The members of the Court on assembling passed a vote of condolence with Bro . Sir Henry Isaacs , a popular past master , on the death of Lady Isaacs . After the performance of that melancholy duty , the Court came to a more pleasing one , viz ., the election as a member of Bro . Col . T . Davies Sewell , who has filled the office of clerk to the company for 33 years with great success . The Master , at the subsequent dinner , made a graceful reference to the compliment the Court had paid Bro . Col . Sewell .
BETHNAL GREEN FREE LIBRARY . —The committee of the above are in great want of funds to wipe out a debt that sadly cripples the extension of their unique work , especially now that the long dark nights are set in , and bring the usual crowd who seek admission . As stated by a writer lately , the Free Library is far-reaching in its efforts , for it gives the girls and boys a bright warm room to read in , with literature which
they wishto read , saving them from the terror of the street , and gives the men a cheery room to sit and read the oapers in , thus proving a veritable " Place of Refuge . The island was last officially visited in 1 S 97 , when the population numbered 64 , under the benign sway of Mr . Peter Green , who succeeded to the Governorship vice Governor Glass , formerly a corporal in the Royal Artillery , and founder of the settlement . The inhabitants of
Tristan da Cunha , which was taken possession of by a military force during the residence of Napoleon at St . Helena , practically enjoy their possessions in common , anl are an eminently healthy and moral little community . The younger and more ambitious members migrate in batches to the Cape , and very possibly some descendants or kinsfolk of the late Corporal Glass , R . A ., may be at this moment fighting for us in South Africa . —Navy and Army .
ON THE 15 th inst ., the Fruiterers'Company , in accordance with ancient precedent , made its accustomed presentation of bome-grown fruit to the Lord Mayor . A few years ago there seemed to be every probability of the company taking once again its right place at the head of the fruit-growing industry . Exhibitions were organised , and an educational movement was entered upon ; but , alas ' . the activity proved only temporary , and to-day the company is to all intents and purposes non-existent as far as its usefulness is concerned . Now , to judge by the interestine book , " The Wasted
Orchards of England , " published by the " Gardeners' Magazine , " the need of such a movement as that inaugurated by Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., when Master of the company is greater than ever . A great opportunity is , therefore , afforded to the company to confer a valuable service on the country , and in this direction to justify its existence as one of the great guilds of the City of London . AN INTERESTING and comparatively rare Masonic function took place in the British Temple , Capetown , recently , the occasion being the consecration of a new lodge of Mark Master Masons , to be known as the St . George ' s Lodge , under the English Constitution . Bro . C J . Hogg , D . G . M ., occupied the chair , and was supported by a good muster of Grand Lodge visiting brethren , while some 40 Masons , representing the English , Scottish , and Irish Constitutions , assembled to aid in launching this new effort of the Craft . The usual ceremonial having baen gone through , Bro . Hallinstalled Bro . C VV . Steward as the first Master of the newly-formed lodge .
THE LORD CHANCELLOR will receive Bro . the Lord Mayor elect at the House of Lords on Thursday , the : 4 th inst ., at 11 . 15 a . m . On the same day , at 11 . 45 a . m ., there will be a special service at Westminster Abbey . Places will be reserved for the Judges , King ' s Counsel , and officers of the Supreme Court who may attend . The Dean will receive the judges at the West Door . The service will be over at 12 . 30 . King ' s Counsel , officers , and other judicial and official persons will enter by Dean ' s Yard . The Junior Bar will enter by Jerusalem Chamber . The Lord Chancellor ' s reception at the House of Lords will take place at 12 . 45 .
THE MICHAELMAS COURT of the Loriners' Company was held at the Albion Tavern last week , a dinner following under the presidency of Bro . Aid . Sir William Treloar , the Master . The members of the Court on assembling passed a vote of condolence with Bro . Sir Henry Isaacs , a popular past master , on the death of Lady Isaacs . After the performance of that melancholy duty , the Court came to a more pleasing one , viz ., the election as a member of Bro . Col . T . Davies Sewell , who has filled the office of clerk to the company for 33 years with great success . The Master , at the subsequent dinner , made a graceful reference to the compliment the Court had paid Bro . Col . Sewell .
BETHNAL GREEN FREE LIBRARY . —The committee of the above are in great want of funds to wipe out a debt that sadly cripples the extension of their unique work , especially now that the long dark nights are set in , and bring the usual crowd who seek admission . As stated by a writer lately , the Free Library is far-reaching in its efforts , for it gives the girls and boys a bright warm room to read in , with literature which
they wishto read , saving them from the terror of the street , and gives the men a cheery room to sit and read the oapers in , thus proving a veritable " Place of Refuge . THE ISLE OF TRISTAN DA CUNHA . —Not many of our readers are likely to be thrilled by the announcement that a mail has just been despatched to Tristan da Cunha , but the incident is none the less of very considerable interest . The island was last officially visited in 1 S 97 , when the population numbered 64 , under the benign sway of Mr . Peter Green , who succeeded to the Governorship vice Governor Glass , formerly a corporal in the Royal Artillery , and founder of the settlement . The inhabitants of
Tristan da Cunha , which was taken possession of by a military force during the residence of Napoleon at St . Helena , practically enjoy their possessions in common , anl are an eminently healthy and moral little community . The younger and more ambitious members migrate in batches to the Cape , and very possibly some descendants or kinsfolk of the late Corporal Glass , R . A ., may be at this moment fighting for us in South Africa . —Navy and Army .
ON THE 15 th inst ., the Fruiterers'Company , in accordance with ancient precedent , made its accustomed presentation of bome-grown fruit to the Lord Mayor . A few years ago there seemed to be every probability of the company taking once again its right place at the head of the fruit-growing industry . Exhibitions were organised , and an educational movement was entered upon ; but , alas ' . the activity proved only temporary , and to-day the company is to all intents and purposes non-existent as far as its usefulness is concerned . Now , to judge by the interestine book , " The Wasted
Orchards of England , " published by the " Gardeners' Magazine , " the need of such a movement as that inaugurated by Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., when Master of the company is greater than ever . A great opportunity is , therefore , afforded to the company to confer a valuable service on the country , and in this direction to justify its existence as one of the great guilds of the City of London . No very great expenditure is called for , and consequently the company cannot plead poverty as a reason for a display of the indifference that now unfortunately prevails . —City Press .
