Cornsvall , 9 69 ; and Osven Hills , 755 . The lode * e svas opened in due form , and the minutes
svere read and confirmed . Bros . Woodford , Cornsvall , Capt . Andresvs , Langley , Lange , Steng , and Osven Hills , svere elected members . Bro . Woodford then proceeded to deliver his lecture before a vcry attentive audience . He called attention to a recent discussion about the antiquity of the Third Degree , and intimated his opinion that it svas far older than 1717 , alike in verbiage ( of svhich he gave examples ) , and in
general arrangement . That there svas a seventeenth century English Freemasonry svas nosv incontestable , and sve probably had in the Sloane MS . svhich might date from 1 GS 0 , and must date before 1717 , a representation of the symbolical and actual teaching of the lodges then . Bro . Woodford then proceeded to explain that in 1 S 13 the tsvo main svorkings svere those of the Moderns and the Antients , though there svere certain subsidiary or local svorkings also
in existence , such as the York , the Prestonian , and svorkings , which svere probably a mixture of all svorkings . For it must not be forgotten , the lecturer continued , that in time svorkings , in themselves separate and distinct , got " mixed up , " and even at this hour the various svorkings extant—such as the Emulation , the Stability , the Prestonian , svhat remained of any of the York , and svhat endured , if at all , of the Ancient—had got intersvoven by repetition ,
and svere , in fact , difficult to separate and distinguish . Bro . Woodford then proceeded to point out , in a svay not reproducible here , certain changes svhich had taken place during the present generation , and commended the svisdom and moderation of Grand Lodge , svhich had never sought to drasv the line too taut , or to interfere svith non-essentials so long as the true essence svas preserved . Bro . Woodford doubted greatly the reality of the idea or need of any
material change in our ceremonial , advocated , he understood , by a fesv inexpert workmen . The enforcement of a " sealed book" of Masonic lore must inevitably lead ere long to a printed ritual , svhich would be the sveakening and destruction of English Freemasonry , svhile , in his opinion , as faithful depositories of the svork of the chair , they svere bound to hand on toothers , unimpaired and unaltered , svhat they had received from loyal svorkers before them . Bro .
Woodford also impressed on his hearers the duty of attending lodges of instruction , and learning true Alasonic work from faithful Preceptors . He deprecated all side svays of obtaining Masonic knosvledge . Bro . Woodford enforced the value and beauty of the ritual , amid the applause of his hearers . A very pleasant hour was spent b y a most attentive audience , svho at thc close of Bro . Woodford ' s address
greeted him most cordially . At thc request of the W . M ., VV . Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., moved that the thanks of the lodge be accorded to the V . W . Bro . A . F . A . Woodford , P . G . C , & c , for his very instructive lecture , and that the same be recorded on the minutes . In the course of his speech Bro . Stevens , remarking upon the evident desire of the lodges and lodges of instruction to vary the monotony of continued rehearsals of ceremonial , by availing themselves of opportunities such as Bro . Woodford
Instruction.
had that evening afforded , maintained that it could not nosv be said that Masonic lecturers svere not forthcoming or that the brethren generally could not be interested and instructed in a manner different from that svhich obtained but a few years since . Bros . ; Hughan , Whytehead , Cumberland , and others , svere equally svith Bro . Woodford , and he hoped he might add himself , ever ready
svhen called upon to devote that ability they might respectively possess , to the advancement of the literature of the Craft . The svorthy lecturer on this occasion gave by his position in the Order a countenance of no slight importance to these lectures , and therefore such service should be
recognised in the manner svhich his motion indicated , VV . Bro . C . Andresvs very eloquently seconded the motion , svhich svas carried svith acclamation . Bro . Woodford having thanked the brethren the lodge , svhich had been duly closed dosvn , received several of the visitors as members , and svas subsequently closed in peace and harmony .
