among them . He felt that from that night thc Pattison Lodge had a great future before it . The next toast xvas that of "The Visitors , " and thc VV . AI . asked them to respond heartily to it , especially as they had so numerous and influential a body of Alasons present . In response , Bro . Welding , after thanking the VV . AI . and brethren for the handsome and cordial manner in

xvhich the toast had been given and received , congratulated thc lodge on the step they had taken , and assured the brethren from xvhat he had seen that night , he felt sure it xvould place the lodge in a foremost position among the lodges of the province . Bro . Hobson couldonly say that from the handsome and hospitable xvay in xvhich the Pattison lodge had alxvays

received its visitors , it xvould never xx-ant for them ; for they , the vistiors , not only received the right hand of felloxvship , open and generously given , hut saw that xvhich was of more and higher importance—they saxv good and excellent xvorking ; and nothing gave so much _ pleasure to him , and he might say to every member of his , the Nelson Lodge , to visit the Pattison and see good xvork done , and then pass

xvith its members a social hour . He xvas especially pleased to be present that night , because theannual election at his oxvn lodge took place atits next meeting , and it xvas a good thing to visit a lodge xvhere a special proceeding xvas talking place , if only to see and learn the best xvay of doing that xvhich xvould soon folloxv in one ' s oxvn lodge . " The Health of the VV . M . " xvas warmly proposed by the LP . AL , and this toast having been duly acknowledged by the W . AL , "The Health of the Visitors" folloxved . This pledge received full justice , and xx * as responded to in exhaustive and flattering terms by Bros . Stiles , Hunter , and Radcliffe . "The Past Alasters " came next in order , and this toast xvas replied to by Bros . Lardner , Jackson , and Walls .

"The Alasonic Charities" xvas given by permission of the W . AL , by XV . Bro . Clark , xvho made a very stirring appeal upon behalf of thc three great Institutions of the Order . This toast having been drunk xvith enthusiasm , Bro . Walls replied . " The Health of the Officers" xvas coupled xvith the name of Bro . Goodenough , S . VV ., xvho responded . The proceedings , xvhich xvere very successful , then terminated .

EASTES LODGE ( No . 1965 ) . —The first ordinary meeting of this lodge since its consecration on the 17 th ult ., xvas held on the 29 th ult ., at the Bull , Bromley , Kent . The W . M ., Bro . Sudloiv , presided , and xvas supported by Bros . Shaxv , S . VV . ; Bue , J . VV . ; Duret , Treas . ; Daxvson , Sec ; Tanqucray , S . D . ; Pocock , J . D . ; Johnston , I . G . ; and several of the brethren .

The minutes of the previous meeting xvere read and confirmed , after xvhich the ballot xvas taken for Air . G . K . Bishop , proposed by Bro . Shaxv , and seconded by Bro . VVickhom ; Air . F . R . Smith , proposed by Bro . Tanqucray , and seconded by Bro . Bud ; and Air . R . V . Seton , proposed by Bro . Johnston , and seconded by Bro . Duret . It having been unanimous , these gentlemen were duly and most

impressively initiated , one by one , into the mysteries and privileges of ancient Freemasonry . Bro . Henry Wright , of the Alliance Lodge , xvas proposed by Bro . Bud , and seconded by Bro . Shaxv , as a joining member , and being present after being elected , xvas introduced to the lodge , and thanked the VV . AI . and brethren for the honour they had done him in making him a member of the Eastes Lodge .

V . W . Bro . Eastes , Deputy Grand AIaster of the province , xvas proposed by Bro . Shaw , and seconded by Bvo . Sudlow as a joining member , and on being put to the lodge by Bro . Bue , xvas elected xvith acclamation . Notice xvas given of the election of another brotherat the next . meeting . The lodge xx'as then closed , after the brethren had expressed their thanks to the VV . AI . for thecareful xvay he hadworked

the ceremony . Ihe brethren then sat doxvn to dinner . The W . AL announced that the time being very late , he would give the toasts of "The Queen , " "The AI . VV . the Grand Master , and Earls Carnarvon and Lathom " xvithout speeches . The toast of "The P . G . AI . and D . P . G . AI . " xvas most heartily drunk , the brethren feeling highly flattered that Bro . Eastes had asked not to be elected an honorary

