VV . ( Bro . tredenck Orme ) as VV . M ., was that brother ' s business engagements for the present year preventing his acceptance of office .

TEMPERANCE-IN-THE- EAST LODGE ( No . S 9 S ) . —The anniversary festival of the above lodge xvas held on the 31 st ult ., at the Assembly Rooms , Nexvbyplace , Poplar , by a strong array of members and visitors . Lodge having been duly opened , the minutes of the preceding meeting , also of an emergency meeting , were submitted , and receix * ed confirmation . Bro . Charles Chapman , S . W ., VV . M . elect , xvas duly presented by Bro . H .

Rogers , P . M ., for the benefit of installation ; bro . Mamuel T . Finch , P . M ., the out-going VV . M ., having undertaken the duties of installing his successor into the chair of K . S . Bro . Chapman was in due course obligated , and on the formation of the Board of Installed Masters , numbering nearly twenty , xvas duly placed in the position of Master of thelodge . He xvas next saluted in due form , according to Degree . Bro . Youn < r . P . M ., as D . C . greatly assisted the xvorking of Bro .

Finch , P . M ., in a croivded lodge-rooin . I he xvorking implements having been duly commented upon , Bro . Chapman appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . G . Graveley , S . W . ; F . VV . Pulsford , J . VV . ; J . R . Waller , P . M ., Treas . ; Dr . C . Wyatt Smith , P . M ., Sec . ( whom xve xvere pleased to see in the lodge , after his recent severe illness ); " G . Sidders , S . D . ; VV . J . E . Pulsford , J . D . ; H . RogersP . M ., D . C ; C . Scrutton , P . M ., VV . S . ; J .

, Treble , A . W . S . ; and H . Stewart , Tyler . The appointments xvere heartily received , and thereafter Bro . Finch concluded this interesting ceremony by a highly efficient enumeration of the three grand charges to the Master , Wardens , and brethren , being followed throughout xvith the greatest attention by the numerous brethren present . The balance-sheet xvas next submitted , and being

eminently satisfactory , was unanimously adopted . It is very gratifying to find the financial condition of the lodge so very prosperous , ar . d Bro . Finch deserves , and appeared to possess the utmoat appreciation of the brethren for his exertions during his year of ofiice . Starting xvith something very like a deficit , he has been enabled to hand over to his successor a balance of about £ 70 , and that , too , xvithout withholding the hand of charity , or the xvonted support

to the Charities , which has so distinguished Lodge S 9 S . The nexvly-invested VV . M . next presented Bro . Finch with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel from the lodge , xvith suitable inscription , asunder * . " Presented to Bro . Samuel T . Finch , P . M . of the Lodge of Temperance-in-the-East , No . S 9 S , as a mark of esteem and respect , May , 1 SS 2 ; " and the recipient having tendered his thanks , some other matters of lodge interest xvere fully discussed , and lodge

xvas closed after " Hearty good wishes " had been given . The brethren meeting in a private room , possessing no convenience for preparing or serving a banquet suitable for the occasion , xve congratulate the lodge upon the excellent arrangements made , xvhereby a repast at once liberal and excellently served xvas partaken of xvith every satisfaction by nearly eighty brethren . After grace the usual loyal and Craft toasts xvere given

xvith that brevity , and received xvith the heartiness , xvhich is usual in this lodge , and xvere agreeably relieved by some good singing . Bro . Finch , I . P . M ., gave "The Health of the VV . M ., xvhom he xvished a good year of office . The VV . M ., in returning thanks , expressed a hope in the same direction , although fearing that the road a VV AL had to travel might prove a stormy path . Hoxvever , as far as he could do , he xvould promise to do all in his poxver to

make it a very successful year . " The Visitors " xvere next toasted ; the Temperance-inthe-East brethren being at all time glad to xveicome visiting brethren . Bro . J . L . Anderson , 554 , responded on their behalf in appreciative terms , thanking the lodge for not only the hospitality , but also for the excellent xvorking they had been privileged to xvitness that evening . If any of the

