S ^^^^^^^^ a SATUBDAY , 16 TH JUNE 1900 .

Church Service.

CHURCH SERVICE .

IN connection with the Zetland Lodge , No . 603 , Cleckheaton , a Masonic Service was held in the Old Wh'te Chapel , in that town , on Sunday morning , 13 th ult . The Old White Chapel of the North is mentioned in the Domesday survey , and has many historical associations . The Church was crowded in every part , and a handsome sum was realised from the collection . Among- the Masons

present were Bros . Hodgson W . M ., Robinson , Crowther , Naylor , Ellison , J . Clough , Sinkinson , Halliday , Cliff , Birkhead , Newsome , Dr . Lodge , Dr . Forshaw ( FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE ) , Drake , Sharp , Hardhill , Berry , Blackburn , Holden , Law , Wood , Davies , Hovvarth , Birkett , Robinson , and Stocks .

The lessons were read by Bro . W . H . Clough , and the anthem was given by Bro . H . Waddington P . M ., with unsurpassable effect . The Sermon was delivered by Bro . the Rev . John Trew , B . A ., Past Provincial Grand Chaplain of Renfrewshire , Vicar of Drighlington . The Rev . Brother ' s text was taken from I Kings viii 11 :

" For the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord . " We have here my Brethren , he said , a sign of the approval and consequent presence of Jehovah , the Architect Supreme and Grand Master Builder . He here displayed his

favourable acceptance of Solomon s act m building the Temple , as the place where he might put His name . Hiram , King of Tyre , a contemporary of King Solomon , readily assisted him in preparing for the construction of the Temple , furnishing him with timber , stone , artificers , besides a loan of

money . Upon the accession of Solomon to the throne of Israel , warm were the congratulations of Hiram by his ambassadors . Solomon informed Hiram of the desire of his father David to build a Temple to the glory of Jehovah , and asked his

assistance . Hiram ' s reply was highly satisfactory " I will do all thy desire , concerning timber of Cedar and timber of Fir—my servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea , and I will convey them by sea in floats , unto the place that thou shalt appoint me , and I will cause them to be

discharged there , and thou shalt bring them , and thou shalt accomplish thy desire in giving food for my household" ( or brotherhood ) . The timber being cut down , was floated to Joppa , the seaport of Jerusalem , whence it was conveyed by

land to that city . Solomon , in return for Fliram ' s kindness , giving 20 , 000 measures of wheat , and 20 , 000 measures of pure oil , also supporting the artificers and labourers supplied by the King of Tyre . Solomon also presented to him 20 cities in Galilee .

Then came Hiram the Builder , a cunning man , endowed with understanding , a widow ' s son of the tribe of Naphthah , and his father was a man of Tyre , a worker in . brass , filled with wisdom and understanding and cunning to work in all works of brass . To this Hiram , King Solomon

was indebted for all the ornamental work of the Temple—a proof of the high estimation in which this Hiram was held in the court of Tyre . He is also called " Huram Abi" or Hiram my Father . This title was not infrequently given to those held in high esteem . This Hiram was an architect ,

and when the work of the Temple was completed , he inspected and passed the workmanship . Jehovah' — 'Supreme Grand Master , having accepted the structure as sufficient to be honoured by His Divine presence , gave visible proof of His dwelling among men . Solomon being thus assurer ! of

God ' s presence and favour , proceeds to render thanks to Him for this sign of His goodness . Solomon by these acts of solemn prayer , thanksgiving and blessing added to

sacrifice , showed a clear perception that . the religion God approves has the outward and visible , as well as the inward and spiritual . The design , conceived by David , planned by King
