615 ] THE STATUTS OF 1 743 . Students ought to be grateful to Bro . Speth for thus unearthing these records . It seems to me that the Statuts of 1743 clearly betray their real origin by terms and usages unknosvn to Craft Masonry . They are either , as it seems to me , the developement of a pure High Grade body , after the mania for chivalric orders had set in , or are literally
svhat they seem to me to profess to be , in accordance svith Daruty ' s theory , svhich I still believe is the true one after all , despite the high authority of Kloss and Findel , the emanation of a . lodge or Grand Lodge of St . John of Perfection , equally under the presidency of the Comte De Clermont as the Grand Lodge of France , and the precursor of that body svhich gave Stephen Morin his
commission in 17 G 1 . They appear to me to date from the last period . One curious fact connected svith these lasvs is , that they are unknosvn to French svriters except through Kloss , and are nosv for the first time published in French as preserved by Kloss . They do not exist in any knosvn French collection , and are not alluded to in any later collection of lasvs . They come from a High Grade body . There
are svords in them svhich seem to me to point to a 17 G 1 date rather than 1744 , as I said above . They seem to represents complete developement and the current usages of system different from and extern to Craft Masonry . If sealed svith the seal of Scottish Masonry , as sve shall see at the end , and as Kloss mentions , this fact svould make to my mind " assurance doubly sure , " that they represent a High Grade and not a Craft organization . 616 J MASTERS , FELLOWS , APPRENTICES . Anderson ' s svords are no doubt very careless , and it is certainly doubtful svhether he makes any essential difference betsveen Fellosv Crafts and Masters , and svhether svhen he uses " Masters" he does not mean either a Master of a lodge or an employer of labour . There seems to me a clear difference betsveen " entering an Apprentice" and " making a Mason , " but Anderson is
unfortunately not at all lucid in his use of th-2 terms ' * Fellosv Craft" and "Master . " We have , no doubt , other evidence to shosv that in 1724 there svas a difference between the " Fellosv Craft " and the " Master . " In 1730 Pennell clearly marks the difference betsveen " Master " and "Master of a lodge , " and the three Degrees of Apprentice , Fellosv Craft , and Master are there clearly defined . But is all this anything more than great carelessness of .--peech ? MASONIC STUDENT .
G 17 J BOARD OF INSTALLED MASTERS . For some time past , a considerable amount of discussion has arisen in Lancashire and adjoining provinces as to the ceremonial opening of a Board of Installed Masters , and this ceremony I find is even printed in a ritual published in London . It might be of some interest to the brethren in the provinces svhere this ceremonial opening has been
introduced to knosv that it is the old ceremony used ( I may almost say illegally ) during the last and early part of this century for the purpose of making a brother a Past Master svithout being elected to , or installed in , the chair of Worshipful Master , to enable such brother to take the Royal Arch Degree . This same ceremony has been up to very
recently , and I believe is in a fesv instances even nosv , used in remote corners of Lancashire for opening a Board of Past Masters , from ' svhich acting W . M . ' s are excluded . It seems therefore inconsistent to use it in the Installed Masters' Board , as the same formula cannot be applicable to both Boards , especially svhen it svas originally invented to evade one of them—I . e ., the Installed Masters . The most obvious origin of this svord is the Hebresv term , " Goim "— "Strangers , " or Gentiles—those svho impeded so much the rebuilding of the Temple under Ezra and Nehemiah . We have another genuine Hebresv word in " Abif , " svhich even the revised version misinterprets by translating too literally . A learned Mason among the revisers svould have set them right as regards this Hebresv term , svhich puzzles all but Masons , it seems . P . M . 1705 . 619 ] THE MEANING OF THE WORD "COWAN . "

In the evening Gi brethren dined together , under the presidency of the W . M ., a capital repast being svell served by Bro . Besford , the host . After dinner , the toast of "The Queen and the Craft " having been duly honoured , the VV ! M . gave "The Most Worshipful the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , " remarking that the interest his Royal Highness shosved in Freemasonry svas clearly evidenced by the fact
that he had recently initiated his eldest son , Prince Albert Victor , into thc Craft . "The Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Carnarvon ; the Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom ; and the Grand Ofliccrs , Present and Past , " svas the next toast ; and the W . M ., in proposing it , reminded the brethren that Lord Carnarvon svas not unknosvn in Colchester , and that Lord Lathom had on three occasions visited the province—to
consecrate the Arnold Lodge at Walton , launch the lifeboat at Clacton , and , lastly , to install V . W . Bro . Philbrick as Grand Superintendent of the Arch Masons of Essex . The Worshipful Master next gave "The Provincial Grand Master , " recalling the fact of the installation of Lord Brooke liaving taken place by the late lamented Duke of Albany at Colchester , svhen his lordship svon golden opinions , and had maintained his popularity ever
. In proposing "The V . W . D . P . G . M . and the Provincial Grand Officers , " the W . W . said he very much regretted the absence of Bro . Philbrick , svho had svritten him a most kind letter , stating that nothing but an official engagement with the Grand Secretary svould have kept him asvay . They sverc all proud of Bro . Philbrick as a Colchester man and member of the Angel Lodge .
Bros , the Rev . VV . Morgan Jones , Prov . G . Chap , j John Mann , an old P . M . of 51 and P . P . G . Sec . Essex ; and E . Hennemeyer , P . M ., P . P . G . S . W ., responded . Bro . John Mann said he had been particularly gratified at having an opportunity of once more visiting the Angel Lodge , it having been his mother lodge . He svas admitted into Alasonry at the Angel , svhere the lodge then met , in 1 S 35 , and he cherished many loving memories of the happy evenings he had spent in this lodge . His only regret svas
that he sasv so very few present svho svere members then ; in fact , he might say he svas almost the only living representative of those svho svere then members . VV . Bro . Ives proposed "The Health of the VV . M ., " svhich he said svas essentially the toast of the evening . They svere all pleased to see Bro . Grimes in the chair of the lodge , and svith the assistance of the officers , they felt confident that the W . M . svould ably carry out the duties of thc chair .
The Worshipful Master , svho received a most hearty reception , said hc felt deeply the responsibility he had undertaken , and also the high honour they had conferred upon him in electing him W . M . of the lodge . He looked upon Freemasonry as essentially a religious institution ; and if they carried out its principles in their daily walk and
conversation , they could not but influence for good those svith svhom they svere brought into contact . Masonry svas calculated to make a good , man a better man , it svas entirely consistent svith the Word of God , and he repeated , thar if they as a body adhered to the principles laid down for their guidance , they could not but do all that lay in their power for the good of their fellosv men . "

G . S . of VV ., svas re-elected representative of the lodge upon the Essex Provincial Charity Committee . Hearty votes of thanks svere passed , and ordered to be entered on the minutes , to Bro . Ives for so kindly and ably performing the ceremony of the day , and to the Mayor for allosving the use of the Tosvn Hall .
He felt his own shortcomings , but all thc time and talents he had at