brethren xvould like to pay thc old Yarborough Lodge a visit , he xvould ansxver for an equally hospitable reception , provided they did not all come at once . Bro . Chapman gave "The Installing Master , and the other Past Masters , " calling upon Bro . Finch , xx-ho had so kindly and efficiently installed him into thc chair , to respond . 'The brethren had seen in the past xvhat LP . M . ' s had done , and xvhat a jolly lot of felloivs

thev xvere , and no doubt xvhat they had done they xvould each of them do again . Bro . l * inch briefly returned thanks , and Bro . VV . Shayes as the Senior P . M ., also responded , being folloxved by Past Masters Rogers and Williams , all of xvhom expressed their willingness to render any assistance that the lodge might require . The VV . M . next gave " Thc Press , " to whom , he said ,

the lodge and the Craft in general xvere greatly indebted coupling the name of Bro . G . H . Stephens of this paper ! Bro . Stephens said it xvas gratifying to find from so numerous an assemblage of members of the Craft that thc good offices performed by the journal he had the honour to be connected xvith xvere appreciated . As regards the

Temperance in the East Lodge , Bro . Chapman , the neivly appointed VV . M ., and the officers xvho xvould folloxv into the chair , had but to carry out in the future xvhat had been the past history of the lodge to ensure success of thc lodge , and especially to maintain its proud position in thc foremost rank of the supporters of the three grand Masonic Institutions .

"The Officers" xvere next toasted and xvas severally responded to ; and the Tyler ' s toast having been given the brethren separated in harmony and good felloivship . It may be mentioned that there is a capital lodge of instruction xvorking under the sanction of the mother lodge , and xvhich is held at Bro . A . Brookson's , George the Fourth , Ida-street , Poplar , E ., on Wednesday evenings at 7 . 30 .

PATTISON LODGE ( No . 913 ) . —The above excellent lodge xvas opened for the lirst time in its nexv home , Brook-hill , Plumstead , on Thursday , the ist inst ., and the attendance xvas gratifying in the extreme to both the VV . M ., Bro . Robert J . Cook , and the members generally . During the past eighteen years the meetings of the lodge xvere held at the Lord Raglan , Burrage-road , but of late a feeling had arisen that it xvas not compatable xvith the best

interests of the Lodge , nor indeed with Freemasonry at all , that the room at the Raglan , associated as it xvas xvith Saturday nights' concerts and evening dances , should longer than absolutely necessary be retained for the celebration of the rites and ceremonies of the Order , at least so far as the Pattison Lodge xvas concerned , and hence the removal to its present locale . The nexv lodge room is at the High School for Boys , a fine , handsome building ,

erected at the foot of Brook Hill , and lately opened xvith much eclat by our xvorthy Bro . the present Lord Mayor . The room is about eighty feet long , by tiventy-two feet xvide , and is capable of holding a goodly assemblage . It has offices and adjoining rooms , and indeed , offers every facility for Masonic purposes , so much so , that the lodge has determined to be its oxvn caterer and Wine Steward , and provide their oxvn banquets , combining comfort xvith

economy , and thereby leaving a larger margin for the Charities than it even noxv possesses . The lodge xvas opened soon after half-past six by thc VV . M ., xvho xvas supported by the following officers and brethren , viz .: Bros . Past Masters VV . Tongue , P . P . G . J . W . Kent ; C . Coupland , Treas . and P . P . G . J . W . Kent ; E . Denton , Sec . and P . P . G . P . Kent ; C . Elles Fermor , I . McDougall , A . Penfold , VV . T . Vincent , II . J . Butter

P . G . R . Kent ; T . D . Hayes , and VV . B . Lloyd ; H . Mason , S . VV . ; E . Hughes , P . S . W . ; H . Pryce , S . D . ; G . H . Letton , acting LG . ; E . B . Hobson , VV . M . 700 ; VV . Welding , W . M . 1536 ; J . Warren , P . M . 700 ; R . Hanson , VV . M . S 29 ; R . Hodgkinson , P . M . 13 ; E . Lexvis , P . M . S 29 , and P . P . G . P . Kent ; G . Beaver , S . VV . 700 ; T . Holleyman , S . W . 1536 ; J . II . Roberts , J . VV . 700 ; S . Taylor , 1536 ; James Smyth , 1744 ; and C . Jolly (

