the 14 th inst . by Bro . Officer . In his letter he expresses a "doubt as to when the Grand Lodge of Scotland first created provincial grand lodges . " He then refers to historical statements on this subject by Laivrie and Lyon , remarking " that one would like to know which of the statements referred to were correct . "
In apologising for troubling you with this I have only the excuse that , knowing you are willing to receive new and historic matter connected with Masonry in your columns , having interested myself in the pages of the minute books and other old documents of Lodge St . David ( 36 ) , I come upon reliable facts in reference to what is alluded to in these
letters . I find that in 17 S 6-7 the "Right Worshipfull" of the lodge was William Campbell , Esq ., of Fairfield , Ayreshirea friend and patron of Burns—who long after the term of his office had expired continued so active and interested a member that the brethren of St . David on the 27 th of
December , 1799 , again offered him the ancient mallet of the ; lodge ; "he declined the honour , deeming it rather incompatible with the character of a Provincial Grand Master to officiate in the above capacity . " In a minute of the 17 th of March he is there named as " Provincial Grand Master of the South and West Districts , "
and also in minute of the nth May , 1802 , at which meeting his second son was initiated , he is there designated as " Provincial Grand Master of Ayreshire , " the Kilwinning District . I also find in another " old book of Masonic records" a list of the officers appointed as provincial grand masters by
the grand lodge " 2 nd February , 175 6 , to visit the several lodges in Scotland and to report . " 1 . The names of their present masters , officers , and members . The place and time of their meetings and Day of their Annual Election . 2 . An extract of their By-Laws , inspect the Regularity of their Books and report the state
of their Funds . A List of such of their Members as are not inrolled in the Books of the Grand Lodge , with the Dues of Inrollment and Power given to compound for Bygones if they see cause , and to bring Proxies to represent such Lodges in the Grand Lodge . And the following Brethren were named to several Districts , and Commissions
ordered to be made out to them for the above purposes with proper Instructions , viz . To—Sir Wm . Dunbar , Kirkwall Dyke G . M . D ., Barronct Thurso Forres Inverness , Old I .. Kilmolymoak Do . St . Andrews in Elgan Do . Cumberland Banff .

The above is an exact copy from the manuscript , and is in beautiful penmanship and by the hand of the " Right Worshipfull" Walter Fergusson , Master of St . David , in 17 S 4 , and given as copied from the books of Grand Lodge of that date . The omission of the Ayreshire District seems to infer
that at the above period—1756— must have been under the cognizance of Lodge Mother Kilwinning , indeed none of the Kilwinning lodges appear in the above list and there seems to be matter in it for some surmising as to the exact power of Grand Lodge over the Ayreshire District . —I am sir and brother , yours fraternally , DAVID TAYLOR , R .
