work on Thursday week with great skill and ability . The Selwyn Lodge meets at the East Dulwich Hotel , East Dulwich-green , formerly known as Goose-green , near Champion-hill Station , hut the meeting now under notice was held in the new Masonic Hall , which the spirited proprietor , Bro . The installation meeting of the Selwyn Lodge may be said to have inaugurated the opening of the hall , as prior to that occasion it had only been used by the lodge of instruction . The whole ceremony was admirably performed and gained for Bro . Nicod , the most hearty commendation . The officers for the current year are Bros . A . I . Bellis , W . M . ; L . C . N . Nicod , I . P . M . ; W . E .

Burnett , S . W . ; A . E . W . Powles , J . W . ; E . Eagle , Treasurer ; W . W . Hook , P . M ., Secretary ; VV . B . Marcus , S . D . ; VV . J . Bullimore , J . D . ; R . E . Anderson , I . G . ; R . P . Forge , P . M ., D . C ; W . jBosher , W . S . ; L . E . Eagle , Asst . W . S . ; A . F . Grainger , Org , ; and Bowler , Tyler . There was a large amount of work on the agenda paper besides the installation , and the new Master was no sooner installed than he had to exemplify his fitness for the office .

Bro . Bellis was quite equal to the occasion . He is a member also of the West Kent Lodge , 1297 , and a most fluent and impressive worker . The ballot was taken for two joining members , Bros . G . F . Barton , and W . E . Constable , and for two candidates , viz ., Mr . J . Scary and Mr . Isaac Dadd , and being favourable in each case , Messrs . Seary and Dadd were initiated by Bro . Bellis into the mysteries of the First Degree . Three members of the lodge were

appointed as a Committee of the Benevolent Fund , and the Secretary and Treasurer of the lodge were appointed Secretary and Treasurer of the tund . The report of the Audit Committee was read and showed the funds of the lodge to be in a prosperous condition . The lodge was then closed in due form after " Hearty good wishes" had been tendered from the lodges represented by the numerous visitors present .

After the banquet which followed the closing of the lodge the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed from the chair and were heartily received and honoured by the brethren present . After the toast of " The Oueen and the Craft " and the M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales " had been drunk , The Chairman in proposing" The M . W . Pro Grand

Master , the Earl of Carnarvon ; the Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past" said that they had hoped that some of the Grand Officers would be present to reply to the toast themselves . In particular they had hoped for the presence of Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , the Grand Secretary , but from a pressure of business he had found himself unable to be present . They had however Bro . E . C . Malet de

Carteret , Prov . G . M . of J ersey , present , Bro . C . Naylor , P . P . D . C . of the same province , Bro . Clifton , P . D . G . Org . Bombay , and Bro . Tickle , P . P . G . Reg . Middx . Bro . Malet de Carteret was an experienced Mason , having been in Masonry when be ( Bro . Bellis ) was a little boy , and he should ask Bro . de Carteret to reply for the Grand Officers . Bro . de Carteret in responding said that if he had had any idea that be would be called upon he would have

prepared something to say on this occasion ; but he had been taken by surprise , and he could only say that he thanked the W . M . and the brethren very heartily on behalf of the Grand Officers for the compliment they had paid them , and lie thought be might add on behalf ot the Grand Officers that they did the very best they could for the good of Freemasonry , and as long as they did their best so long he believed would Freemasonry flourish in the kingdom .

Bro . Nicod , I . P . M ., said it was with a feeling of very great pleasure that he rose to propose the toast of the evening , "The Health of the W . M ., " on account of the eminent services he had already rendered to the lodge , and the unanimity of the vote by which Bro . Bellis had been placed in the chair was a proof of the high estimation in which he was held by ail the members of the lodge . He was sure that the brethren would agree with

him that they could not have a more worthy brother , or one who reflected greater credit on their lodge . Although Bro . Bellis was a young Mason he knew a great deal of masonry , and he had given them a taste of his talents that evening in the way in which he had performed the work that fell to his hands . Under Bro . Bellis ' s direction he was sure that the lodge would prosper , and he had also the greatest confidence that at the end of