member but a joining- member . Die W . AL in giving the toast expressed his belief that they ix-ould frequently see the D . P . G . M . at the lodge . Bro . Duret proposed "The Health of the W . AL , " xvho , in responding , said : In founding this lodge it xvas agreed that no one should become a member unless personally knoxvn to the Master or Past Alasters . VVe do not know

if this has come about from the correspondence and articles xvhich appeared in the Freemason some months ago , on thc subject of electing members of lodges . VVe think it a xvise one ; it xvill keep the lodge select , and certainly prevent a proposing brother being hurt at seeing his candidate blackballed , as is occasionally the case . A member of Grand

Lodge remarked to us that the Eastes Lodge will be- a good lodge , both for xx-ork and for its members being somew hat select . The VV . AI . then gave " 'The Health of the Three initiates , " as the toast of the evening . The neivly-made brothers separately returned thanks in a fexv xvords .

lhc VV . M . then proposed ' The Health of the Joining Member , " and said he felt it a compliment that Bro . Wright had xvished to join them , and did not understand xvhy he should do so .

Bro . Wright , in reply , said he xvas at a loss to know why Bro . Ludloxv thought it a compliment his joining , for he felt the compliment was the other xvay , and his reason for joining xyas knowing thc W . AI . and his friend ;; , Bros . Shaxv and Bue , as such excellent working Alasons . "The Healths of the Senior and Junior Wardens" was next given . Bro . Shaxv replied in a fexv xvell chosen sentences . Bro .

Bue , J . VV ., remarked that thc VV . AI . thought himself fortunate in having such ollicers , but xvhat they are they owe all to thc VV . AI . in another place , referring to thc Langton Lodge of Instruction , of which Bvo . Sudlow is Preceptor . " The Health of the Visitor , Bro . Saunders , " was next drunk and duly responded to , Bro . Saunders remarking that xvhen he had a little more time on his hands

, he xvould like to become a member of the lodge . The Treasurer and the Secretary of the lodge xvcre also duly toasted during the evening . When the Ofiicers of the Lodge healths xvere drunk , the xvhole of the brethren on one side of the table had to stand up to reply . The brethren returned to toxvn by the last train , after spending an agreeable and profitable evening together .

AI . referred to the fact that the Bedfordshire lodges ( five ) stand alone in the kingdom as being xvithout a province , and expressed a hope

( xvhich xvas cordially endorsed by the brethren ) that the appeal about to be made through the Grand Lodge to the AI . VV . Grand Alaster to constitute the Bedfordshire lodges into a province xvould be acceded to . But xvhether the council granted them corporate dignity or lelt them in lodge isolations , he xvas sure that the brethren heartily recognised their valuable services as the chief rulers of the Order , and

xvished continued success to their important labours . The toast xvas received xvith xvarm applause . Bro . G . H . Chambers proposed "The VV . AI . " in highly complimentary terms ; and Bro . A . Atkins replied . The VV . AI . gave " The Health of the Installing AIaster ;" and Bro . E . A . Cumberland responded . Thc W . AL proposed "The I . P . M ., " mentioning that the

if this has come about from the correspondence and articles xvhich appeared in the Freemason some months ago , on thc subject of electing members of lodges . VVe think it a xvise one ; it xvill keep the lodge select , and certainly prevent a proposing brother being hurt at seeing his candidate blackballed , as is occasionally the case . A member of Grand

lhc VV . M . then proposed ' The Health of the Joining Member , " and said he felt it a compliment that Bro . Wright had xvished to join them , and did not understand xvhy he should do so .

Ludloxv thought it a compliment his joining , for he felt the compliment was the other xvay , and his reason for joining xyas knowing thc W . AI . and his friend ;; , Bros . Bue , J . VV ., remarked that thc VV . AI . thought himself fortunate in having such ollicers , but xvhat they are they owe all to thc VV . Grand Alaster to constitute the Bedfordshire lodges into a province xvould be acceded to . But xvhether the council granted them corporate dignity or lelt them in lodge isolations , he xvas sure that the brethren heartily recognised their valuable services as the chief rulers of the Order , and