Freemason ) , mere xvere also some sixty or seventy of thc brethren of the lodge present , and the proceedings throughont xvere most enthusiastic and encouraging . The business before the lodge consisted of the balloting for of Mr . VV . Buckley , and the result being unanimous , that gentleman xvas xvith the usual formalities initiated into Freemasonry . Bro . E . M . Taylor xvas then raised to the Degree of a Master Mason . The election of VV . M .,

Treasurer , and Tyler xvas then proceeded xvith , and Bro . Mason xvas unanimously elected VV . M . for the ensuing twelve months . Bro . Coupland xvas unanimously re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Alabbett 'T yler , lt xvas then unanimousl y resolved that a Past Master ' s jewel of the value of ten guineas should be presented to Bro . Cook , as a token of esteem in xvhich he is held by the brethren , and in recognition of the services to the lodge during the past

year , and for xvhich Bro . Cook feelingly returned thanks . There being no other buisness before the lodge it xvas closed in due form , and the brethren sat doxvn to a pretty little supper , admirably served by Bro . Moulder , P . M . S 29 . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , Bro . Hayes , P . M ., proposed in gloxving terms " The Health of the W . M . " He said they all knexv hoxv xvell Bro . Cook had xvorked , and xvhat a good Master he had been . He

hoped their excellent brother xvould be long spared to be as zealous for the xvelfarc of the lodge xvhile on the left of the chair as he had been in it . Bro . Cook , in returning thanks , said he xvas once more by their kindness permitted to return thanks as VV . M ., and most likely foe the last time . He thanked them heartily for their good xvishes , and could only say that he had tried hard to be xvorthy of the confidence placed in him , twelve

months ago xvhen he xvas , as their esteemed brother Mason had been that night , elected as Alaster of the lodge . They must not expect a long speech from him , and therefore he xvould only once again thank them for the many kindnesses they had shoivn him during his year of office . The VV . AI . then proposed the toast of "The Past AIaster . " He said the virtues and good qualities of the Past Master of the Pattison Lodge were so xvell knoxvn that

they required no additional praise from him . They xverc deeply and indelibly engraven upon the hearts of every member of it ; but , seeing that they xvere in this their nexv home , he could not let the toast pass xvithout once again , and for the first time in these rooms saying hoxv much good they had done , and xvere alxvays trying to do , for the lodge and the comfort of the brethren . He coupled the toast xvith the name of Bro . Butter , P . M ., xvho had so ably

filled the office of J . VV . during the evening . Bro . Butter , in reply , said the VV . M . had spoken of the virtues and qualifications of thc Past Masters , and especially mentioned his name xvith a certain amount of praise . Well , all he could say xvas that he xvas very proud of belonging to the Past Alasters , and being the next youngest Past Master had not anticipated the honour of having his name coupled xvith so important a toast—an honour that was

usually conferred upon Bro . Ellis , the father of thc lodge . Although that brother had another distinguished name added to the old name of Ellis , yet they liked to call him " Ellis , " even as they loved to call their esteemed Grand Alaster " Lord Holmesdale . " During the time the Past Masters xvere in oilice they tried to do their duty , and if the brethren xvere pleased it xvas the only rexvard the Past Masters looked for . Of course they had handsome jexvels to xvcar , but they xvcre only valued because in every case they

John Bertram ; the pride he felt in having been permitted to serve the lodge in the various offices , and particularly as Secretary , and expressed his grateful thanks for the kind and unexpected manner in xvhich those services had been acknoxvledgcd .

M ., Sec . ( whom xve xvere pleased to see in the lodge , after his recent severe illness ); " G . , Treble , A . W . S .
