fjpHE annual Convocation of the Provincial Grand J _ Chapter is . to be held at -the Freemasons' Hall , Gandy Street , Exeter , on Wednesday next , 20 th inst , and Comp . Major G . C . Davie P . AssistG . Soj . of England , the
Acting Grand Superintendent , is expected to preside . This is the first Provincial Grand Chapter to be held since the appointment of Lord Northcote , G . C . I . E , & c , as Governor of Bombay . Already his lordship has captivated the Brethren in that dependency , and there is a possibility of
Devonshire.
his being elected by the Grand Lodge at Edinburgh as Grand Master of all Scottish Freemasonry in India , as well as being appointed as Pro District Grand Master of Bombay , to act as such in the absence of the Duke of Connaught
( Past Grand Master ) , who has long been the District Grand Master . It is hoped that the railway arrangements will permit of Companions travelling to Exeter to attend the Provincial Chapter' at reduced rates as usual .
Certain classes of Freemasons appear to be still in doubt upon matters in which there should be no doubt at all . A little too much generosity in high quarters may , perhaps , have led to a somewhat lengthening of the cords , which has certainly not conduced to a strengthening of the
stakes of the venerable Craft of Freemasonry . Dispensations have for the last twenty years been too freely granted for the wearing of Masonic clothing at special church and other services , as well as at balls , ladies' banquets , and other entertainments where the uninstructed or popular world who
are not Masons have the right to participate . These dispensations have now , very wisely , been refused for a time , but still the leaven which has been for . years leavening the whole lump is not yet eradicated , if we may judge from the report of the Board of General Purposes presented at the
meeting of Grand Lodge on the 6 th inst . it is the principal subject the report deals with . Within the last three months the Board have had before them two Lodges which have had proposed , and responded to , Masonic toasts in a Masonic manner , in mixed companies of Masons and non-Masons .
The Board have clearly pointed out that this is an infringement of the rules of the Order , and must not be permitted . It is only of comparatively recent years such a breach of regulation would have been dreamed of . It is the ordinary practice that during Masonic toasts even the waiters who
remain in the room must be rreemasons . An instance of strictness was within my own observation many years ago , where one of the old-fashioned genuine Freemasons , who was a visitor at a suburban Lodge , called attention to the fact that the windows of the banquetting room on the first
floor of the hotel were open , it being a blazing hot summer night in August , and that what was said might be heard outside . The Board of General Purposes is now appearing to be quite as strict as my old and deceased friend Brother Muggeridge . — " Birmingham Daily Post . "
