Hespoke in high terms of the working in the lodge , and bore testimony to the close unity existing between Masonry as exemplified in Australia , and that he had just witnessed .

M ., Bro . Wm . Stiles , opened the lodge at half-past four , and the first half-hour was devoted to the tormal business of reading the minutes and receiving tbe Port

Stiles having completed the ceremony of installation by delivering the customary addresses to the Master , Wardens , and brethren , Bro . Smith then proceeded to initiate Messrs . William Wagstaff , James Wagstaff , and George May as Entered Apprentices , but he had not

proceeded far when the bronchial attack , from which unfortunately he was suffering , made speaking so difficult to him , that he was under the necessity of requesting Bro . Stiles to resume the chair for a time , and complete the ceremony for him . This Bro . Stiles did with his usual readiness , but Bro . Smith was able afterwards ^ to resume the chair and conclude the business of the meeting , which did not impose so severe a strain upon his vocal organs . Bro . Willing

proposed that a vote of thanks should be recorded on the minutes for the admirable manner in which Bro . Stiles had performed the ceremony of installation , and the vote was carried unanimously ; but , in returning thanks for this recognition of his services , Bro . Stiles remarked that he did not consider himself entitled to it , because in his judgment an outgoing Master was not doing anything beyond his duty in performing the ceremony of installing his

successor . On the motion of the Treasurer , Bro . James Willing , jun ., a sum of £ 10 ios . was voted from the funds of the lodge for the relief of one of its members who had fallen into necessitous circumstances . The VV . M . then rose , and , addressing Bro . Stiles , said that a jewel of the value of ten guineas had been unanimously voted by the lodge as a recognition by the members of the highly efficient manner in which Bro . Stiles had discharged the duties

of his high office during the past year . Bro . Stiles already wore a considerable number of similar decorations , but he hoped that years hence , whenever he might be engaged in looking over those mementos of his Masonic career , this jewel in particular , which he now presented to him , might remind him of many happy evenings passed in the society of the members of the Royal Savoy Lodge . Bro . Stiles having briefly acknowledged the compliment , Bro . Willing

again rose , and announced that Bro . Stiles had consented to act as Steward for the lodge at the next anniversary Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and he therefore proposed that a sum of £ 10 ios . should be voted by the lodge and placed on Bro . Stiles ' s list . This having been seconded , was agreed to by the lodge , and it transpired subsequently that before the brethren separated Bro . Stiles had X ' 100 on his list . There being no further

business , the lodge was closed by command of the W . M . After the banquet , ; which followed the closing of the lodge , the customary loyal . and Masonic toasts were proposed by the W . M . in the chair , and ( cordially drunk by the brethren present . After the toasts of "The Oueen and the Craft , " and " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , the M . W . G . M ., " had beenldisposedof , the W . M . briefly proposed " The Health of the Grand Officers , " coupling it with the

name of Bro . Greenwood , Grand Secretary of the Province of Surrey , of which province he was also Past G . S . W ., who had the additional honour of being Past Grand Sword Bearer of England . Bro . Greenwood , in reply , said that the Grand Officers as a body had at heart that which they all had—the welfare of the Craft . On their behalf he thanked the W . M . and the brethren for the manner in which the toast had been

proposed and for the reception it had met with . But apart from the Grand Officers he wished to return thanks on his own behalf . For a number of years he had had the pleasure of meeting and appreciating Bro . Smith in another sphere of action , without knowing his connection with the Craft , and when the fact came to his knowledge he accepted the invitation to be present on that occasion with a great degree of pleasure , because he was sure that

wherever Bro . Smith was known he was appreciated , and was a man whom it was a pleasure to know as a friend . He much regretted that he was unable to be present early enough to witness the installation , but in consequence of the indisposition of the VV . M . he had had the advantage of seeing Bro . Stiles ' s working subsequently , and was very much impressed by his skill and his earnestness . Bro . Stiles , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the

W . M ., " and said that he and J . W . Smith were associates of many years standing . Bro . Smith had that evening been installed W . M ., and had initiated the three candidates who were ready for initiation . He ( Bro . Stiles ) was very sorry that Bro . Smith had been unable , through loss of voice , to perform the whole of the ceremony , but those who knew him knew that he was perfectly able to carry out his duties , and that be would not have delegated that duty to

anyone , but for the misfortune of which he had spoken . The VV . M . was to be congratulated on the very great successof the Royal Savoy Lodge , and he ( Bro . Stiles ) asked thebrethren to join him in wishing most heartily , health , prosperity , and happiness to their VV . M . Bro . J . VV . Smith said that he thanked thc brethren very much for the kind manner in which Bro . Stiles had proposed his health , and for the kind way in which the brethren had

responded to it . He was sorry that he had been unable to complete the ceremony of initiation ; but his voice was in such a state that he considered it unfair to inflict it upon the initiates , and he knew that the substitute he obtained would be able to do them full justice . He had little to add but to thank the brethren for the very kind reception they had given him . The Worshipful Master then proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , " "The I . P . M ., " and "The Past

Masters , " to which Bros . Stiles and James Willing , jun ., responded . The toast of " The Visitors " was responded to b y Bros . Greenwood , Luker , G . Everett , McLeod ( a provincial brother , who was understood to be a very active Mason in Nottingham ) , and other brethren . "The Health of the Initiates , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and "Officers of the Lodge" were duly

honoured ; and , before the Tyler's toast was proposed , a toast to the prosperity of the Charities was interposed , and was responded to by Bro . John Mason . About a hundred brethren sat down to dinner , including a large number of visitors , among whom were Bros . Aillard , W . M . 615 ; C . Greenwood , P . M . 211 , P . G . S . B . ; J . Mason ,

the ensuing Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Festival , and a vote of sympathy passed to Bro . Potts , who afterwards initiated Mr . T . H . Smith into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment , when the usual toasts were duly honoured ,

and the VV . M . specially remarked upon thc loss sustained by the country and Masonry generally by the death of Bro . Col . Burnaby , who had been known and respected as a brave soldier , an energetic Mason , an indefatigable explorer , and a clever writer . The VV . M . called upon the brethren to receive in silence "The memory of our deceased brother , " which was duly honoured .

As an instance of Bro . Col . Burnaby ' s interest in Masonry , Bro . Potts related that , a few months since , being in Bro . Col . Burnaby ' s company at a City company ' s dinner , the gallant colonel was called upon to respond for the Army , whereupon he rose and said , " Worshipful Master and brethren . " This caused a laugh , when he immediately corrected himself and said , " Worshipful Master , gentlemen , and brethren , " which was received with many cheers .

visitors , the lodge was closed , and the brethren then partook of supper , served in an adjoining room .

M . 211 , P . G . S . B . ; J . Mason ,

M . called upon the brethren to receive in silence "The memory of our deceased brother , " which was duly honoured .
