The Alhambra is to be re-opened in October . In the meanwhile Bro . G . R . Sims and Mr . Frederick Clay are engaged in a new opera to be produced on that occasion . Judging from their first production at the Royalty a great pleasure is in store for the autumn and winter months . Subscriptions amounting to about £ 2200 were announced .

We regret to hear that Bro . L . F . Littell is still unable to attend to his duties in the Town Clerk ' s department , owing to ill-health . From the same cause he has been obliged to vacate the position of Secretary of the Dalhousie Lodge , No . 1 S 60 , which he had held fora period of eight years . For the first time in iS years he was absent

from the installation of W . M . on the 12 th inst . Mr . Wynne E . Baxter , C . C ., having presented five free scholarships in connexion with the Lewes School of Art for competition among pupils at elementary schools in that town , the candidates have been examined , and five scholars of the British School declared successful .

In commemoration of the visit of the Queen to Epping Forest , the Epping Forest Musical Societyannounce two concerts in the afternoon and evening in the pavilion of the Royal Hotel , Chingford , on Saturday , May 5 th . The band of the Scots Guards and several well-known vocalists are amongst the numerous attractions .

Bro . T . Benskin , proprietor of the Castle and Falcon Hotel , has recently purchased the Raglan Hotel , which adjoins . The purchase has been made with a view to increase the sleeping accommodation of the former hotel , and the lower portion of the Raglan after the alterations are completed which are now in progress will be made into a first-class restaurant , consisting of dining room , grill room , and luncheon bar .

In our last issue we mentioned that a suite of Masonic rooms with every accommodation for lodges , chapters , & c , is in course of erection at the Gauden Hotel , Clapham . At a preliminary meeting of influential members of the Craft held on Thursday , the 19 th inst ., it was unanimously decided to petition for a new lodge in connection with this hotel , to be called the Gauden Lodge , to meet monthly from October to March , on the second

Thursday . An adj ourned meeting will take place at the hotel ( directly opposite the Clapham-road Station ) on Wednesday , the 2 nd prox ., at S o'clock , to elect officers , decide on bye-laws , and transact any further business in connection with the promotion of this object . Any brethren anxious to take part in the organisation of the lodge are cordially invited to be present at this meeting . Professor Loisette ' s " Art of Never Forgetting- "

is undoubtedly a wonderful discovery , and entitles him to the warmest thanks of all whose faculty of remembering things has grown rusty for lack of cultivation , or who , from being engaged in literary or other similar pursuits , are called upon to exercise their powers of recollection more frequently and put them to severer tests than other people . A system which enables the student to acquire knowledge with unusual rapidity and retain it certainl y cannot be otherwise than valuable . Moreover , it may be employed

in the ordinary business concerns of every-day life , while il cannot be otherwise than serviceable to Freemasons , a knowledge of whose ceremonies and ritual , whether partial or complete and accurate , can only be acquired orally . We have read with a great deal of p leasure and with no sense of astonishment the many testimonials which have been furnished by Mr . Richard A . Proctor , of astronomical fame , and other competent authorities to the value of the Loisettian system , and consequently we have no scruple whatever about commending it to the notice of our readers .

We have had our attention drawn to an admirable invention which has been recently introduced , and from the favour with which it has been received by the public we are convinced that in time it will be in very general demand , at least among those who may require to use it . We allude to the " Newton Window Blind , " which is intended as a screen for the windows of dining and other rooms whose occupants must otherwise be exposed to the

gaze of impertinent passers by . We are , of course , aware that the number of blinds which answer a similar purpose may be described as "legion , " but we know of none that possess the advantages of the " Newton . " Not only does it afford perfect seclusion to the occupants of the rooms in which it is fitted , but it is so fitted as to secure for them perfect ventilation as well . Moreover , while the occupants cannot be seen by the passers by , they are not orevented .

as in the case of stained-glass windows , from seeing what is passing in the street outside . As to the blind itself , they are to be had of every variety of pattern , many of which are most artistic and beautiful , or they can be made from the purchasers' own design . The fittings are simple and easily worked , so that the blind can be taken out when the window is cleaned , or it can be sloped inward and the window opened for ventilation , or when there is an exceedingly strong light in the room without lesseninir the

absolute privacy of those inside . In short , the "Newton Window Blind "—which , by the way , is to be had of the patentees , Messrs . A . and J . Wetherilt , builders , decorators , & c , of 10 , West Chapel-street , Mayfair , W . —possesses greater durability , is more effective , and has better fastenings than ordinary blinds for a similar purpose . It allows of no draught when the window is opened , and what is by no means its least recommendation , it affords greater scope for tasteful decoration .

The Alhambra is to be re-opened in October . In the meanwhile Bro . G . R . Sims and Mr . Frederick Clay are engaged in a new opera to be produced on that occasion . from the installation of W . M . on the 12 th inst . Mr . Wynne E . Baxter , C . C ., having presented five free scholarships in connexion with the Lewes School of Art for competition among pupils at elementary schools in that town , the candidates have been examined , and five scholars of the British School declared successful .

The band of the Scots Guards and several well-known vocalists are amongst the numerous attractions .

Bro . T . Benskin , proprietor of the Castle and Falcon Hotel , has recently purchased the Raglan Hotel , which adjoins .
