William Eliot , who had attained his 92 nd year , and ¦ had been for over 70 years a Freemason , a Coupar Angus correspondent writes that , long as Mr . Eliot was connected with the Craft , it was incorrect to call him " the oldest Freemason in Europe . " In respect both of age and length
of connection with the Masonic brotherhood , Bro . Eliot is outstripped by Bro . George Stirtan , who resides at Mountpleasant , Coupar Angus . Mr . Stirtan is in his 103 rd year , and was initiated into Freemasonry in St . John's Lodge , Coupar Angus , in the year 1808—a fact borne out by the books of the lodge . Bro . Stirtan has thus been 77 years a Mason , and may with safety claim the distinction of being the oldest Freemason in Europe . —Scotsman .

The ball took place in the Town Hall , the use of which , together with the suite of rooms adioinimr . had been kindlv
placed at the disposal of the brethren by his Worship the Mayor , Bro . E . Clark . The Mayor and Miss Clark ( the Mayoress ) received the company from 8 . 30 to 9 p . m . The various rooms had been tastefully decorated for the occasion with evergreens , banners , Masonic emblems , & c , and when all the company were assembled , —the brethren a Ppearing in their various regalia—the ball room wore a
gay and attractive appearance . Bro . Vetter's ( Manchester ) quadrille band occupied the orchestra , and played a choice selection of fashionable dance music , in a really excellent sryle . Y E A NTIENTE F RATERNITIE OF Y E R AHERE ALMONERS . —A very attractive Smoking Concert was given by the " Rahere Almoners , " at the Champion Hotel , Aldersgate-street , on Monday , the 26 th inst . Admission was by invitation tickets , and these were sought for so freel y that many friends of the society were unfortunately disappointed . Bro . A . C . Morton , CC , as Prior for the present year
occupied the chair . Bro . James Stevens , Chancellor , and Mr . Thos . Sangster , CC , Recorder , the two gentlemen who are the modern founders of the " Fraternitie " were present , the former in the capacity of vice-chairman , and the latter generally attending to the comforts of the numerous guests . Bro . G . S . Graham undertook the arrangement of the concert , and was assisted by several well-known
vocalists , who are also Freemasons . The musical services of these brethren were given most effectively , and without the slightest delay , over a period of three hours , with the result that the utmost satisfaction was expressed by all present . A contribution to the Alms Chest of the Fraternitie was made voluntarily by the audience , and produced a sum total which will , it was said , add welcome funds to
the balance in hand for the relief of the distressed . We noticed several prominent Freemasons in full enjoyment of an entertainment which reflected much credit upon all concerned in its management . It was announced that probably the " Fraternitie" will repeat this concert , with additional support from talented artistes , at the Cannonstreet Hotel , prior to the close of the season .

Admission was by invitation tickets , and these were sought for so freel y that many friends of the society were unfortunately disappointed . Bro . A . C . Morton , CC , as Prior for the present year
occupied the chair . Bro . James Stevens , Chancellor , and Mr . Thos . Sangster , CC , Recorder , the two gentlemen who are the modern founders of the " Fraternitie " were present , the former in the capacity of vice-chairman , and the latter generally attending to the comforts of the numerous guests . Bro . G . S . Graham undertook the arrangement of the concert , and was assisted by several well-known
vocalists , who are also Freemasons . The musical services of these brethren were given most effectively , and without the slightest delay , over a period of three hours , with the result that the utmost satisfaction was expressed by all present . A contribution to the Alms Chest of the Fraternitie was made voluntarily by the audience , and produced a sum total which will , it was said , add welcome funds to
the balance in hand for the relief of the distressed . We noticed several prominent Freemasons in full enjoyment of an entertainment which reflected much credit upon all concerned in its management . It was announced that probably the " Fraternitie" will repeat this concert , with additional support from talented artistes , at the Cannonstreet Hotel , prior to the close of the season .
