Dr. Morris, The Masonic Poet Laureate.
DR . MORRIS , THE MASONIC POET LAUREATE .
On December 17 th , 1 SS 4 , my dear old friend and brother Dr , Rob . Morris svas elected the Poet Laureate of Freemasonry , and received the "Laurel Wreath , " at the hands of the Grand Alaster of Nesv York . Alany distinguished brethren svere present on the interesting and unique occasion , and still more members of the " mystic tie " sent letters
expressive of their keen appreciation of the event , and their loving sympathy svith the recipient of the honour . A sketch of the proceedings , and copies of the communications from celebrated Craftsmen of both Hemispheres , have been published in a neat pamphlet of some Go pages , the origin of the movement being I believe due to one of the svidel y knosvn Freemasons in America , R . W . Bro . Robert Alacoy of New York . Of course a reference is made to the
"Coronation" of Robert Burns as Poet Laureate , by the Lodge Canongate , Kilwinning , Edinburgh , in 17 S 7 , but it does not seem to have been known by those svho took part in the intensely interesting proceedings that many other poets received the same title as Bro Robert Burns , in the same Lodge as time rolled on , not forgeting Bro . Hogg , the " Ettrick Shepherd . " Doubtless the office of Grand Bard of the Grand Lodge of Scotland has made Poetry all
the more acceptable in relation to the Craft , at all events so in Scotland , the office being held by Dr . James Cranstoun at the present time , in succession to the late Bro . James Ballantine . A fesv brethren have svritten svhat are svorthy of being called poems , but they are indeed fesv . Of these Dr . Alorris is beyond question the acknosvledged chief , and all admit he is fully entitled to the honour . Early in 1 SS 3 , in my Directory for the Province of Cornsvall , I styled " my
esteemed friend and M . W . Bro . Dr . Morris , the l ' oet Laureate of Universal Freemasonry , " and it is a source of much delight for his old friends in this , especially Bro . D . Alurray Lyon and myself , to find he has been so honoured . Our good brother T . B . Whytehead has done svell to direct attention to the veteran Alasonic author in a racy article on " The Poetry of Freemasonry , " and therefore I shall content myself svith but a brief notice of the big volume of
poems to svhich he has so appreciatively referred . To fitly commemorate the Alasonic Laureation , Dr . Alorris has consented to publish the svhole of his Alasonic Poems in a grand volume of nearly four hundred pages . I need not say that typographically it is quite on a par svith the excellence of the many varied compositions—over 300—svhich are to be found in its handsome pages . Practically all the possible svants Alasonically are supplied in the volume for
lodges , chapters , and preceptories , a full repertory of passages appropriate to funeral occasions , epitaphs , & c , pieces in rich profession for banquets , installations , & c , and in the language of the prospectus , finally , a broad survey of the Alasonic theory in its exoteric feature for the instruction of many Alasons , ladies of refined taste , and the general public . " All the copies of this Laureate Edition svill be
registered , the price being five dollars . I have consented to receive subscriptions of one Guinea for each copy , to be sent to this country , carriage free , and for the sake of the Author and the Craft , I trust that the response svill be hearty and prompt . I feel I have only to say , that after payment for the printing , the whole of the proceeds , svill be given , svithout any deductions , svhatever , to Dr . Rob . Alorris , the Poet Laureate of Freemasonry . VV . J . HUGHAN .

VV . J . HUGHAN .
