , wnich spreads abroad all that both instructs and warns members of the Craft , is more and more patent as your numbers go on to such high figures as 1309 . May this continue . — Yours fraternally .

1051 ] — AN OLD JEWEL . My well-informed Bro . VV . J . Hughan attributes the placing of " 1772 " upon the old jewel of Lennox Kilwinning to an error of the engraver for 1792 . The lodge in question was erected in 1772 , by Mother Kilwinning , upon petition of " Sundry Masons" in

, Campsie , but in 1792 it transfeired its allegiance to the Grand Lodge of Scotland . The introduction of " No . 247 " into the medal shows that it was not made in the iSth century . It would be worn as a decoration as a memorial of the lodge ' s former connection with the Kilwinning fraternity , 1772 . D . MURRAY LYONS .

" —This important annual is in its 17 th year of publication , and this time has been creditably printed at the "Journal" Ollices , Rochester . The originator and editor , Bro . Thomas Samuel Warne , has this year consented to accept assistance in his heavy

labours , tne joint editors now being Bros . Warne and G . R . Cobham , and most ably have they discharged their onerous duties . This provincial directory has to do with more Masonic lodges , chapters , and other Masonic bodies than any other issued in this country sav ; West Lancashire . Those of hast Lancashire and West Yorkshire not being in what may be termed "book-form . " Some idea of the

labour involved in the compilation of this mo = t useful annual , known locally as the "Immortal , " may be obtained , from realising the fact that full particulars are afforded of the officers and Past Masters , or former presiding ollicers of S'J lodges , 23 Royal Arch chapters , 20 Mark lodges , four Rose Croix chapters , two Knights Templar preceptories , four Red Cross conclaves , , Vc . The number of members under each lodge , and the totals far the past four years

arc duly detailed , 3050 for 189 ; , being the largest yet obtained , being an average ot about 02 brethren to each lodge . This is a much larger average than usual . The by-laws of the Prov . Grand Lodge , and also those of the Prov . Grand Chapter , as also the Treasurers' accounts for these two bodies , are printed ; most desirable features in such publications . The total votes for the Central

Masonic Charities held by lodges and other Masonic bodies in the province amount to 434 J , and by brethren , & c , yy 07 , the grand total being 14 , 250 , besides 1372 in the excellent Mark Benevolent Fund . 1 here is also a calendar for i .
