Provincial Grand Mark Lodge Of Hampshire And The Isle Of Wight.

P . G . M . M ., who said that the Royal Family had greatly identified themselvcs with Masonry in all its branches . There svas no Degree in the Craft of which H . R . H . the Prince of Wales was not a member . He had done a grcal deal of good to Masonry and its Charities , and in extending his " influence had extended Charity .

The P . G . M . M . proposed "The Health of the M . W . G . M . M ., the Earl of Kintore , and all Past Grand Mark Masters , " and said that it svas a great advantage having Bro . the Earl of Kintore as Grand Master , as he also held a hig h ofiice in the Grand Chapter of Scotland , whicii kept Mark Masonry at its height when it was at a losv ebb in England . The bonds of both lodges had thus been drawn close together , to the immense advantage of both .

The P . G . M . M . proposed the toast of "The R . W . Deputy G . M . M ., the Lord Egerton of Tatton , the Grand Wardens and Officers of Grand Mark Lodge , Present and Past , " and said that they all honestly and very-zealously performed their duties . VVhen Bro . H . R . H . Prince Albert Victor of

Wales was advanced in the Isaac Newton Lodge at Cambridge the Grand Lodge Officers were nearly all present on a very short notice . He svas glad to see that they did nol exercise their privilege of doing the svork themselves , but they left it to the VV . M . and officers of the lodge , who did it well .

Bro . Lord J TAYLOUR , Senior Grand Warden of England , briefly responded , as he said he had another toast to propose , and he had to catch the boat . Bro . Lord J TAYLOUR said it afforded him very much pleasure lo propose "The Health of the M . W . Prov . G . Mark Master , the Rev . Canon G . Raymond Portal , M . A . " All the brethren were glad he had accepted office —( hear , hear )—and he ( Bro . Lord J . Taylour ) was obliged to Bro . Le Feuvre for bringing forsvard svhat he had that day seconded .

Bro . the Rev . Canon PORTAL , P . G . M . M ., responded , and said he felt .-rraleful for thc great kindness and well svishes from the brethren . So long as ihcy were content to put up with his imperfect services he svas pleased lo render them . The svell being and working of the province

was in the hands of Bro . Loveland , and he was sure of receiving the support of everybody as far as his avocation would allow him of visiting the different lodges . Bro . L OVELAND responded , and said he felt some diffidence in taking an ofiice whicii had been so honourably filled before him . He relied on the assistance of ihe Provincial Grand Officers in going round visiting the lodges in the province , as that svould bring them close together , and he would endeavour to do his duty to the very ' utmost . He might say that he would allosv no books to be used in lodge —( laughter )—and if he found them being used he svould report the lodges . ( Hear . )

Bro . LE F EUVRE proposed the toast of " The VVorshipfuI Masters of the Lodges of the Province , and Success to Mark Masonry , " which was responded to by Bro . WEBB , of No . 63 . Bro . GEO . J . TILLING proposed " The Grand Mark Benevolent Fund , " and Bro . S TONE responding , brought the toast list to an end at about 6 . 30 , when the brethren dispersed .

Terry , who , we are sorry to say , was absent through illness ) , the acting Director of Ceremonies , and the Prov . Grand Organist sverc elected honorary members .

After the consecration , the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , assisted by the Prov . Grand Treasurer and Prov . Grand Secretary , installed as the first W . M . Bro . G . CONSECRATION OF THE MOUNT EDGCUMBE CHAPTER , No . 1446 .

On Tuesday , the 23 rd ult ., this new chapter was consecrated by Comp . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . S . E ., at St . Botolp h ' s Chambers , Bishopsgatestreet , E . C . A large gathering of companions assembled . Comp . Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke opened the proceedings by an effective and congratulatory speech . He was assisted in his labours by Comps . Edgar Bosvyer as H . ;

Rev . A . F . A . Woodford as J . ; and John L . Mather as D . of C . I he usual ceremony of consecration was then proceeded with , and the customary oration delivered . Interesting as the ceremony itself is , and ably as it is rendered alsvays by the G . S . E ., it appeared to us hardly ever to be more impressive , or run more smoothly , often as we have seen it exemplified . The ritual was enhanced by some musical companions , who demonstrated hosv greatly music does bring out the effect of our Masonic ceiemonial . At the

conclusion of the consecration , the new Principals , Comps . Cull , Lee , and Mash , were duly installed in their respective chairs by the Consecrating Officer . A very kind letter from the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was read amid applause . Some formal votes were taken and propositions for joining and exaltations recorded . CONSECRATION OF THE CHISWICK LODGE OF MARK MASTER MASONS , No . 357 .

The addition of another lodge to the rapidly swelling roll of Mark lodges may be looked on nosv as an ordinary event in the progress of Masonry ; but nosv and then a lodge of more than ordinary promise springs into life , the composition of svhich is of such good material , that it not onl y ensures stability on the part of the lodge itself , but forms a very important

link in the chain of Masonic Brotherhood . This may be truly said of the lodge consecrated on Saturday last . Under the able and genial rule of Bro . Alfred Meadosvs , M . D ., and an excellent staff of officers , a successful future is certain , and we congratulate all concerned on the excellent start that has been made .

The founders and a good number of visitors assembled at the Star and Garter Hotel , Kesv Bridge , on Saturday last , at three o ' clock p . m ., Bro . J . L . The loyal toasts having been duly honoured , The VVORSHIPFUL MASTER proposed that of "The Grand Master , Lord Kintore , and the rest of the Grand Ofliccrs . " Of the Grand Master it could be said that no more able or popular ruler had ever occupied that chair , and those who knew Lord Kintore best loved him best ; and he called on Bro . Shadsvell H . Clerke to respond , than whom there svas no one more worthy or icspected in all Degrees of Freemasonry .

Bro . Col . SHADWELL H . CLERKE , m responding , said he was not the senior Grand Officer present ; but he heartily thanked the VV . M . for the fraternal words he had spoken ; they had more reference hosvever to ihe Grand Officers who had served from time to time , and distinguishled themselves in the work of that important Degree , which had progressed in so remarkable a manner . He trusted he should continue to merit their esteem and goodwill .

Bro . MOON , Grand Treasurer , also responded . He had so lately become a Grand Officer that he could scarcely claim their thanks ; but he hoped so to fulfil the duties of the office to which he had been elected as to merit their approval in the future . The Mark Degree was , in his opinion , one of the most important in Masonry , and deserved to be worked in a most careful

manner . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER next proposed what he said svas the toast of the evening , that of " The Provincial Grand Master , Sir Francis Burdett , and the Provincial Grand Officers of Middlesex and Surrey . " The lodge owed its being to the Provincial Grand Master , and he , as VV . M ., was proud and p leased at the honour of serving under one so distinguished for geniality and Masonic ability as Sir Francis Burdett .

The PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER , in returning thanks , said that at first his election svas for three years , then another three ycars were added , and this renesval of iheir confidence had been going on for 15 or 16 years . This seemed to put nesv life into him , and he trusted he should continue to

exert himself for the good of the Order , as he had always endeavoured to do in the past . He had in the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Brighten , a very able and svilling helper , without svhose aid he should not have been able to carry out the duties of the province as well as he had done . The health of "The Worshipful Master , " was next proposed , and

MEADOWS , in responding , thanked the proposer for the kind expressions he had used ; but he took one exception—that lodge had not been honoured , but had conferred an honour on him in giving him the position of VV . M ., a favour he hoped lo return by endeavouring to fulfil the duties in as energetic and sincere a manner as he was capable of .
