C . ; Vivian Bennetts , Org . ; Charles Lawrence and A . G . Fowler , Stwds . Bro . T . Hawken was next presented with a Past Master ' s collar and jewel in token of the lodge ' s appreciation of his services as W . M ., and Messrs . Arthur Pooley and Cyril Herbert Rundell , having been elected , were duly initiated into Freemasonry .
Two candidates for membership having been proposed , and other necessary business disposed of , about 50 brethren dined togeth er at Freemasons' Tavern . In proposing the first toast—that of "His Majesty the King "—Bro . Symons said that while a certain section of the press were attacking Freemasonry , and seeking to identify their Society with Socialists and Anarchists , they should be glad that no less a person than the King was the Protector of the Order . The other loyal toasts having been given ,
The W . M . proposed that of " The Grand Officers . " He was proud to say that the lodge could now boast of three Grand Officers in their midst , Bro . Leach Barrett having on the occasion of the installation of the G . M . been appointed to the office of Past G . S . B . Bro . Leach Barrett , in replying , thanked the brethren for coupling his mm : with the toast . He believed that there were many in the Craft more worthy than he of the
Grand office that had been conferred on him . He had always done what he could to help a brother whenever it lay in his power , and if he in his turn had not been also helped he would not hold the position he did that evening . He should always do his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge , and to carry out the principles of Freemasonry-Brotherly Love , Relief , and Truth . Bro . W . Lake , Asst . G . Sec , also replied .
The toast of "The P . G . M . of Cornwall . R . W . Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , P . D . G . M ., " was next proposed by the W . M ., who said that their distinguished brother was certainly the most popular man in the West , if not in the whole of England—a popularity moreover which was not confined to Freemasonry . The toast was enthusiastically received . Bro . T . Hawken , I . P . M ., having proposed " The Health of the Worshipful Master , " r
Bro . Symons , in reply , said that with the exception of the day on which he was married , that was the proudest time of his life . He hooed that confession would be appreciated b y the unmarried brethren present . From the ' moment he was initiated it had been his intention , if he were worthy of it , to rise to the position which it was hli proud privilege to occupy that evening . He had heard it described as an autocratic
position , but he hoped they would not lind him too autocratic except where it was for the benefit of the lodge . He might make mistakes , but he believed that a man who had never made a mistake had never done anything . He thanked the brethren most cordially for the welcome they had given him , and for the support which he knew they all would give him , from the officers to the newest joining member , while he occupied that chair .
In gmng the toast of " The Initiates , " the W . M . advised the two brethren who had entered Freemas oniy that evening to start their Masonic career from that moment . Although the ceremony might occasionally seem monotonous , he assured them that , once they became imbued with the spirit of Masonry , the lodge meetings would be to them not the least instructive occasions of their lives . Bros . A . Pooley and C . Rundell having responded , . , . ^! ' . . ! upon , Bro . E . P . Broad , Charity Representative of Cornwall , to
reply ror 1 he visitors , " who said he was most pleased to have to congratulate the lodge on their excellent working and their prosperous financial condition . As Cornwall ' s Charity Representative he was glad to say that ^ 2000 had been given by the province to the Central Maso nic Charities as well as £ 1200 to their own local funds . It would interest the lodge to know that in one Cornish case of the elections that week 2000 of the 4700 votes which got the candidate in were given by Cornish brethren in London . He reminded them that Bro . Colville Smith , Dep . P . G . M . Cornwall would
represent the province at the next Girls' Festival , when he hoped the lodge would ai'J in making a big list . Bros . T . P . Chirgwin , P . P . J . G . W . Cornwall ; Layman , W . M . 234 S ; A . Johnson P . M . 2729 ; and Rev . E . S . Shuttleworth , P . P . G . C . Cornwall , also replied , the last ! named brother thanking the lodge , in the course of his speech , for the generous way in which it had come to the assistance of the famil y of his late lamented brother , Canon Shuttleworth , in their hour of need .
In proposing " The Installing Master and the Past Masters , " the W . M . compIU mented Bro . Hawken , I . P . M ., on the admirable manner in which he had performed the work that evening , the recollection of which would remain with them for a very Ion ' * time . The work of the Past Masters spoke for itself for the present numerical strength of the lodge was due to the efforts of Worshipful Misters in the past , who had made for the lodge a sure foundation .
Bro . Hawken , I . P . M ., was very gratified that what effort he had made had ( riven the lodge satisfaction . He should always continue to do his best both for the lodge and lor the Cralt .
Bro . Roberts , P . M ., said that he had made a special effort to be there that evening , having left Lyons on Ihursdayin order to get to London at nine o ' clock on Friday , to be in time for the lodge . He was sure from the admirable way in which Bro . Symons had done his work on that occasion he would always be equal to the position . Bro . Widger attempted , to follow Bro . Robert ' s lead in stating that ha had done his best to get to the lodge in time . He had , unfortunately , been obliged to travel some distance of the journey on the South Eastern Railway , but had finished it by takinir an omnibus , and was , in consequence , only a half an hour late .
Bros . Cope , S . W ., Vague , and Ham ' yn replied for "The Officers , " and theTvIer ' , toast closed the proceedings . ' a The musical arrangements under the direction of Bro . Vivian Bennetts , were contnbuted to by Misses Edith Carte and Dora Thorpe , and Bros . Ralph Norn ' ' t Arthur Helmore . r * " ¦*

Ralph Norn ' ' t Arthur Helmore . r * " ¦*