his year of office the brethren would acknowledge that he had done his duty with credit to himself and advantage to his lodge . In returning thanks for the very kind terms in which it had been proposed and for the kind manner of the I . P . M . in proposing it , Bro . Bellis said that he thought those terms were not deserved . He had yet to perform the duties that would devo ' . ve on him as Master , and the end of his year

of office would be the time for them to say whether he had acquitted himself worthily . He had now obtained the opportunity , and he hoped in the position he had obtained that he should be able to do his duty with credit to himself and satisfaction to the brethren of the lodge . The next toast he had to propose was " The Health of the I . P . M ., " with which he coupled the Past Masters . This being the commencement of only the third year of the

Selwyn Lodge , the only Past Masters were Bro . Nicod , and their esteemed Secretary , Bro . Hook , P . M ., whose health would be proposed later in another capacity . Bro . Nicod had taken very great interest in the lodge and had done all that he could to promote its welfare . The master said he was sure that Bro . Nicod was going out of the chair having impressed all the brethren with the feeling that he had very worthily done his dutv . The feeling had prompted them to

mark their approbation in a more substantial manner , and had voted him the jewel which it gave the speaker great pleasure to pin upon his breast . He hoped Bro . Nicod would have health to wear it among them for many years to come . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . G . Kenning . Bro . Nicod said he thanked the brethren very heartily

for the kind and flattering terms in which his health had been proposed and for the cordial manner in which it had been received . His year of office had been for himself a source of great pleasure and enjoyment ; he had been present at every meeting and had endeavoured to discharge the duties of his office to the best of his ability . He looked upon the beautiful jewel which the W . M . had presented to

him as a mark of the approval of the brethren . It had filled him with pleasure and pride because he looked upon it as a testimony of their satisfaction at the manner in which he had carried on the lodge while he had the honour to preside over it . The Worshipful Master said the next toast he had to propose was that of " The Initiates . " This was one of the

most important a lodge could have put before it , because no lodge without initiates could go on growing in strength and numbers , and when they had initiates they always had plenty of visitors who came to see them initiated . They had two initiates that evening , Bros . Seary and Dodd , but as the two previous initiates were initiated at an emergency meeting and the brethren had not had an opportunity of

drinking their healths he should couple them with the two brethren who had been initiated on the present occasion . The initiates having returned thanks the Worshipful Master next proposed " The Health of the Visitors , " coupling with it the names of Bros . Col . Malet de Carteret , J . Tickle and C . Naylor , who returned thanks on behalf of themselves and the numerous other visitors present , and

expressed the great pleasure that all the visitors had experienced in seeing the admirable manner in which the work was done and the affairs of the lodge carried on . The other toasts proposed from the chair included "The Treasurer and Secretary" and "The Officers of the Lodge , " which were duly honoured and responded to ; after which Bro . Hook , the Secretary , asked permission to propose

" The Health of Bro . Gurney . " Bro . Gurney was their host as well as a member of their lodge , which had so expanded that it now numbered some 40 or 50 members ; but it was owing to the enterprise of Bro . Gurney that they were able to meet with such comfort and pleasure as they had enjoyed that evening . Seeing that the lodge was growing fast hehad of his own accord erected the beautiful room

in which they had met , and he thought they could do no less than drink his health for having so gone out of his way to make them comfortable , and for the admirable banquet that had been so admirably served . Bro . Gurney returned thanks ; and the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . Not the least enjoyable part of the proceedings was the

music with which the intervals between the speeches were enlivened . The music was under the direction of Bro . A . F . Grainger , the Organist , who was assisted by Bros . C . A . White , VVallis , L . E . Eagle ( clarionette ) , and Hook . The following were among the visitors present : Bros . E . C . Malet de Carteret , P . G . M . Jersey ; C . Naylor , P . P . D . of C . Jersey ; C . Clifton , S . W . 944 , P- Dist . G . Org . Bombay ; J . Tickle , P . P . G . Res . Middlesex ; R . E . H .
